(CNS): Police said they are investigating a report of rape after a woman was attacked by a man in the car park outside a George Town bar in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The suspect is described as dark-skinned, about 5’8” tall, of medium build and was wearing a green shirt and blue pants when he grabbed the woman outside Bananas on Eastern Avenue. According to a police report, the woman had been inside the bar but after she walked outside with a friend she was approached by the man, who pulled her away, pulled at her clothing and then assaulted her before fleeing the scene.

The attack was reported to police around 3:45am today. When officers arrived at the location they carried out checks in the area and throughout the wider George Town area during the early morning hours, but found no one fitting the description provided.

Anyone with information is asked to call George Town Police Station at 949-4222.  Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

Much sympathy to the survivor and not taking away from their suffering or courage to report the matter. I will never be able to fully comprehend what goes through the mind of people who experience this but I can imagine.

However, do we as a society know how HUGE the sexual assault epidemic is in Cayman? How under-reported the offenses are? Worse, how many cases get ignored by the police? Here’s the popular catch phrase the police use when they do not intend to do **** about a report: “We take every report seriously”.

Whenever you hear that from a RCIPS officer, best believe, no action will be taken.

Notice how the RCIPS is promoting themselves through PR and actions abroad? They are trying to hard, but I mean so very hard, to sweep their BS under the rug. No offense to new leadership as I always intend to give people the benefit of the doubt but Dear God, the state of affairs in the RCIPS is a complete disaster. Top to bottom. Inside-out. That “organisation” needs a complete overhaul and culture change.

I pray the press continues to follow cases of police misconduct, even though it appears NO ENTITY seems interested in prosecuting the RCIPS for their “failings”. They rather call it by a different name and hope nobody notices.

Case in point: How is it appropriate/unpunishable for a police INSPECTOR to lie in Court under oath (and I am certain he didn’t swear to God but instead gave his “affirmation” preluding his intent to deceive) and have video evidence completely contradict his testimony not get punished/held accountable under some sort of legal doctrine (perjury, breach of trust, abuse of power, etc).

Folks, we have a big problem on our hands with the RCIPS.

All that being said, I apologize for painting the entire canvas with the same brush but as the adage goes “one spoiled apple ruins the bunch”.

It is time that we start to hold or political leadership and our police service responsible for not allowing the citizens of this country the right to properly protect themselves against the ever increasing levels of violent crime within the country.

Due to the increase in serious crimes over the past months, I am concerned that we are still sending a contingency of sixteen RCIP officers to the BVI. This, in addition to the reckless driving and increased accidents on our roads.
I understand the difficulties faced by our Caribbean neighbours but surely the Governor and the Premier should ensure that we are not courting disaster in our own territory.

  5. Until our LA sits down and change many of the antiquated laws that we have for prison time this will not stop.I spoke to a learned judge sometime back and asked him why the same people keep coming back to court for Marine Park Offences and why the sentence is so light and he said that the LA has to change those laws to fit the crime as he has set prison or fine amounts that he has to abide by..Its a JOKE what some people are getting away with here and that’s why many just flaunt the law and remain repeat offenders.Rape in many countries is a life sentence and in some castration .

Question is: where was the friend at that time? Didn’t the friend find it weird that a man pulled her away? It just leave you to wonder, is it a norm for a guy to pull someone away at 3:45am!?
