Drivers warned of anti-skid work at Prospect Roundabout

| 26/10/2017 | 26 Comments

(CNS): The NRA is planning to apply an anti-skid coating on the east portion of the Dr Tomlinson Roundabout in Prospect tonight, Thursday 26 October, between 9pm and 6am if the weather remains dry. The east side of the roundabout will be closed, so drivers can expect multiple traffic diversions. Road users are asked to take their time and pay close attention to all traffic signs and personnel that may be directing vehicles.

The NRA said that the anti-skid coating is an internationally proven method of reducing road collisions.  It is especially effective where loss of friction results when rain, oil and other lubricants are deposited on the roadways.

“While the NRA continues to review solutions to improve road safety, it encourages all road users to remain alert to their surroundings and road conditions, follow posted speed limits and obey the rules of the road, “officials stated as they tanked the public for its patience.

The RCIPS has provided the following traffic patterns:

Going EAST Traffic has the option to go:

  • Option 1: Left off Hurley Merren Blvd. Right onto Mahogany Way, Left onto Poindexter Road straight out to the East-West Arterial.
  • Option 2: Right off Hurley Merren Blvd. against the natural flow of Roundabout, right onto Shamrock Road.

The Roundabout will be closed to traffic heading East along shamrock Road in the vicinity of Marina Drive.

Rex Crighton Blvd will be closed to traffic from Dr Tomlinson Roundabout east and from the roundabout at Poindexter Road West to Dr Tomlinson Roundabout.

Traffic headed West to Marina Drive via Shamrock Road will not be able to access via Dr Tomlinson Roundabout. Access will be gained from the Red Bay Roundabout (Auto Spa) via Hurley Merren Blvd.

Man this is gonna be sweet, now I can go faster round them things. But my Honda and I are still learning how to take those curves at 90mph so gimme a break when I drift into your lane and cut you off. Oh forgot to mention my new ride has these things called indicators but haven’t learned how to use them yet either. Anyone know what they are for?

Coming from a country where we have snow covered roads 4 months out of the year I find this quick comical

I get skid marks everytime I go around any roundabout here…

I think this would be a great idea. Unfortunately, since about 40% of idiots don’t know how to use this engineering marvel it is pointless.

For the love of god, put up signs that tell people heading east on Shamrock Road to STOP TURNING RIGHT IN THE LEFT LANE. It is every flavour of idiot too, locals, tourists, dump trucks, cops. Imbeciles.

Well said, It’s the stupid road code that allows the use of the left lane going 2 stops around roundabouts. Even the people that designed them don’t seem to know how they are supposed to work.

You “spin the mag” using these roundabouts, it just like Russian Roulette but the cars are the bullets.

  6. Road Runner says:

Dearest 5:13pm because those incharge of the construction of that roundabout at the time put it the wrong way around and it should infact tilt in not out. but you see this ignorant person is part of their little clique and belongs to their little social club and continually hogs up the NRA board. His retirement and subsequent payout was just a big as the mess he left behind. The improvements you now see are merely correcting this idiot’s mistakes!

So Road Runner , if the roundabout was done wrong , wouldn’t it make more better sense to do it over NOW the right way , than putting the nonskid on the bad roundabout.

What is going to happen is that many innocent people are going to lose their lives in the roundabout , then the NRA would decide to do it over the right way .

I think that the time has come that concerned Caymanians wake-up and tell these LODGE BROTHERS and LEADERS we are awake now .

Roundabouts can, and are built with two options, negative or positive camber, a negative camber slows traffic and sheds oil and water, a positive camber (leaning towards the centre) speeds traffic and accumulates oil and water, hence the need for a third lane which is unused. The water needs to pool somewhere whilst draining. Its not that the NRA put the wrong sort of roundabout in, its just drivers are unaware of the differences and haven’t seen or experienced enough variation in roads to cope, There may have been a fault in using the wrong tarmac to start with, but the design isn’t ‘wrong’. In an environment like ours with heavy rain its better to shed water, rather than pool it. They should have used a rougher textured tarmac and I don’t know how durable a coating is, but they aren’t totally stupid. It might have helped if they had explained it a bit better…and used the right tarmac.

No. The properly cambered design is just plain safer and better. The main advantage of the current design is just that it is cheaper to build since drainage is much simpler to engineer.

Another NRA project starting up? What about South Sound Road, Crewe Road, Linford Pearson, Easterly Tibbets? Wouldn’t it be more sensible to complete some of those projects before starting another one?

No one would skid if they didn’t drive like it was a race track and NRA are USELESS!

With the mad drivers I see daily I doubt anything will keep thier cars on the road especially roundabouts.

  10. West bay Premier says:

Why are the NRA putting the nonskid in the roundabout , so that stupid drivers can go faster in the roundabout . That nonskid don’t prevent automobile rollovers .
They better be careful with wasting that Taxpayers money , rainy days are ahead .

Anti-skid big joke… round abouts are death traps. Anti skid not going to help. Wasting more money.

Roundabouts are NOT death traps. It is the morons who cannot negotiate them properly who cause the accidents on roundabouts. 11.14am, you hit the nail right on the head.

    • Diogenes says:

“Death traps” please go into fine detail, where is the trail of bodies? I don’t recall seeing many signs and flowers commemorating the lives lost on roundabouts probably because I literally cannot think of one death on a roundabout, even when accidents occur they are caused the majority of the time by human error not inherent danger

People wouldn’t skid around this roundabout if they went SLOW and used the correct lane rather than race to undertake. No amount of anti-skid coating can fix stupid..

  13. Veritas says:

They should be applying this coating on all the roads within a mile of the Vehicle Licencing Centre.

  14. Anonymous says:

Well, NRA can’t really screw-up applying a coating can they? Like they did with the grooves which go with the “flow” instead of perpendicular to the flow!

NRA is always playing catch-up instead of doing the right thing the first time!! Where’s the accountability? I’m going to stop paying fees to Government until there’s accountability for wasting my taxes!

NRA are a joke…. why wasn’t this done originally?
can anyone explain why they added another lane to the big roundabout in spotts/prospect?

    • Road Runner says:

Because they have the money to waste. More lanes and more roads yet I still stuck in traffic both in the morning and evening. Why are they doing these roads when the public is not benefiting? All I see is the quarry people, truckers and island paving reaping the benifits.

      13
      6
    • West bay Premier says:

Because NRA didn’t know how much traffic was on that road before they made it , but the week after they finished the road they learned that they needed one more lane .
