NRA urges people to stay off the roads

(CNS): With as much as eight inches of rain expected to fall on the Cayman through Saturday night the National Roads Authority is urging people to stay off the roads unless necessary. Anyone that has to drive is asked to exercise caution and watch for potholes as the rain from Tropical Storm Phillipe pounds the islands. With rough seas a marine warning remains in effect as residents and marine interests are advised to stay in safe harbor. At 5pm the center of the storm, which was packing 40mph winds, was about 20 miles south-west of Havana, Cuba moving toward the north quite quickly at some 29 mph.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) mainly to the east and southeast of the center.

On the forecast track, the center of Philippe will move off of the northern coast of Cuba and into the Straits of Florida this evening, and move across the Florida Keys or the southern tip of the Florida peninsula overnight, and across the northwestern Bahamas Sunday morning. Forecasters said additional strengthening is forecast during the next
48 hours.

Why would anyone think that NRA can build good roads when the DUMP TRUCKS are heaver than NRA roller that are pressing the foundation of the roads, after two to three weeks driving on any roads that they build its like on the rough seas.

If NRA built the roads correctly in the first place, there would be no potholes. I live in Snug Harbour, one of the main roads was rebuilt last year. Potholes starting to show up. Why? Maybe having drains at the highest points in the neighbourhood might be a clue? Water flows downhill last time I checked. Cayman seems to have the usual opposite logic to the rest of the world, but everything flows uphill to the right pockets here. Yay, love the “first” world attitude/ acceptance of minimum performance.

What kind of roads that NRA make , can’t withstand one heavy down pour of rain that they have to be cautioning people about potholes in the roads.

I have to say I totally agree. All these high powered, high-salaried people. This is not the first time Haz Mngmt has dropped the ball. No releases put out, no updates.

Thank God for the Met Service.

Unfortunately, their info has to be relayed to the public through agencies like Hazard Mngmt.

The weather service was going a great job the whole time. I happen to receive their notices and I was very grateful. But, as I said, their info is relayed through relevant govt agencies and media.

And, by the way, neither was GIS active.

    Seriously folks. Do your job!

Hazard Management posted on the website until it became clear there was no T. Storm threat for the Cayman Islands – advising the public that they should exercise caution driving on flooded roads and that a Marine Warning was in effect for the weekend. Residents were further updated over the weekend through social media.

Most people do not use social media to track the weather. (Especially not Twitter.) Social Media is not a substitute for a proper hazard management media push.

What we need is better communication of what is, or isn’t, likely to occur. So this ‘storm’ brought some rain. So what? Anyone able to drive should realize that if your’e driving in rain exercise caution and if the road is flooded exercise extra caution (look out for pot holes). At some point we need to accept that Hazzard warnings shouldn’t actually be needed and maybe last weekend was one of those times.

Can no one in Govt update anything? What a waste of time and money. On the Govt website there is no tropical storm. Lazy, just fire them all, we will use the National Hurricane Center website, and save us all some money. Do not even get me started on the useless port authority website. Embarrassing and complete crap.

It’s the weekend, so nothing happens (that effects the entire island) outside weekdays and even then, I have to spend my day doing “important” things like chatting to my friends, burning rubber to go for lunch/home, Yada yada. I am so exhausted, thank you CIG for direct deposit of my pay, I simply do not have time in my busy schedule to go to the the bank to deposit my pay cheque. Third world problems!
