A Honda CRV, used as the getaway car for Saturday night’s armed robbery

(CNS): Police are on the hunt for two men who fled the scene of the cash van robbery outside Foster’s Food Fair near the airport Saturday night in a white SUV, which was caught on CCTV. Both robbers, who were masked and armed, fired multiple shots during the heist on the amoured vehicle at around 7:10pm in the parking lot of the busy supermarket. One of the men was about 6-foot tall, wearing all black or dark-coloured clothing; the other was around 5’6”-5’8” wearing jeans and a grey/white hoodie top.

The men fled the scene in a white Honda CRV, approximately 1997-2000 year. The car drove out of the Foster’s parking lot on the airport side after the stick-up, making a right turn toward the mini-roundabout and Mango Tree. Police have confirmed that they got away with some cash but have not said how much.

A 51-year-old security guard who was shot in the arm and leg remains in hospital in stable condition.

Police said several people were at the scene when the robbery took place. Investigators are asking anyone who has not yet spoken to police about what they saw or those who have been in contact but have remembered further details to contact the RCIPS.

DI Collins Oremule can be reached at 936-8746 and DS Anderson Taylor at 925-3075. Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, to the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

It is amazing how many are blaming the crime on every other nationality but ourselves, what is wrong with our criminals, aren’t they smart enough to pull off something as big as this. Think again.

“PAPER” plates aside, why are certain people allowed to have tinted windows that are so dark you cant even see from the inside out? The police are very lax in their attitude towards this traffic offense because a lot of them are guilty of this also.

As much as we comment on the issues in this country we see this place become more of a shithole daily. Cops don’t care and those that do are messed up by the system. Our traffic laws are seemingly unenforced, poachers are having a feast on our endangered marine life, violence in the community, crimmals with guns and cops afraid of them. Every year we see the illicit activities become seemingly more acceptable and swept under the rug to maintain the illusion for tourists that cayman is crime free. It’s to the point were they don’t want to do anything as it messes with statistics and promotes the true reality that which we live in. They don’t want us getting leverage on them. The police are pressured into being politically correct so the delicate tourism product is not affected and corrupt public officials can continue there lucrative operations. The worst gang in this country is untouchable and cannot be named as they have overseas connections and currupt public officials but I’ve said too much already as persons who mess with them often times disappear.

We have arrived. The imaginary island in the sun where the common citizen is unarmed and the Govt and Police have every honest citizen thinking they are safe. Criminals from Jamaica, Honduras and other places can come do some checking out. Leave come back on the midnight special do their job and be back home in three or four days. Couple that with our home grown stink and we have a smeltering pot for criminal activity.

12:41pm as you said, ‘home grown’, they don’t have to come anywhere else. They see enough on tv, from USA,Canada,UK and elsewhere. Just stop pointing everything to Jamaica and Honduras. You could also start pointing to the parents too.

Well, at a recent neighborhood meeting which included two RCIP officers, we were told that perhaps the public gets the kind of policing it accepts….. So maybe time to demand better policing for law and order to be restored, especially things that can so easily be dealt with like traffic law violations?

Elected officials and Governor – do you hear us?????????

Hello! Did we just spent millions of dollars on equipment thats not functioning??? :/

Just heard DCOP Walton on Rooster – says absence of plates a DVL issue not a police issue. Right. Cause failing to actually ticket anyone who doesn’t have plates or a temporary licence ticket on clear display isn’t a policing issue. Same guy is asking the public to report anything suspicious – like a vehicle with no plates casing the scene before the robbery! Well, message for the DCOP – this is what happens when you just let things like tint and plates slide – pretty soon its so commonplace that it isn’t suspicious but routine, and one of your sources of valuable info for investigating major crimes is gone, and you have made it so much easier to commit the crime in the first place.

BTW – how the h*ll does it take 3 days to find the getaway car? Parked on a public road, and having driven there through the RCIPS’ wonderful CCTV system?

If you haven’t realised already the CCTV which government spent millions on is not affective in the least bit.

It’s hard to say how affective (relating to moods, feelings etc.) it is, but it certainly is effective, at least for whomever is collecting the monthly maintenance charges.

Don’t you realize its not the CCTV that is the issue, but the damn GOVERNMENT?!?!?!

    • Anonymous says:

I’m not sure we were listening to the same radio show. He said that DVDL is responsible for the issuing of license plates, which is true. He didn’t say that the absence of plates was not a problem or not a police concern. Maybe you should listen a little closer before pontificating from the couch.

      • Jotnar says:

True, but whilst he said that DVDL were responsible for issuing (or not) licence plates, he singularly failed to say why RCIPS don’t do anything about cars that don’t display plates – even the temporary ones. Why not comment on the rest of the post – how does the DCOP expect the public to report vehicles as suspicious when RCIPS manifestly fails to enforce the laws on tint and plates that make the vehicle suspicious? I may be pontificating from the couch, but I would like to see the RCIPS explain why they are on the couch rather than doing their job!

Jotnar if you read over the first part of your post then you’ll find the answer to the question you asked in the second part.

From the photo, that looks like one of the hundreds of cars that don’t have plates nowadays. Why?Because government ran out of old plates before the new ones arrived.

If so, this is a scandal and government incompetence on a monumental scale. And don’t tell me they’re supposed to have paper plates taped to their windows. Everyone ignores that so-called rule, and the police ignore them ignoring it!

Where are we with the new plates, anyway? Anywhere else people would rightly lose their jobs for this level of mind-boggling incompetence.

Please. They would have just taken the plates off, as done in the past. Or steal a set off of another vehicle. Stop perpetuating ignorance.

      • Jotnar says:

Well, if you have one vehicle with no plates it attracts attention. If you have one in a sea of others with no plates, it doesn’t. And if the police never check plates against vehicle descriptions – which they clearly don’t if they don’t even ticket vehicles with no plates – you can get away with stealing another set of plates. If they do check, you have to match the model and colour if you are going to use stolen plates or risk a traffic stop on the way to the robbery.

And lets not start on how ridiculous it is to ask the public if anyone saw these guys in the vehicle before the robbery with their masks off when the windows are blacked out. Same issue. If you allow people to drive blacked out vehicles don’t be disappointed when no one sees the guys inside, or notices them putting their masks on before the robbery.

The police didn’t commit the crime, and it would probably have taken place anyway. But it would have been harder to commit, with a greater risk of the robbers being caught, if the police actually enforced the traffic laws. Stop making excuses for slack policing.

Hmmm, looks over tinted in the photo. Was it reported stolen? Can Dept of Vehicle Licensing pull up cars by make and model? No plates I assume, but one would only need an inkjet printer to fake one with those silly temporary plates govt is issuing. Marl road is that there is CCTV footage of the robbers, but it is not being released? If true, why?

If you remember 11:45, a criminal was pulled over in Jamaica, with a lot of CI Cash. It’s simple really….take it back and then come here with some. Not all at once, but bit by bit. Not that hard really, if you enough sense to think about it.

But you just don’t want no one to talk the truth about the Caribbean crime capital!
