Jessie Perry

(CNS): Conroy Nairne (33) from George Town has admitted causing the death of  21-year-old Jessie Perry (left) by dangerous driving following an horrific collision on the West Bay Road more than 20 months ago when the crashed vehicle burst into flames. Nairne was driving a black Audi towards West Bay at around 1:30am on 14 September 2015, but as it reached the bend to the right near Seven Mile Public Beach, it crashed into the curved wall and flipped on its roof.  Police said they believed a fuel line ruptured and the car exploded as a result.

Appearing in Grand Court Friday, Nairne pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and a sentencing hearing was set for 18 July in order for reports to be submitted to the court.

Nairne was charged in February with causing Perry’s death.  Perry, who had been out celebrating her 21 birthday before the crash, died a few weeks following the collision in hospital in Jamaica, having sustained some 80% burns in the car fire. Nairne was also treated in hospital after the crash but recovered from his burns and injuries.

He was bailed to appear next month.

It is interesting to note the lack of description in regards to the manner in which the driver and passenger (victim) exited the vehicle….How did the driver get out? Did he get out of the car and flee the scene when he could have immediately called for an ambulance? Did he leave the girl in the car or did he merely drag her out and leave her on the ground terrified and alone while he fled the scene? I hope that these factors and unanswered questions are reviewed upon his sentencing. So so sad.

I can’t comprehend how the RCIPS can sleep at night with how many people could be saved if they would just patrol the streets. Blood is on their hands too.

So, is this not the right time to talk about how many horrific car accidents we have in the country that are directly connected to the lack of policing on the road? While I don’t think all accidents will be avoided, you will find a drastic decline in wrecks & DUI when the RCIPS start to pull people over for traffic offenses. No one cares about driving responsibly because they are not going to be pulled over.

Only one person to blame for this horrendous accident, and a tragedy that could have been prevented. That being the driver! Any intelligent person can see that speed was a big contributory factor to this tragedy. Vehicles don’t just “flip over.” May this poor young girl rest in peace and my condolences to her bereaved family. When will these ‘boy racers’ ever learn.

Agreed; will add, when will the girls learn not to get into cars with the “lost boys”…

Any-one who speeds with you in their car doesn’t care about you…

RIP beautiful girl, too young to go!

A tragic and particularly sad event. CNS, is it true she did not have any health insurance and that a lack of insurance may have interfered with her obtaining the best possible medical treatment overseas? If true, are her employers facing any repercussion for potential breaches of the health insurance law?

This story about no insurance came out right away. I’m also curious if it was true.

Let’s be realistic now, no hospital in Cayman is going to withhold emergency medical attention to save anyone’s life for lack of insurance, if this was indeed the case, as certain individuals seem to think. Do you think that these dedicated Doctors and nurses have hearts of stone? No human being that has any compassion would ever hold back treatment to save any life.
As reported, a body with 80% burns is a massive shock to the system. It would have been no less than a miracle and God’s will if this young lady survived this horrific accident. Please let us not point fingers at anyone as to why this beautiful young lady lost her life. Instead, why not commend all emergency services that carry out their duties and dedication, and the sacrifices they make to protect and serve these islands.
