McCleary Frederick

(CNS): The director of Hazard Management Cayman Islands, McCleary Frederick, has retired from the civil service after more than 36 years working in government, having started as a trainee draughtsman in the Public Works Department (PWD) in 1981. After working his way up in the department, he moved to planning, before joining the Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs, helping to establish a permanent and full-time disaster management agency. He then became the deputy director of mitigation at the agency before becoming its director more than ten years ago.

In May 2017, Frederick made history as the first international recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Florida Governors Hurricane Conference.

At his retirement event last week, Deputy Governor Franz Manderson said Frederick’s “out-of-the-box thinking and quick wit was always refreshing and engaging. He displayed the confidence of a good leader and always showed an affection and love for the people of the Cayman Islands.”

Home Affairs Minister Tara Rivers, his current chief officer, Wesley Howell, and former CO, Dax Basdeo, all lauded his work

Frederick, who will be on the job until 29 December, said that to be successful in life you have to recognise that such success will often depend on a lot of people. “I have worked with some incredible individuals over the years and have learned a bit from each of them,” he said.

Let us see now Manderson said that Frederick’s “out-of-the-box thinking and quick wit was always refreshing and engaging. He displayed the confidence of a good leader and always showed an affection and love for the people of the Cayman Islands.”

Is that all that can be said, where is the substance or is there none that can be said by either? Would it not be more appropriate to state what exactly are the tangible results he has achieved in over ten years at the helm? The good book Luke 6:39 states “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit?

The Civil Service pit is growing with such politicians.

Someone should do an FOI request on the numerous conferences attended by staff of this department at various lovely locations around the world over the past 10 years, all at the taxpayers expense. Ju Ju would approve for sure.

My Dear McCleary- You were awesome in every way to work with! We enjoyed your many sweets, and deep, sincere words of advice. Your charming wit, and the way you would fire back a cunning remark was amazing. Your knowledge and wisdom is very much underrated. They will never be able to fill your boots. Best of luck to you Sir. Happy retirement! You deserve it!

If you understood how mass texting works you would not have made that comment. Further to that all those waiting on a Tsunami Warning text can log on to the PTWC subcribe and they will get all the text they desire…Please people make some comments with sense!!!

You need to get over it. Everybody else got theirs. Some people will complain about this department until we need it and then those not choked up on pride will thank them for their work. Congrats Mr. Frederick. God’s best as you embark on the next leg of your journey.

This platform gives people the ability to vomit their hateful views; not based on facts but just hatred. Love and need our money, but can’t stand us…what a cheap feeling it must be!

They are not doing any job. Each government department is mandated to have a recovery plan and they will all tell you that Hazard Management is a redundant entity that just gets in their way and could very easily be closed down.

Much if the civil service is really a social security regime to shift government revenue into the hands of voting families. There does not need to be a job to be done for a department to fulfill its traditional function.
