Car crash, 22 Jan 2018

(CNS): The driver of a Honda Integra is in critical condition at the Cayman Islands Hospital with life-threatening injuries following a two-car crash on Hirst Road, Newlands, last night. Police officers came upon the scene just before 9:30 yesterday evening, Monday 22 January, and the RCIPS is appealing for witnesses. Police said a Chevrolet Tahoe and the Honda had collided, causing the Honda to leave the roadway and crash into a utility pole before coming to a stop against a fence nearby.

Emergency personnel attended the scene and both drivers were taken to hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet was treated and released but the man behind the wheel of the Honda is still being treated for very serious injuries and remains in a critical condition.

Police, who are appealing for witnesses to the crash said this was one of 34 road smashes over the holiday weekend.

Anyone who may have seen anything related to this collision that they feel could assist with the investigation is urged to call PC Athelton Watts at the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit at 649-6254.  Should PC Watts be unavailable, any other officers present can also assist. Calls after hours should be routed to the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.

It’s sad to see the majority of these bad accidents nowadays are younger Caymanians, now being labeled as criminals and outlaws.

I pray almost every time I go for a drive, whether down the road or to east from west, to be safe and protected by the wings of God’s Angels. I’ve had a couple of these kind of cars, and especially when you are under the influence, it is tempting to speed.

If you find it hard be responsible, you shouldn’t be riding bikes or driving fast cars, because the pavement isn’t soft, trust me. Life is not a video game, you get 1 life and no ‘re-spawns’. If you plan on living your life to the extreme, just keep the very serious consequences in mind.

For the record I have NEVER been in a motor vehicle accident, and I am 22. I have had Honda Integra Type R’s, Accord Euro R’s, all the ‘fast cars’ you can think of, dirt bikes, the whole mix. I know the consequences, and I do not plan on being 6ft under, or 30 years deep on a drunken murder sentence.

As I sit here reading the trail of comments left under this news story, I can’t help but think how sad it is that there are such negative people out there who are almost happy at the thought that the, I quote, “menace” was injured in this unfortunate accident. It seems to me, based on the comments, no one really knows the circumstances that led to this unforunate accident taking place, but all are quick to assume that the driver of the honda integra was at fault….are you all seeing the same photo I’m seeing that is attached to this story? The back end of this car is severely damaged which could indicate this vehicle was actually hit from behind. However, I’m only speculating, just like the rest of you….

The bottom line is, there’s a nasty habit and mentality of too many here that would rather take the, “I told you so” approach, rather than offering smart, effective, well-thought out solutions.

Thinking about it, accidents have increased within the last few years….do you know what else has increased? The amount of cars on this island and our roads have increased. Consider how much road infrastructure and development which has had to take place in just the last 2 years to accommodate such rapid growth in the number of cars and traffic.

My opinion and thoughts on a solution are that:
    1) Obtaining a CI driver’s license should be a little more challenging than what it is currently
    2) Perhaps a tarriff or yearly road/ car tax should be implemented so as to deter people from owning so many personal vehicles
    3) The public transport system needs a complete overhaul and should be developed to run similar to the UK

For the record, I don’t know either driver, I am not a family friend or family relative, but a young Caymanian that feels sorry for the human being that is now in serious condition after such an accident.

    Just my 2 cents…

I agree…innocent until proven guilty. However I am sure you will understand that everyone, probably including you, when you see an older Honda on the road, you always take a little more care, because the chances of them doing something stupid are far greater than any other makes. I am afraid that is just down to experience, however people should not automatically assume that is the case.

Every time i read a story like this, i feel the roads are a bit saver.
Accidents are always caused by humans overestimating themselves.

Can’t wait to hear the next story.

This is something for us to think about . 50 years ago there was a Company in George Town that rented Honda 50’s and S 90’s motor bikes, and they were stolen right and left . Today it’s Honda cars that are stolen and wrecked right and left . Who drive and own the majority of honda cars in Cayman , and which country had Honda vehicles as the common vehicles 50 years ago . That could answer this 50 year Honda thief trend . If you can’t afford to buy a new car , it makes sense to buy one that you can get the parts for at a very cheap price .

Those who make excuses for him are the ones who will be responsible when he kills someone on the road, I hope they jump to his Defence when that happens

To posters 1:08am and 7:45am you both sound like you’re the reason that this kid is nothing more than a menace, let me guess parents, family or friends?

I have asked before that police increase their presence along Hirst Road as there are too many cars speeding, too many cars without a license plate. Along the main road in Savannah (just in front of the gas station etc) nobody appears to go the speed limit and cars, taxi buses and dump trucks) just speed through like maniacs.

I also would like to know where the political representatives of these districts are so that the residents can raise some issues and concerns in regards to what is going on in their neighborhood.

This idiot was speeding up and down Hirst Road all day Monday, had the police showed up, he may be in a better position than he’s in now. He was a menace when he was riding a bike, and police had to knock him off his bike in order to get him to stop, now he’s graduated to a car same menace.

Shame on you considering you don’t know either of the stories. Judging by the evidence he was fish tailed off of his bike, in case your base level IQ of 30 can’t comprehend what that means: He was the victim of attempted murder.

Shows how much you know. People like you just like to get your 2 cents into everything without actually knowing facts, as pointed out by the previous reply. The cynicism of those who tend to comment on these posts is appalling, and goes on to show alot about the type of scum we have living here. As far as I’m concerned, you’re the damn menace. Go back to where you came from.

Granted it was a case of mistaken identity where the police responding to a robbery thought that it was this menace, instead of stopping for the police he continued to speed away, causing the police to take the actions that they did. Now the menace (note :that he will always be regarded as a menace) has a car, and he is doing basically the same thing. And to poster 1:08 am, you say what the police did to get him to stop was attempted murder, what do you think this menace was doing when he decided to race up and down Hirst Road, and ultimately colliding with another car? And oh I come from west bay and still here Bobo.

The reason Cayman Community is the way it is, is not because of what we say or do wrong.
It’s because we either think too much on what’s bad rather than good- Or we don’t think at all!

I can’t understand which out of the two this comment is coming from, but believe me when I say you need a reality check. Put some love in your heart and stop the hate.

It will spread and it will impact.

Get real you don’t know him, and you certainly have your facts wrong. Your mama not reach you to not say nothing if you don’t got nothing good to say?!?

Your day is coming tho, what goes around comes back around.

You’re wrong, night time is way better. Roads aren’t clogged up and you can actually enjoy the drive. I find both day and night driving equally perilous on this island albeit for different reasons.
