Accident on Shamrock Road, 10 January 2018

(CNS): One person remains in hospital following a three-car smash on Shamrock Road on Tuesday evening, in which four people were injured. Police said the crash happened close to Selkirk Drive at around 7:00pm and involved a Honda Inspire, a Dodge Caliber and a SsangYong Tivoli SUV. The officers at the scene found that the Dodge had overturned, while the Honda Inspire, which had been travelling east, came to a stop in the oncoming westbound lane. The smash interrupted the flow of traffic for over on hour in both directions as emergency responders attended the scene.

Police said the driver of the Honda was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the SsangYong and the passenger of the Dodge were also taken to hospital but have both since been released, while the driver of the Dodge was treated at the scene.

One thing is certain, the roads of Cayman are becoming more and more unsafe. The police rightly cite drunk driving and recklessness, but although poor driving is constantly on display, the new narrow roadways do not help the situation. They give the appearance of super highways which many interpret as a reason to speed.

I note that there was an accident in Prospect at an intersection. Sadly it is more and more frequent to see persons ignoring the stop signs and causing near accidents. Where are the traffic police?

It is not enough to say that the rain is responsible for some accidents and appeal to the public for information if nothing is being done to curb this lawlessness. Many are inconvenienced and have to bear the cost of time lost, persons injured and vehicles in need of repair.

The Government needs to look into these problems and proactively study why traffic problems are a hazard to the country’s well-being.

Shouldnt be hard to figure out what happened to cause this collision as we have a CCTV camera right there… just hope it was working (fingers crossed)

I have no doubt speeding was a factor in this collision.

Not only speeding I imagine, but also a total disregard on how to properly drive on a 2 lane road. Now that’s on a par with roundabout use!
