Car crash cuts power from Red Bay to Newlands

(CNS): Hundreds of CUC customers were without power Wednesday morning and a major section of the Shamrock Road was blocked after a car crashed into a light pole. The smash happened around 3am and although the police have not yet released many details, it is understood that the driver, who was alone in the car, was not seriously injured. The collision knocked out the pole and brought down the lines, which caused a major outage for customers in Newlands and all the way into Red Bay.

The car hit the pole near the junction of Hirst Road close to Dominoes Pizza, blocking the road in both directions and forcing traffic to divert behind the gas station for hours during the morning commute. The road is not expected to reopen until around noon today. While many customers have had power returned CNS understands that many people in Newlands are still without electricity.

I know the guy who caused this crash. He was out celebrating his last day on island as a chef, got mindlessly drunk and crashed into the light pole, he was scheduled to sell his car the day after to me however its now a pile of old metal at GT Dumpsite.#truestory

In most countries power poles are roughly 30cm/12ins diameter, spaced around 60M/200ft apart.
For some reason in Cayman the poles are 60M/200ft diameter, spaced 30cm/12ins apart.
That is why every car running off the road must hit a pole.

I’ve always wondered if these poles have some hidden magnetic properties, as no single vehicle seems able to avoid striking them! These mindless and/or drunk denizens need to be charged with the economic costs of their forays into the road margins. It had businesses and consumers “out of business” for the duration of the works to restore the power they so inconsiderately interrupted.

I would love to have CUC publish the number of light poles damaged over the last 10 years, it must run into the thousands. This small island must hold the world record for this achievement, not something to be proud of.

I wonder how to get my head around that they want to extend the drinking hours on NYE? If people are not able to drink responsible now – how can businesses and politicians wish to consider extending the drinking hours?

And….. Savannah is a race track. I see no police only crazy speeding drivers, yet police harass others because we are easy targets. Start catching these speeders, unlicensed cars uninsured drivers, unlicensed drivers. Catch these and Government will have lots of dollars.

Not sure if the timing is right there. I lost power in Prospect around 3:30am for an hour.

Quite impressive to take out a power pole and not get seriously injured.

Just curious, who pays for that? If the driver ran into my fence, I’d expect them to pay for fixing it.

I live in Newlands and we lost power around 3:15AM and not 5:00. The power in North Sound Estates came back on at 6:00 AM.

5am on Wednesday morning and probably not a soul in sight. Do they get billed for the pole?

    • Anonymous says:

What does CUC charge for the work required to replace the pole and get power back up? How many times have these bills gone upaid, and who pays them then?

    • Anonymous says:

The person should be billed for inconveniencing hundreds of people, some of them for several hours!
