GT man fails in bid to cut sentence in stabbing case

(CNS): Corey Bowen (31) represented himself when he appeared before the Court of Appeal this week in an attempt to reduce his sentence of five years and three months for stabbing a love rival multiple times in the head, neck and stomach during a fight. But the George Town man’s efforts were in vain as the judges pointed out that he had received a sentence that was already at the lower end of the guidelines for the intentional wounding offence and the trial judge had taken into consideration the factors in the case.

With no lawyer to represent him at the appeal, the panel allowed Bowen to explain why he believed his sentence was excessive. He claimed that he was not only remorseful but that at the time of the stabbing he was in an emotional state as his brother had been shot and injured that very same night in an unrelated incident. He told the court that he had been a law abiding citizen before this incident with a job. But now his six children were about to become homeless because he is in jail and cannot provide for them.

The three judges were not swayed, however, as they said that the judge had taken his emotional state and good character into consideration, and with no aggravating factors the sentence was not at all excessive.

Bowen was convicted in March 2016 following a trial. He was found guilty of stabbing his victim at least three times during a fight over the mother of Bowen’s children, who was also involved with his victim. Bowen had driven his “baby momma” home on a night in June 2015, and as they arrived he spotted her new lover in her car. As the men exchanged angry words Bowen got out of his car with a knife and the complainant knocked him to the ground. When both men began to brawl Bowen had stabbed his victim several times. But he claimed he did not have a knife when his was knocked to the ground and had used it in the fight for self-defence.

The jury found him guilty of GBH with intent, and at the time the Justice Alastair Malcolm, who presided over the case and handed down the five-year plus sentence, had pointed out that when a person decides to use a knife in a fight, it’s chance whether the victim is killed, suffers a life-changing injury or gets away relatively unscathed.

First off we need to stop and think. In no way were Corey’s actions right…but what about ” the baby momma”? Why was he dropping her to a location.. did they have something still for him to feel this way and then realizing that she was playing him…she seems to have a car…if Corey was her ex and she had a new lover…why was she with Corey?

Because the majority of humans do stupid things where it comes to “love”, control freaks, people wanting to hurt, all kinds of stupidity even from allegedly intelligent people. Still no excuse for it though.

      Stop blaming the victim.

Maybe if you can take a look at the below paragraph it would answer all of your questions, and actually make sense rather than the misleading news above.
      Note the correct changes were made in CAPS below;

Corey Bowen (31) was convicted in March 2016 following a trial. He was found guilty of stabbing the victim at least three times during a fight involving the victim, Bowen had driven his “baby momma” home the MORNING of June 2015, and as they arrived, he spotted her EX-LOVER inside of her car WHICH WAS PARKED BLOCKS AWAY FROM HER HOUSE FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE. As the men exchanged angry words Bowen got out of his car with a knife and the complainant knocked him to the ground. When both men began to brawl Bowen had stabbed his victim several times. But he claimed he did not have a knife when his was knocked to the ground and had used it in the fight for self-defense.

AND TO ALL THE IGNORANT PEOPLE COMMENTING WHAT THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA ABOUT MUCH LESS TO COMMENT NOTE THIS IF YOUR FATHER HAD USED A CONDOM YOUR ASSES WOULDNT BE ON HERE TRYING TO SEEK UNNECESSARY ATTENTION (SOUNDS LIKE YALL NEVER HAD ATTENTION AS A CHILD) ACTS OF BAD PARENTING!

And what is the option of deportation at the end of his sentence, we need to start looking at that option more seriously on this island.

Obviously this man has made some poor choices when it came to using protection, not with one but three different “baby mommas”. He’s reported as being 31 years old and having 6 children to provide for not just monetarily but he also has a responsibility to be a father of good character and provide his children emotional stability. When we become parents we no longer get to live a life “of pleasing ourselves” we have responsibilities! children are the innocent ones, we can’t turn back the hand of time but what Corey, his parents and the mothers of his 6 children can do from this point on is to work together to make sure the children know they are loved, are provided for emotionally and most of all learn that all actions result in consequences. Corey use this time to seek healing so you can become the father your children need. And to his mother Jen, I’m sure it’s hard to see the negative comments made but don’t sink to their level of responding, when our children make poor choices we have to let them suffer their consequences and pray they learn their lesson and become better people having gone through it. give this situation to God. Community of Cayman Lets pray and lift this entire family up, come along side them and not continue to be a society that tears down. Corey you were wrong for what you did theres no question about that but it’s up to you to make it right, serve your time, seek healing & forgiveness and make wiser choices in the future.

Thoughtless behavior and the track records shows he does not learn from his mistakes. It is the people like him ruining the society multiplying like feral dogs.

I only pray that Corey wakes up from his dream world and use the time in prison to change his ways for the better… It is possible, he can do it. Jen, continue to encourage him. His children needs their father. That being said, I know for a fact that he has anger issues and has been abusive to at least two of his baby mothers. What’s done is done and he is serving his time. I do hope that he take changing seriously and occupy himself with positive things.

I want to thank all of you for your comments good or bad. I’m a strong black woman god made me that way because he knew what I would have to face.

He came to my house many years ago with the a/c technicians because his grandparents were trying to get him to settle into a job. He did nothing, slouched around kept checking his phone while the other guys (Jamaicans) worked and was damn faisty when I asked him to do something. Though 100% Jamaican blood, to him he is a Caymanian and he wasn’t going to do a friggin thing to help those a/c guys. I told the Bowens don’t send him again or I will stop using you. Some time later the company went bankrupt.

    • Anonymous says:

I had a similar experience. He showed up, did no work and spent the time on his phone and hitching up his pants which in the style of the day for young men who were looking stupid girls to breed were slipping down his ass crack every five minutes. A total zero.

      • Anonymous says:

Wow you right bobo, I had forgotten the hitching up of the pants part. Of course the technicians (Jamaican) he was with with were dressed for work but he was a Caymanian (with 100%Jamaican blood) so dem damn Jamaicans grateful fe get a job could get up in the hot ceiling to check the air handler while I check my phone to see which chicks I gonna breed later. Poor old Mr and Mrs Bowen, when they left zero in Jamaica and came here and worked hard they never thought they would end up breeding a criminal family.

    • jen says:

So why you have to go as far as 100% Jamaican blood. I’m 100% American blood and proud of it.

And the poverty cycle grows more tentacles.
What chance do those kids have in this world?
Baby momma’s as their Mother figure and a convicted criminal for a father figure.
    Wow.

They have every chance if they are not lazy, greedy and immoral. Criminals are criminals because they lack morals and have weak character. Do not blame poverty.

      • Anonymous says:

Actually poverty is a MAJOR contributing factor in criminality. Hence why young people need to stop having kids they CANNOT afford! It’s a vicious cycle.

At the end of the day no matter how much a mother or father argues and fights with their children, once they become an adult there is only so much a parent can do to influence their decisions. You can not blame the parents. Cory is clearly of age and comes from a good family who would have raised him well. The fact that you all are being so blatantly disrespectful and judgmental to his mother shows you may not have been as fortunate?! It is always so EASY to comment and judge others because you are not in their position. Instead of judging Mrs. Bowen, you all should take into consideration that this could be you someday! Nobody knows what the future holds. It is so easy to get into trouble but so hard to get out of it.

As a mother, I understand where Mrs. Bowen is coming from. A parent has an inevitable bond with their child/ren, so regardless of what he or she does a parents love will be boundless! So do bear in mind those of you with children that you must not jeer at the mistakes others make for you do not know what will happen to your children.

Lesbian, Gay, Rapist, Murder or Thief they are all someone’s children and worthy of love. Judge not lest you be judged!

Instead of tearing one another down let us pray that our children remain on the right track in a society that neither of us had to grow up in. The peer pressures and the negative influences that our children face these days is nothing of what we were faced with when we were their age! Deflate your egos a bit and consider how serious times are in Cayman.

Cory I pray that you are able to see just how far your mother will go to stand by you. Please appreciate how much you have hurt her and despite how embarrassing this all is for her she still stands by your side. I pray that you learn from your mistakes and that when you are released that you will make better choices!

Mrs, Bowen, I am sure that you did your best. I pray that you will find comfort in knowing that you did.

The Bowens came here like many and built a business and there sons work in the business for years…….my son Cory Bowen work there for awhile he had no part in bringing down there business……so when this anonymous gossip monger typical of some Caymanians talk they need to find out the real truth…….yes he has six kids by three young ladies who knew the consequences of not using condoms……we all have choices don’t we?……

    • Anon says:

Back to school dear; “their” sons, not “there”.

You can also use ONE full stop after each sentence.

Anyway, you keep making excuses and condoning this man’s immature and disgusting behavior; perhaps you are his mother or aunt or grandmother.

Typically, in Cayman you see a lot of these cases; no male figures to look up to with mothers and “grannies” coddling the males in the family.

We do all have choices; but some people make the same stupid choices again and again and again.

You must first learn the meanings of community and rehabilitation. Its a joint effort requiring unity. This is a quality that is not taught in school, nor amongst cutthroat heathens – people who are all for themselves…”What can i gain?”…”Where will that get me?”…”How can i shine bright like a diamond”?…#Ridiculous

Unity also doesnt work if it isnt atleast both ways in any event. It must also be true…but you on here lying….like a mofi about Anon…#youInternethider #yousneakEr #youturndown #youthirsty #youweak #yobihhweak
