A traffic light fell down Wednesday morning, 10 Jan 2018

(CNS): The traffic lights that stretch across the junction of Smith Road and Huldah Avenue-Bobby Thompson Way crashed into the road on Wednesday morning, causing traffic congestion in the area. It was described by officials at the scene as a mechanical failure but it’s not clear what brought down the entire system just before lunch. Police arrived to direct traffic soon after, as CUC and NRA crews worked to re-erect and fix the lights.

I hope that the Government see how dangerous this kind of work is .
Just imagine if a car was traveling at say 40mph and that arm came down and landed in the windshield of the car and 4 people were in the car . I have my doubts that there would have been any survivors .

I think that the NRA should really know the reasons why that traffic light came down, and re -inspect all lights for any defective work before it’s too late .

The basic concept of regular maintenance seems alien to some of our govt. entities and statutory bodies. And the concept of preventative maintenance exists in a completely different dimension . Keep running things to failure and this is what you get.

Infrastructure fees are now badly need it is time Cayman someone pay it before Cayman becomes another fail state and falls into disrepair like the rest of the Caribbean. Work permit fees permanent residency and status fees and vehicle & driver licences for all those who wish to drive on our roads and dump garbage in our dump. This so called UNITY government needs to step up to Save Cayman.

There would be plenty of money for “free medical”, parkland and infrastructure, if there wasn’t as much theft and negligence.

Just who are the thieves? I thought they we all in prison. and no one on this island is ever convicted of negligence. The money you seek must be going to a different class of people.

What do you expect, purchase it install it and wait till it fall apart or break down. Just like all of the other department(s) equipment/assets. Then start the purchasing process again. Not there money $$$ so who cares. Scheduled maintenance please and hold everyone responsible accountable. Was that not the key word (accountable) in Government a couple of years ago. Aaaaa well who cares?? wasn me, not my job, ha ha.

A simple northwester did that , I can’t imagine what a hurricane would have done . I suppose that the installation cost was about 50 thousand dollars too .

I’ve often worried that those long arms holding the lights would fall down as they’re only supported at one end. Thank god nobody was under it when it fell. Maybe it’s time for all traffic lights to be checked out.

    • West bay Premier says:

That’s only when the work is done half a$$ that you should worry about those long arms . In the US those Traffic light arms don’t come down in ordinary weather conditions .

From what I have been reading about this Traffic light coming down , it sounds like the NRA has and is doing a lot of temporary work and calling it done .
