One shot outside 7MB nightclub

(CNS) Updated Monday:  The man who was shot outside a nightclub in the Seven Mile Beach tourist area early Saturday morning has now been released from hospital, police have said. The second man, who was struck with a gun and not shot as originally believed, discharged himself shortly after the incident. Initial reports had indicated that two people had been shot near Fete Nightclub on the West Bay Road this weekend.

However, in an update an RCIPS spokesperson clarified that when armed units arrived at the scene at about 3:15am on Saturday, 4 February, they found a 26-year-old man with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.  The 29-year-old man who was hit with the gun was taken to hospital but discharged himself.

The Fete Nightclub was the scene of another shooting just over a month ago when one man was shot multiple times.

Police appealed to anyone with information, or who was in the area around the time of this latest incident to contact the Criminal Investigation Department at the George Town Police Station at 949-4222. Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS via the Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

LANDLORDS – light up the exterior of your buildings. Clubs, bars, restuarants, etc. Every establishment offering late evening activities should providing more lighting. LED is a lot cheaper now to install and operate. If you do not, then be prepared to not be able to rent your buildings.

The cheapskate land owners need to be fined into doing the right thing. CITA and DOT are mute. Until fines happen, nothing will happen. Injuries and deaths have proven to be insufficient compulsion! It begs the question, how many people will have to be killed, ice-picked, stabbed, shot, pistol-whipped, raped, maimed, or wrestled into the trunks of cars annually to compel these “professional tourism alliances” to lobby Cabinet to do the right thing? As you said, these lights are cheap, bright and way more cost effective than the few old yellowing incandescent lights that may exist in expanding parking areas. The stinginess and collective reluctance of those supposed experts in charge, reflects very poorly on our preparedness for tourist customers. We don’t even have a sidewalk on the east side of West Bay Road in the heart of our “hotel & tourism zones”. Lots of work to be done Cayman…

Wow all these parents on here blaming politicians and the police for not raising their kids for them. You could put my kid in Afghanistan and he would not fire a shot so stop blaming everything else but your poor parenting skills – thank you!!!

It’s not poor parenting, it’s the complete absence of parenting. These children grow up like feral animals with zero guidance and values what-so-ever!

I guess it’s time to change the clubs name again. How many names has it gone through now? LOL

Maybe they should just call it “the club” next. that way, in the news, it will just say “the club has a shooting” and no one will be the wiser.

You can go back to the “Rum Heads” era and long before that…their fathers and grandfathers were getting into the same Friday night “machete fights” and crack-fueled dominos squabbles. It goes back as far as you care to look. Birth control education and availability would help greatly in 2017.

How many houses on this island would need to be searched to find these guns and gunmen, not many really search these areas and take back the country. Offer better rewards to turn in gunmen and guns,, maybe the UK is not the place to look for police leadership,. It would be better to get control of this situation early when its still managable this is a small island how many places can they hide if there was a real offensive to rute them out

Something sure needs too change these headlines do not help the tourism industry, where will tourists go mexico has gun violence JA the same,. Cayman is catching up with the negitive headlines and with such a small island this dooes not bode well, perhaps cuba with be the winner in all this. Everyones lively hood is oon the line here

Isn’t there a law that night clubs and bars MUST have operational CCTV camaras in their premises and parking lots???

Come on! Too often we are having these crimes committed and witnesses are in fear of retaliation to speak out! MLA’S do something!

Correction. Let’s work to remove all illegal guns from our community. The legal ones need to stay and Caymanians and other legal residents, who are good and just citizens, need more freedom when it comes to the right to defend themselves. This could include the properly managed right to bear arms ourselves. I pose the question: ” If a criminal knew that they could be approaching a home, individual, or even group of indivoduals that may be legally armed and properly trained to handle, what would the likelihood be that they choose to approach carelessly? Prevention perhaps?

What is going on? This is in the tourist district- across from 2 hotels. Tourism is the bread & butter. I have been going to GC since 2000. Used to spend most nights on holiday at the then “Next Level ” nightclub. Great memories . Then, the shootings started – on the dance floor, in the parking lots. My trips to GC are becoming less each year & I used to go 3 times a year. I haven’t been in 8 months now. Scary how arguments are being solved with the gun. A sometimes permanent solution to a problem that just walking away & a good night sleep would most likely cure.

Nightclubs need to know to put extra security on their premises on “pay days”. RCIPS should be on high alert. Fueled up man-childs and dead beats can be relied upon to blow their entire earnings to “impress the ladies” and get into these violent territorial scuffles. It happens like clockwork and will never change. Why aren’t we learning?

You’d be surprised foo. Lots of them GOT some kind of work and most hard working Caymanians can’t even get a chance to pump gas. OPEN YOUR EYE…and whoever you thinks not working will soon be..employers just like YOU are afraid of thugs. Thugs is suits, baggy clothes, fitness clothing or Caribbean bike life shirts….many form of bullies and thugs friend. #OYE

      • Anonymous says:

The capacity “pay day” nightclub is the recurring setting where those with steady pay-checks mingle “in the VIP” with drug consumers, and the local gang barons that propel our underground commerce. That’s why the easily-offended hoodlums are in attendance with tools of the trade. This is not the “how” or “why”, just the recurring “where” and “when” of our gun violence. We should see the pattern by now and plan accordingly.

  16. MM says:

A certain kind of people flock to establishments that provide a certain kind of atmosphere.

The boom-boom gangsta rap and reggae music always attract these incidents and establishments of business that survive on the audiences that can actually stomach that kind of crap are ALWAYS prone to gun crime, murder and violence.

Night clubs that attract these LITTLE BOYS will continue to wreak havoc on our community until they raise their standards and stop making their facilities attractive to wanna-be “badman”.

RCIPS – where is the gun amnesty?????? I know crime keeps you employed, but there are still other issues to address even if we discourage the violence. Where were the patrols? There should be patrols passing these places every 15 minutes and parked outside at closing time like they did years ago!

    • Anonymous says:

I remember when a group of RCIP would walk thru the clubs on busy nights. Might be a good policy to start doing again.

    • Anonymous says:

So they should play christian rock as to avoid attracting the wrong crowd I assume MM?

    • Anonymous says:

Reggae music is antithetical to violence. Get your musical genres straight!

    • Anonymous says:

I have to agree with you MM. I wonder why this sort of violence only seems to happen in the clubs that play certain types of music, which in turn attracts only certain types of clientele. You don’t hear of shootings by Barolo’s or Royal Palms for example. Clubs that play for example pop music and the top 40 hits will not get hoodlums in it. Can’t imagine them hanging out in a club with their pants around their knees thinking they’re cool with Brittany Spears playing in the background. This club is in the perfect spot to attract all the tourists but as long as they continue to cater to this wrong type of crowd with their gangster crap music we will continue to hear of this sort of violence.

  17. Anonymous says:

Shutting down a business that is taking all possible precautions to avoid such incidents misses the point entirely. The incidents will merely move location. The solution is to eradicate guns from our community once and for all. We should focus our efforts on that and stop blaming fully compliant businesses.

    • Anonymous says:

If they changed the music they played, the problems would go away. Jimmy Buffet fans (which many tourists happen to be) do not have a tendency to behave this way. Just sayin.

      • Anonymous says:

I agree the “clientele” will just move elsewhere, but that is a good thing. Having the shootings on the busy Seven Mile strip is not good. It is filled with tourists who come here because they are under the impression that we are a safe vacation destination.

However, how do we move the clientele elsewhere? Does the government subsidise a club in other areas of the islands to draw in the unsavory element with thug music and cheap henny?

While we throw up our hand and gnash our teeth with despair, the local schools (NOT just the public ones) keep pushing out kids with limited values and no buy-in to our current society…..Cayman needs to take a hard look at itself and begin to make some choices.

      • Anonymous says:

Absolutely if you changed the music the clientele will move away. Can’t picture thugs dancing (or standing looking cool) with Brittany Spear or Taylor Swift playing. These clubs are catering to a very specific crowd with the music they play. Change the music and you’ll change the crowd. It’s not difficult to understand…..

    • Anonymous says:

These shootings continue at a few night clubs in the heart of our tourists vacation destination. What will be the international news and impact to Cayman, if a tourist is shot and killed?

It’s very sad to see what is happening at clubs and in our communities today. It may not be the fault of the business per say but these clubs clearly cannot prevent these shootings and are attractive hangout spots for many of these criminal IDIOTS! We cannot continue to have clubs on West Bay Road being popular shooting spots.

I understand your point but do you realistically believe guns can / will be eradicated from our community anytime in our lifetime? How many people would you suggest should die at a club location before it is shut down, one, two, three?

It seems like gun sales is a lucrative business for criminals here and I would wager that for every one taken off the street, there is 100 out there or pouring in to our island annually.

That is not to say that the authorities should give up the fight. A good place to start is to amend gun legislation to Life in prison if found in possession of an unlicensed gun! It used to be 20 years but ooh that was too tough, so our joker legislators reduced it to 10. Obviously 10 is not a detterant to these donkeys!

    • Anonymous says:

So when some innocent person is killed, try telling their love ones that at least the business was fully compliant! And while you’re at it, attend the funeral!

    • Archimedes says:

There is no need for anyone to possess a gun on this island.

        • No hope for the less evolved. says:

Cars may not be designed for the purpose of killing anything but they’re people who do use automobiles as a weapon and a very dangerous weapon indeed it is at the hands of the wrong people. Look no further than the tragedy that took place in Paris. Realistically speaking anything can be used as a weapon, even words and silence.

Good move the location to West Bay

11:39am While i agree with your sentiment, the only how we can eradicate guns from our communities, is by eradicating stupid mentality and stopping the flow of drugs and guns from nearby countries. We are not producing or selling either one ior the other.
Start draining the swamp, whether it is imported or home grown.

      • Anonymous says:

Far too many (including public, politicians and police) have long been sympathetic to our “harmless” pot seamen that simultaneously smuggle people, guns, ammo, cocaine, heroin, Venezuelan gas, and new drugs most have never heard of before. Like it or not, those that happily smoke weed recreationally, or seek illicit CBD Oil are also fueling this illicit enterprise and funding the short-lived, gun-toting gang narcissists and sentries that attend our nightclubs and shoot people with “no witnesses” and “non-functional CCTV”. The gang leadership are sufficiently professional and organized to recover $40mln in narcotics from a police evidence locker within a fortified police station without anyone having seen anything (after a year). Safe to assume the scale of this swamp is large, wide, and deep, and will be determined to stay concealed (regardless of what happens with legalization of ganja/CBD oil in future). I dare say, nobody living within proximity to that industry is going to surrender their illegal weapons, and more will actively want to acquire them going forward.
