Imam knocked back on interfaith efforts

Aizaz Khan

(CNS): A Toronto-based imam from the Ahmadiyya Community, a sect of Islam dedicated to peace and interfaith cooperation, offered to explain Islam over a coffee to anyone in Cayman interested in understanding why the vast majority of the world’s Muslims are not terrorists. But Aizaz Khan received a less than warm welcome by local Christians during his short visit. Khan arrived on vacation a few weeks ago and offered to answer any questions anyone had about Islam. Hoping to meet with local Christian leaders to begin building bridges, he instead was met with insults and derision.

Khan arrived at a time when some people are ratcheting up anti-Islamic rhetoric because Cayman’s new governor, Anwar Bokth Choudhury, who will take over from Helen Kilpatrick next March, is Muslim. A campaign has been started by local activist Kerry Tibbetts to have the new governor replaced. She has said the FCO is being insensitive appointing a non-Christian to the job. CNS also understands that another group of local people has also written to the FCO expressing their dissatisfaction about Choudhury’s appointment.

With opposition to people of other faiths taking on the top job, Khan’s visit came at an interesting time. But he said that his offer to discuss the issue of religion, and Islam in particular, was largely rejected by the local Christian community. He found younger people and some less conservative Christians, as well as those from the Filipino Christian community, were in some cases happy to engage. Khan said he was really grateful to those people who were willing to embrace his offer and ask lots of questions over coffee.

But being called “scum” by some Christians surprised him, he said, as he was just offering to talk and nothing more.

CNS contacted a number of local Christian leaders but none of them would speak on the record about the idea of interfaith communication, with some being hostile about the notion and others dismissing it as something that Cayman did not need.

Cayman has a very small Islamic community and most practising Muslims remain very much under the radar. There is no mosque or any other non-Christian place of worship, other than the Jewish temple on Cayman Brac, and most people practising faiths outside of Christianity meet for worship in private homes or sometime hire function rooms. Although the preamble to the Cayman Islands Constitution 2009 describes the country as Christian, the Bill of Rights protects all religions.

Islam is a Political System/Ideology, not a religion so I am not sure that it would be protected under the Bill of Rights as a Religion.

Funny, I could have sworn you were talking about Christianity, or should I say the bastardization of it here. That is if you had not called out Islam. Being a non Christian I would rather take my chances being a minority in Islamic majority rather than a Christian one of the kind we have here any day. Why is it that some Cayman so called Christians have no respect at all for anything or anyone non Christian? I have never met such vile, hypocritical, condescending and ignorant Christians as some that live in Cayman, it’s as if this island is the last bastion of the Inquisition.

P.S. A Caymanian who used to live here.

It’s easy to believe in God. All you need to have is no evidence. All religions which claim supernatural understanding and knowledge of the physical world all share this trait in common and is total bollocks.

People – religion is not a preference. It is either true or false. You cannot pick a religion just because it suites you better. Just because you were born in a Christian home does not make you a Christian or being born in a Muslim home makes you a Muslim.

All religions cannot be correct. All the religions can be all false, but all religions cannot be all right.

Buddhist, Hindu, Christianity, Islam, Catholicism are not the same.

Christianity is different from all because we depend upon Grace alone and Jesus Christ alone.

Hindu, Islam, Buddhist and Catholicism believe in works.

We cannot earn God’s favor by bribing him with works.

    Please, people it does matter!!!

Umm excuse me. Don’t lump Catholics in the same bucket as Hindu and Buddhist. Catholics are the oldest and only true religion. The rest is all new age occult c$&p to confuse you. Jesus as your Saviour is the only true belief. The only way to true grace is confession, the Eucharist and receiving communion and have a personal relationship with you Saviour Jesus and none of this has anything to do with anyone else. So don’t force your crazy, warped bad religion on those who know and live the truth. That is the devil with distraction. Your relationship with God is between you and God only.

All of these religions claim extraordinary truths, but rely on lies as foundation. Christianity is no different. It’s easy to believe in a god, you just need to have no evidence.

I feel sorry for you. Do you need evidence to love someone too? Faith is exactly that, without proof. The only way you would have faith is to pray and form that relationship and make the effort towards God and then you will see the results. God gave us free will. We need to go to Him. He is not going to twist your hand or convince you. He has provided us with all the tools necessary. The Bible, Saints, miracles. What about those modern day Saints who after dying and were dug up had incorruptible bodies. What about the miracle of the sun in Fatima witnessed by all. What about Lourdes, France and miraculous healings from Lourdes water and where the Virgin Mary appeared. If you didn’t shut God out so abruptly without giving Him a chance then what hope do you have of developing faith. I personally have was healed from cancer from Lourdes water.

Reading these comments and now perplexed by the irony of brutal, inhumane, and sustained acts of terror committed by White, European Christians – (in the name of Christianity!) – having made the Americas, the Caribbean, and of course, the beloved Cayman Islands the alleged “Christian safe-haven” it is today.

You (and your friend below) have missed the entire gist of my post – and it shows in your replies.

Granted, we are not forced to do anything TODAY as we are hundreds of years beyond the forced “settling” and “founding” of the Americas as “Christian lands”.

Clearly you fail to grasp history and the fact that terrorism, genocide, slavery, and brutality were the tools used to instil “Christianity” in our region.

(Unless of course you believe those hundreds of millions of modern, non-White, Latin Americans – many of Native and or mixed ancestry – were always Catholics and Christians.

Unless you also believe the tens of millions of Black and Mixed Americans, Caribbean, and Hispanics – majority being the descendants of slaves – were originally Christian?

Those are rhetorical questions – as clearly you are actually that ignorant.)

Fast-forward another 300 years and, if successful, the forthcoming Muslim Caliphate, similar to modern western Christianity, will be an established and acceptable faith with its legacy of forcible conversion being long forgotten … as clearly demonstrated by you (and your friend).

            I trust this helps.

99.9% of the Western World are “proud” that they haven’t the slightest hint of interest in knowing the difference between a Shia and Sunni. Few know or care what a Amadiyya is all about (fewer will click on the link). Zero effort has been expended in the last 16 years of war to learn about the tribal and sectarian divisions within Islam. When reading about genocidal attacks on Yazidis and Shias, most would think to themselves, “tough luck for them”. 4 star Generals, Senate and national leaders will proudly declare they don’t know what a Twelver is – maybe something to do with the 12 days of Christmas song? Meanwhile the G7 continues to sell Billions in advanced weapons to MENA nations that build the “schools of hate” that incubate the suicidal jihadist Salafist and Wahabbist Sunnis we have been fighting. Some of these schools maintain education compounds within the borders of these G7 countries. That’s the sad state of affairs, unfortunately.

We have been so overrun by other cultures that now we find ourselves apologizing for what we are? Why is that we are now being told that we must accept and change or common beliefs and culture by people who come here from countries where we would not be allowed to reciprocate in the same manner.?

It makes me laugh that people say all Muslims are terrorists but they forget all the wars and deaths Christianity as caused since the religion was made. Yes I said made by man.

From the Greeks and Romans Christians have killed and destroyed anything in their path that wouldn’t convert to Christianity, Slavery happened on the back of Christian beliefs. Priests and other Christian leaders have been committing blood rituals and sexually abusing children for years. Personally some of the most judgmental. evil, backstabbing people I have ever met have been Christians, I considered my self a Christian for many years but after witnessing so many terrible actions by my own people I decided that I will praise god in my own time my own way spiritually. Lets not forget God is not religious, religion is man made, God is a spiritual being, if you want to get closer to God connect with him on a spiritual level, don’t live like a dog Monday to Saturday and then act like your a clean hearted person on a Sunday. Lets not forget that we are all human. Yes Muslims are going through a mad cycle at the moment, but lets also not forget that Christians are to blame just as much especially the so called Land of the Free USA, THE BIGGEST TERRORISTS IN THE WORLD.

Look in the mirror before judging others, whether your a Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist etc. etc. we all sin on a daily basis, you can either be honest to yourself and to God by or you can lie to yourself and pretend your a good person. Guess what which do you think it’s the worst one.

I agree, the OLD Testament has plenty of reference to violence but then Jesus’ mission (and the New Testament which followed) was intended to counter all of that – He preached love for your enemies not Chopping Heads and hands off or stoning Adulterers and throwing Gays off High places and levying of Taxes …against anyone who does not believe.
The Quran teachings declare that their book is the ‘final’ word – so it cannot be changed (unlike the Bible which was written by Jesus’ followers during his time on Earth from their day to day interaction with him) – the Quran was written hundreds of years after the death of Muhammad, who was illiterate so could not have written anything himself), so the Hate passages remain unchanged – although I agree that like many purported Christians with the Bible’s OLD testament, not all Muslims follow the word of the Quran to the letter – Still the basic tenet remains as their rooted belief system. Even the fact that Muhammad as their so-called Prophet was a Pedophile and Murderer would give me pause to think perhaps this is not a Godly path to follow, even if I claim to be a Peaceful Muslim, as does the sect of Islam which this gentleman follows.

“Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life, No man cometh onto the Father but by Him.”

Muslims and other people say the Bible is corrupted by man.

Let’s critique the Quran the way Muslims and non Christians critique the Bible.

Quran was altered because it was first written in Arabic. Now it is written in English.
    Man written!!!!!

The Quran was compiled after the death of Mohammed. So how do we know if the man that was in charge after Muhammads death was true about putting it together the right way?
So the Muslims trust is not in Mohammed but a different man or men I should say.

Also after it was compiled they burned all the manuscripts saying, this is the true Quran. So how now can we prove that everything was written correctly? No proof, no sources to look back at. Take this book or leave it or die!!!!!

Also many of the people who memorized the Quran died in battle. They found one particular verse with one man that no man had. How do we know if he was right?
(I attended to the work, compiling the Qur’an from palm‑branches, pieces of cloth, and from the memory of the people, till I found the last part of Surah al‑Tawbah with Abu Khuzaimah Al Ansari, which no one else had.)

    Hmmmm!!!

Getting a bit fishy to me.

Muslims say Jesus was not crucified nor he died and rose.
History, scholars, atheists and the Bible says otherwise.
Jesus was crucified, died and He is Risen!!!!! Amen!!!!

Who got Jesus right? The Bible or The Quran?

Sounds like Islam was jealous over the Torah and the Bible. Old Testament and the New Testament.

Jesus did say many false teachers will come after me. Jesus is right about this. Well, Islam and Muhammad did come after Jesus. Beware of false teachers. :////

It is true that to put your entire faith into words from a book is unwise, especially when it requires you to blindly accept that the “facts” and opinions contained come direct from the deity. Even more so, when they are deemed to come through the mouthpiece on earth, who in fact was many years dead when the book was written.
So, if you can apply that rationale to the Quran, think hard about the Bible.
The truth is that it is nonsensical to blindly have faith in ancient writings, instead, take what you can from writings of all faiths and form your lifestyle on what you find to be moral and reasonable. And while you are at it, don’t forget that the Quran and the Bible are not the only writings, there is truth and nonsense in both those, but in many others too.

      • Rick says:

You have no idea what you are saying. The bible was compiled from many works, some of which predated Jesus the Christ. Jesus spoke many times, that ‘…it is written…’ The bible is also not about Christianity only; Jesus is of the New Testament. The Old Testament is context for Christianity.

The main difference between Christianity and Muhammadanism is that one teaches love and forgive your enemies and the other teaches reject and kill anyone who is not of your religion. One teaches co-existence whilst the other preaches no tolerance. One teaches that it is a sin to lie or abuse your neighbor in anyway and commands you to love thy neighbor as thyself, whilst the other teaches that it is OK to lie or kill your neighbor if they are not of your own religion.

People keep saying Islam is a religion of peace, but there is no way to leave Islam peacefully or to live in a country ruled by Islamic laws which countenances other laws or religions. Islam is only peaceful and tolerant in countries that are ruled by other religions or non-religious regimes. The most tolerant interpretations of Islam is so hated by the rest of Islam that they are the first victims of Islamic fundamentalist terrorist. And why is this so? Because they dare to tolerate the rest of us who are not of their extremist views.

But Christianity is a religion of peace. The entire story of the Christ and his followers is about peace and love. And those who practice in His name and fail to love their neighbors as themselves are expressly condemned in the Bible by the word of the Christ and all His disciples.

        Amen.

Point me to the bit that was incorrect.
What I was saying is that both texts are anachronistic, both contain parts written on a non contemporary basis, both contain reasonable teachings and both contain nonsense.
In this day and age it is absurd to presume that the texts, either of them, are absolute and to be followed without question.
My suggestion is that as educated modern people, we should take from those texts the parts that make us better people, but never to let ourselves be blindly driven by a dogmatic belief that these ancient writings are accurate in all things!

The problem is Islam is NOT a religion of peace.

There is something you have to understand (I am a muslim). The Quran is the word of God. It cannot be changed altered or revised. Unlike many of the different christian religions. Where christian religion has changed over the years in the revisions of their bible. To make it more tolerant. The Quran has never been edited, or revised. And will never be. To edit the Quran is the most sinful of sins. As it is considered the word of God and cannot be questioned. So google violent passages in the Quran. You will find some shocking examples. That are still done today.

Islam will never accept gays, adultery, equality or many of the other things that the tolerant left enjoy today.

The Quran contains at least 109 verses that speak of war with nonbelievers, usually on the basis of their status as non-Muslims.

It is okay to lie to non believers to gain their trust. The entire faith is to convert everyone to Islam.

Fight against those who do not obey Allah and do not believe in Allah or the Last Day and do not forbid what has been forbidden by Allah and His messenger even if they are of the People of the Book until they pay the Jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued

When you meet the unbelievers, smite their necks

Kill them wherever you find them and drive them out from where they drove you out. Persecution is worse than slaughter

When your Lord revealed to the angels, ‘Truly I am with you. So, keep firm those who have believed. I will strike terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved. So, strike them at the necks and cut off their fingers

Equality with men and women. Think again.

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has made one superior to the other and because they spend to support them from their means. Therefore, righteous women are obedient and they guard in the husband’s absence what Allah orders them to guard. And, as to those women from whom you fear disobedience, give them a warning, send them to separate beds, and beat them

Oh you who believe, fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you and let them find harshness in you

    There are many many more

Unfortunately, until the Quran is acceptably edited. The violence will never stop. It’s a hard truth. But one you have to understand to be like the verses in the Quran. It cannot be questioned.

Both Islam and Christianity are not a religion of peace. There are violent verses in the Bible just as there is in the Quran.

People will claim it’s old testament yet it very much remains part of the Bible.

Both religions promote ignorance as if knowledge we’re evil and orchestrated by the devil.

      This is a big problem.

Thank you – to an Honest Muslim…. whilst I have a problem with the basic tenets of Muhammad and his life style … I concede that Christianity has many flaws as regards the Old Testament but in the years since Jesus, the Christian theology tried and preached to change that (which is something which Islam text never did and continues not to do because ‘the Quran cannot be altered’)…..Yes, Christianity (and their followers) has not been perfect throughout the ages… many atrocities in the name of Christianity {witch burning, Slavery, Colonization etc} – but the underlying message which Jesus tried to portray was one of peace (”love your enemies” … even if not all Christianity’s followers did not or do not abide by it to the letter – in the same way as ‘a few’ Muslims do with the Quran 1400 years later – taking it word for word)…. and with the abolition of these Christian wicked practices over the years, hopefully we Kaffirs have become enlightened and managed to change our ways….some, maybe not – but these days we do not bomb/shoot people because of our difference of opinion or the publication of a cartoon or mowing people down in cars shouting ‘Jesus Akbar’ whilst we’re doing it !
The Difference is … Yes, terrorism is conducted by Non-muslims all over the world but the majority of the recent atrocities have been committed by people following the tenets of Islam (note I am not saying Muslims as I have Muslim friends who are nothing but good people living exemplary lives (one of my family members has a Muslim relationship) !! (Not Sikhs, Buddists etc) who assimilate and try to live in peace with ‘their fellow man’ – not dominate them.

He has an agenda, if only to build a Muslim community. We do not need another religion springing up here. However I am glad that he was not welcomed with open arms. I would have conversed with him if I had happened to run into him because I do know something about their beliefs and what they teach as well as the ways they try to come accross. We really do not need him coming to enlightened us about his faith, most of us do not really care about his faith. Perhaps he should have gone to visit some of his oppressed brothers and sisters in the Middle East who are terrorizing so many parts of the world with their hatred and warped religion. Why does he think we need to know about his religion. Canada is a huge country, perhaps he should continue doing his missionary works there and leave us alone. Be aware of wolves in sheep clothing. Concerning the next governor, we will be hospitable to him but he must understand real early that he cannot meddle in our religion and we won’t meddle in his.

His intentions may be good but it comes across as arrogant as essentially he can only speak about how he views Islam and not how the entire Muslim population views Islam and identifies themselves with it.

What turns me off Islam is that in my experiences Muslim expect respect and acceptance from individuals affiliated with other religions, yet they are not prepared to extend that same respect and acceptance the other way.

Simple example – it is to be accepted that a Muslim living in a Western European country is wearing a Niqab, Burqa, Abaya etc, but it is not accepted when a tourist visiting a Muslim predominant country wears shorts! It is a totally hypocritical view and the playing fields are not leveled. There are too many of such examples.

12:47 I’ve lived and worked in the Middle East and you are absolutely correct to say. ‘they are not prepared to extend that same respect and acceptance the other way.’ The problem is you’re regarded as a non-believer of Kafir and although the Quoran (60:8) tells believers to show kindness and be just to non-believers in reality you’re more likely to be treated like scum.

It’s a marked contrast to the attitude of the Israelis who frankly couldn’t give a damn what your beliefs are as long as you keep them to yourself. I was staying in a Tel Aviv hotel in 1991 just as Ramadan started and the Jewish hotel staff were getting up in the middle of the night to prepare Suhoor for the Muslim guests who couldn’t eat at the normal breakfast times – that’s tolerance.

I think the peaceful Muslims are losing the battle against radical Muslims.

    Religion of peace? Or pieces?
    Muslims follow Mohammed, right?
Mohammed said a lot of peaceful things at the beginning but then he turn into a killing machine.
Does Mohammed and Islam suffer from spit personality?
Mohammed beheaded 800 Jews in one city alone, raped and solved the women into slavery. He lied a lot to get his way (making false peace treaties). He married a child and got her pregnant. He even married his son-in-laws wife.

    Should Muslims follow his life?
If so then ISIS doing exactly what Mohammed preached.

Just like the Bible say to Christians “examine yourself to see if we are walking in faith”.

    Muslims please understand the Quran.

Some interesting comments on here. Just want to point a few things out for readers. Disclaimer – I’m not muslim.

Point 1 – This article opened with “A Toronto-based man”. Given the Canadien tourist market is your 3rd highest, with the European market dwindling fast, actions like these carry with them significant ripple effects. This is a jurisdiction with very liberal immigration policies, and more tolerant towards diversity than many (if not all) jurisdictions. It is one thing to constantly bash your local expat population, it is another matter entirely to bash your tourism population. Cuban tourist #s are growing rapidly, Cayman’s are not. Stunts like these cost you millions in P.R. campaigns to undo, and if this gentleman’s stories were to get into certain groups, Cayman will not be able to undo that damage.

Point 2 – No question, certain Islamic jurisdictions have what appear to be archaic policies towards gender relations. But for those trying to use Cayman or any Western country as a beacon of progress, I would suggest you don’t. Just as common as it is to see women being physically acosted by men in those jurisdictions, so to is it as common to see women physically acost men in the West. It is so prevalent that mainstream TV actively makes comedy of this. Your courts routinely incarcerate men with 60% longer sentences for same crimes. Your boys systematically underperform female peers across all levels of education. Women represent 80% of consumer spending (see that massive dump in the middle of 7-mile – that’s a result of consumer spending). And the list can go on and on. Unfortunately some radical feminist, will probably respond to this post with false narrative drivel, but to all other that have some ounce of common sense, please get off your high horse about Western gender equality, It is a total crock of sh*t. The West is not better than Islam, we just choose to f*ck over a different gender.

Real Canadians don’t want to live in Toronto anymore because it is full of the worst kind of immigrants. Real Canadians can’t buy a home anymore in Toronto because of the costs. Immigrants and foreign investors driving up the prices artificially.

If only Canadians – me included – could grow a spine and restrict the influx of immigrants from one jurisdiction and spread it out. Toronto will soon be the little Middle East. Vancouver little China.

Christianity is literally one of the newer religions in the history of mankind, borrowing the best ideology of all previous religions and merging it into one. What we have is a stand-alone Anglican “Bishop” that literally practices the Book of Common Prayer from Blackbeard’s Pirate Era, and a Caribbean splinter faction of the Evangelical “Church of God”, of Anderson Indiana, that believes in Jesus Christ the Savior while simultaneously adhering to Old Testament creation myth, and vengeful right-wing doctrine.
