Dump closed after heavy rains damage road

| 05/10/2017 | 25 Comments

(CNS): The George Town landfill was closed to the public on Thursday amid safety concerns as the main access road has been badly damaged by the deluge of rain in Cayman over the last week or so. The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) said it had to close the facility in order to carry out repair work on the road, which has sustained extensive damage. The work will continue over the next 48 hours, officials said, adding that they expect the landfill will then reopen to the public.

The 24-hour public drop-off site located at the entrance of the landfill will remains open to facilitate the disposal of small amounts of waste. The DEH said it asked for the public’s understanding and apologised for the inconvenience caused by the closure.

For more information, please contact DEH’s solid waste section on 949-8793.

I believe that the DUMP is going to be the reasons why alot of these Politicians should lose their next election . Then they should be like Hillary Clinton still can’t believe today that she lost her Election . .

She didn’t lose it. The Russian stirred up a bunch of hillbilles with Trump’s favorite: fake news. Idiots.

You too still don’t believe that she lost the election .

That is what the fake news told their idiotic audience. But Hillary did it all to herself and Bill helped when he meet the Linch on the runway.

So this wasn’t expected? The nearsightedness of people managing this country is mind blowing.
How can one responsible for the smooth operation of the Dump did not foresee that? They now have functioning equipment (knock, knock on wood) and hopefully replacement parts are on island, not somewhere in Germany, but overlooked what heavy rains can do to the roads leading to and from The Dump?

Why would you foresee a road washing out, that never has before, from a small storm 300 miles away?

  5. West bay Premier says:

I wonder what the Government is thinking about when they are not fixing the dump except using it for a political football ?
But I think that the time has come that the people use these politicians as political football and tell them that the dump must be fixed or you career politicians can look for another job .

What are the government thinking about doing with all that garbage ? I don’t know of any uses for it , except being a eye sore , an a hazard to the people health, and a political football .
Then wait until we get the next Hurricane Ivan and we would have a bigger mess to clean up . Then I wonder if these Politicians would get their hands dirty cleaning up . Or then they make sure that Caymanians get a job then .

They already have a plan. If DART offered them $60 Million and they declined, they definitely have a plan, they just don’t want you to know what it is and who will be personally benefiting from it. Ya feel???

That’s only half a plan, and its Dart’s plan just to be rid and raise the value of his proximal real estate. Why would he not see the opportunity in building a zero emissions combined solid waste and wastewater treatment facility adjacent to his property? Make this a PPP project with DEH and ensure there are strict criteria for operation and emissions. And don’t call me a nimby as Dart started the campaign to move the dump so who’s calling who a nimby?

The plan will be the same as in Ivan. Flee the country while the people they represent are left behind to tally and clean the destruction. Disgusting display of their ethics.

The Caymanian voters haven’t admitted or realized that the current crop of politicians are not up to the task of fixing the dump. Next we will find these politicians hiring more foreign consultants to make another plan to spend more money and waste more time with the problem only getting bigger.
Everyone knows a new dump site is required but the politicians do not have the strength or courage to educate and lead the people toward this reality. The current George Town site needs to be remediated and a new professionally operated site needs to be constructed.
Weekly recycling pickup just like garbage pickup needs to be instituted of paper, glass, plastic and aluminum.
Of course these politicians will not do this.

The Dump must cease to exist in its current state, not tomorrow, TODAY. All talks must stop. Hire specialists with a proven track of success in remediation of open air landfills using the latest technology. Forget about everything else! This is urgent, this is an emergency. The entire island’s future depends on it. Just imagine what a month of heavy rains would do to the Dump, let alone another hurricane. It might turn into a mudslide.

All of these elected officials and not a clear answer to this problem, and the day a storm hits they’ll be the first to flee the island and leave all your dumb asses here to clean up just like they did in Ivan. Stop voting for useless candidates and come together to prevent future tragedy!

I’ve been using the 24-hour public drop-off site for many years with no problem. But beginning from about a year or so ago I’d arrive on repeated occasions to discover the facility closed. All containers were full, or some full and the others absent. The explanation from the attendant was that “they were having a problem with the equipment”.
The result of this was a bone-shaking/ vehicle dirtying drive up to the summit of the landfill. Upon arrival I was directed to back my vehicle up to the edge of the most recent line of deposited material. I was surrounded by heavy equipment, either from commercial operators or (most dangerously) the DEH’s huge purpose-built machines, which literally towered over my puny vehicle.
This was a most dangerous environment by any measure, and the air-quality was such that I subsequently carried a mask and goggles in case the “24/7/365” public drop off was closed. Today I am unsure if the public drop off will be open upon my arrival. It has gone from a certainty to a “maybe/maybe not” scenario. Perhaps I am not alone in my experience of late?

Just WOW, only in Cayman! Words SAFETY and REGULATIONS don’t exist in the DEH vocablulary. And here I thought that equipment works.

  9. And wait until we get hit by a Hurricane Harvey or Irma type hurricane. It will happen eventually, and we will all suffer on Grand Cayman. Such stupidity and shortsighted vision by the political leadership here.

The dunp is a testament to Caymanian politicians ignorance. As Garfield Watson said, wait until a hurricane makes landfall here again. Water levels all around the world are rising, the storms are getting larger and the storm surge is becoming more lethal.

This spells doom for our little island , and especially since we have ticking time bomb of a health hazard called mount trashmore.

Why do you people continue to vote in cadidates who are unable to solve this probelm? Do you not care about your health? Do you not care about your family and friends health? Because the politicians you elect in sure don’t.
