Mongkol Srilamai

(CNS): Police have now named the 44-year-old male resident of Grand Cayman who died Wednesday after snorkelling in the water near a house at Rum Point where he was attending a party. He was Mongkol Srilamai, who was originally from Thailand. Police said the RCIPS Joint Marine Unit, the Cayman Islands Fire Service and a marine conservation officer nearby all responded after a report was made to 911 at 2:15 yesterday that several swimmers and snorkellers were in distress. Three swimmers were pulled from the water by people on the beach and CPR was performed on the man, but he was unresponsive.

He was taken to George Town hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said further details will be released once the man’s relatives have been properly notified.

You folks … smh … How you know what happen to him??? I understand the poor man had no external injuries. It could have been a simple cramp … yes, a simple cramp in his arm or leg can cause him to drown

Could we please be informed as to the reason ‘several swimmers and snorkellers were in distress’.Was it because they were drinking; was it due to strong currents. If it was due to strong current, could the area be identified so others can become aware and be on guard.Perhaps signs can be erected.

I saw 3 snorkllers in trouble outside the reef but were push back over reef by the waves. A guy in a blue uniform and red life jacket swum out and pulled 2 guys in. One of the guys was laying in the water the other was struggling to move him and looked in trouble. Uniform guy try to give kiss of life and hit the big guy on the chest in water near reef. He then pulled both guys on the beach. Uniform guy went back and grabbed another guy who looked in trouble.
That’s what I saw there was no party I could see just 3 people and people helping.
Uniform guy was put in a ambulance and taken to hospital I think.

  3. My condolences to his family and friends. Its a pity they didn’t go to Health City rather than town as it may have helped as that may have made a difference time wise. Its a shame as we have such a good hospital that close..

Except that HCCI is NOT equipped and staffed as an emergency room hospital. There are cases where they take them to HCCI but there’s a protocol on which emergencies go there and which ones don’t, for the good of the patient.

What an ignorant oaf – nobody is interested in you self-serving anecdote about your own near death experience.

    • SKEPTICAL says:

..and by the way – he was snorkeling – not on a boat. Read the report.

sorry. but too much alcohol consumed by boaters and swimmers at rum point on week-ends and marine unit knows it? yet does nothing about it?
