DVL holding hundreds of uncollected plates

(CNS): The RCIPS and the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing are urging drivers in cars that are still displaying temporary plates to go to the DVDL to get their new and secure replacement plates.  Although the government unit is behind on the goal to replace all plates with the new secure registration plate system, it says it now has two rooms filled with new plates that need to be collected. Police said no one should be driving with the paper plates in the interim, as all temporary plates now have replacement plates available at the DVDL.

Replacement licence plates at the DVDL

“We actually have two rooms full of the uncollected plates,” said DVDL Director David Dixon. “To pick up the new plates, customers must bring their temporary registration plates, windshield coupon (if not expired), and log book to our Crewe Road office to receive their permanent plates.”

Over the course of last week, the RCIPS Traffic Management Unit conducted traffic operations across the island. Between Monday 23 October and Friday 27 October, police set up over ten roadblocks and speed traps and issued 78 tickets. Over half (40) were given for speeding, 17 were for tints and 15 tickets were given to drivers in vehicles that needed to be registered.

“These traffic operations are designed to increase the safety of the public by ensuring that the rules of the road are being followed,” said Inspector Ian Yearwood, Head of the TMU. “We all know that speeding is dangerous and puts other road users at risk, but illegal tint also creates unsafe conditions on the road for a number of reasons, and we are therefore stepping up our enforcement in this aspect as well.”

Drivers in illegally-tinted vehicles could receive a $150 ticket or be cited for a traffic offence that requires an appearance in court and the possibility of a $150-$2,500 fine. Police added that traffic operations are ongoing.

Goodness gracious me, “lazy backsides” 2.11am? Please exercise some respect for your Caymanian hosts. I grew up in the U.K., and a more reluctant bunch of lazy buggers in regard to standing up to any form of crappy service one would be hard pressed to find. They take anything lying down – and mumble “thanks” for it! Get real, man.

Of all the needs for CIG to spend money on…why this new plate system anyway?

I know, it’s wacko. My advice, based on 38 years of living here : if you want to retain your sanity, just don’t take it at all seriously, They agree with their sky being taken away and driving through a tunnel … just don’t think about it!

Why was this done so half-assed to begin with? Why was there a period where these terribly laminated pieces of paper were issued at all? I’ve seen WAY too many cars on the road with not even the temp plates displayed. Again, government and their “efficiency”… If this was the plan all along, the old yellow plates should have been issued in the interim. I went to license my car the other day and they would not license it unless I brought them my old plates… EASY. If everyone was issued real plates (and not easily duplicated pieces of printer paper), when the inevitable time comes around that the car has to be licensed, THEN the plates are switched out. It’s a slower roll-out process, but it would definitely alleviate the annoyance of sitting at the DVDL more than necessary.

i was also told I would be called when my plates arrived. That was in July – no call from DVDL as yet! How then can they blame the public for failing to collect plates?

Same here!!, I was also told that I would be called to collect my plates too back in April.

I too have yet to receive a call from DVDL!

Same with me. I licensed my car in mid October and I was told they would call me. That hasn’t been that long ago but the cops are going to stop me now and tell me (and probably fine me) that I can’t drive with my old plates?

First of all. I was told I would be called when my plate is ready to be collected.

would be a great task for the police. i mean they probably have “their” hands tied. but! they could just stop cars with temp plates, issue a ticket for not having them changed by now. they only seem to be concerned about tint. while at these roadblocks, deal with the temp plate issue as well. You are the POLICE. so do POLICE work. Excuses me, since you do not have the proper plate put on your car by now, i have to issue you a $100/$150 ticket. its stupid to see cars still running around with no plates. it just leaves room for more crimes to be committed… SOLVE IT … its that simple.

Maybe a little too simple. I’m not sure the police have the authority in the law to do what you suggest. Have the temporary plates somehow become invalid because the permanent ones are available? I don’t reckon so. What’s needed from the licensing department is a route to doing the swop that doesn’t involve spending 2 hours plus looking at two clerks instead of a full compliment of staff. The ball really is in their court in this issue.

Yeah its a bit confusing because you cant just show up and change the plates. They have to call you first to let you know when they are available. That’s How I did mine.

Get off your lazy backsides and stop expecting RCIPS to do your work for you!! You ALL moaned enough about vehicle plates and they are in place now and you are moaning now because you have to pick them up?? Dear God! You’d never survive in the U.K. No one owes you a living people. Yes, it’s a pain in the backside to have to queue for anything and I can understand, I hate it too, but this is how it is all over the world. If you can’t attend this office any day between the times stipulated there’s something radically wrong with you. You haven’t got a door to door postal service like other countries. Maybe you should put that service request to your Premier.
I’ve waited 2wks for a replacement registration log book for my car. They told me it would be 3 days! So there you go, delays are worldwide. Lack of staff is a common problem just like you see with one person attending to you all when there are several windows available………..a recruitment drive needed maybe?
RCIPS and other Government bodies can only employ according to the funding received from Government. If the money isn’t available, no new staff can be put in place. Hence the constant queueing.

It’s this niggling thing called work! I can’t take a few hours off for lunch. I have at most 30 minutes by the time I get to the DVDL before I have to leave to get back on time.

If we “wouldn’t survive in the U.K.” how come you’re living over here, sportsfan? Maybe you got sick of queuing ………… but I love your stoicism and acceptance of things. An inspiration to us all.

People with your attitude of accepting poor service are the same people that prevent improvement. In this modern electronic age queuing for poor service can be eliminated. Perhaps it is acceptable to you, but unless we voice our opinion on poor service, it wont change.

      • anonymous says:

Indeed. What’s laughable about 2.11am’s appeal to reason (of a sort) is that folks in the U.K. are renown for reluctance to complain about poor service. I’ve interviewed several on this same issue, and nine times out of ten I’m missing a seat cushion afterwards.

I’m sorry, I do not understand why this is a choice. All plates are being changed out. It there are plates for people to change to, then do it. If they do not chose to do so then impound there cars. Easy as that.
Locals….. do not want to pick up thier plates…….. because they are criminal non law abiding toads that should lose their license, car, and freedom.
Follow the law or be prosecuted. To that hard to do.
And then there will be less cars on the road. Thank you.

Maybe we haven’t picked up our plates because we were told they would call when ready and not to show up before we received the non-existent phone calls. If someone at DVDL would answer the phone occasionally it might also help.

So, to sum up: a four day campaign total of 78 tickets spread over 10 roadblocks (a little less than two tickets per day per location) and 10 speed traps (averaging 1 ticket per day). Do the RCIPS figure that’s a reasonable conversion rate given the volume of offenders out there? How many of our 300+ officers were involved in this effort? Cost vs. Revenue?

    • Anonymous says:

It took me three lunch hours using up the whole time without success. I then took a day off work and it took 1:50 minutes to re-license my vehicle. I got excited when the on line system was introduced, but it no longer works for me and after a year the department simply said they don’t know why it doesn’t work. It has become the biggest joke department of the whole of government.
