Car crash on Esterley Tibbetts Highway, 3 January 2017

(CNS): A 24-year-old driver of a car that flipped over and smashed into a CUC light pole on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway Tuesday afternoon emerged unhurt but he has been arrested for leaving the scene of an accident, driving while not qualified, driving without insurance, using a vehicle with expired registration and using a vehicle without a certificate. The single-car accident happened just south of Governor’s Way, shortly before 4pm on 3 January.

Police said that a cream-colored Toyota Mark II flipped over at the median into a CUC pole, which broke and fell into the centre median. When police officers arrived the Toyota was partially blocking the southbound lane; no one was in the vehicle  and the driver was not present nearby.

CUC staff attended to address the broken light pole, and the vehicle was cleared from the road.

Following police inquiries a 24-year-old man from West Bay was arrested and taken into police custody. He is currently on police bail.

The 35-year-old owner of the vehicle, who is from Bodden Town, was warned for prosecution for permitting to drive without being qualified, permitting to drive without insurance, permitting to drive without a certificate of roadworthiness, permitting to drive with expired registration and failing to notify authorities of alteration of particulars.

    Mandatory speed test?

24 year old man? That’s a 24 yr old boy in my book

The idiot who hits me on the road while driving without insurance, license etc will wish he/she would have never set foot near a vehicle that day!

It would be nice if we could do a picture collage of all the traffic offenses witnessed on a daily basis to be then presented to the Commissioner and Governor to demonstrate how out of control out roads are. It seems that they have yet to catch on how big this issue is…

This is craziness as its finest and just shows how out of control things are on our roads and how RCIP has not done their jobs for the past years…Let’s try to clean up all trash in 2017 – the one lying next to the road and the one driving on our roads!

Prosecuted those idiots and charge them through the nose!

I agree this type of incident occurs in the UK and the US and elsewhere. The difference is in the statistics, for a small population we must knock over more light poles per driver than anywhere else, and that’s without winter weather hazards, steep hills, floods etc, to contend with.

    Deport them both!

More time I be wondering who these “bright” people are that be writing these comments.. If you know anything you would know that the owner will lose his license just like the driver.. Not to mention a big fine to go with it.. Obliviously they would have to go to court before this happens.. Unless the owner says the driver stole the car he cant go to jail for this.. Smh.. Next thing.. “What kind of culture keeps churning out these kids with no respect for the laws and rights of other people. This culture and its followers will not survive long in the modern world.” LOL! What part of the world are you from?? Its crazy to me how people try to make Cayman out to be this lawless war town full of harden criminals.. Take a look around.. There is not a country on this planet that doesn’t have to deal with this type of stuff.. A young person driving a car that he shouldn’t be driving?? Yeh that only happens here in Cayman! (Did you see what I did there?? That was sarcasm.. :)) Smh

“Unless the driver says he stole the car he cant go to jail for this…” really? The charges include leaving the scene of an accident, driving while not qualified, driving without insurance, using a vehicle with expired registration and using a vehicle without a certificate. Leaving the scene is an offence with a penalty including imprisonment of yup to 12 months. SO are driving whilst unqualified or without a valid licence And the offence for the last two extends to accessories e.g. an owner who knowingly allows an unqualified or unlicenced driver to use the car.

The fact the driver was arrested was a bit of a clue, and you should really take a little more care to be informed before accusing others of not being “bright”. SMH indeed,

That’s why you shouldn’t masturbate and drive kiddo. 2 hands on the wheel.

Why are you all up fussing for , because he is not a car fitness inspector.

  15. Dan says:

The court system recently gave 3 months for hit and run so I suspect this guy will only allowed to legally drive at the end of the month.

  16. Anonymous says:

The owner of the vehicle has a liability and should be forced to account. That will give people pause in the future in lending their vehicles to irresponsible maniacs

    • Jotnar says:

Owner didn’t just lend the vehicle to someone irresponsible, he let someone who had no driving licence drive his vehicle which he knew was not insured, had no certificate and an expired registration. You cannot always realise if someone is going to be irresponsible, but all the other factors must have been perfectly obvious, and the owner himself was breaking the law each and every time he drove the vehicle. Charge them both and disqualify them for driving – set an example.

I said put up speed camera and it will help a lot . Speeding tickets will be sent to drivers address. If they don’t pay on time it will acumilate more money and they won’t be able to license their vehicle and less they pay up everything or end up losing the vehicle and driving licence if caught driving again.

    • Diogenes says:

They have a thousand unserved warrants for unpaid tickets already – what makes you think people will pay ones produced by a speed camera any more than ones issued by a policeman? Or that the RCIPS will do anything when they don’t pay?

    • Soiled Son says:

Nice idea that would work in a civilized country.

  18. Anonymous says:

“Driving while not qualified, driving without insurance, using a vehicle with expired registration and using a vehicle without a certificate”

And he still drives like a complete muppet! Anyone with half a grain of sense would drive slowly and try to avoid being noticed by the police. He should be locked up for stupidity alone.

  19. Anonymous says:

…not to mention if he had hit another vehicle, the damage could not be repaired by his non-existent insurance. This is a major crime and should be prosecuted as such.

  20. Anonymous says:

The car owner was “warned for prosecution” seriously? I saw this maniac doing at least 80-90 miles per hour as he blew by me on the bypass, lucky no one was killed. There needs to be a dedicated traffic unit for the bypass with a zero tolerance policy for traffic infractions. Just wait until the new four lane speedway opens up.

    • Jotnar says:

Car OWNER was warned for letting the other guy use the car – the maniac driving the car was arrested.

      • Anonymous says:

You’re missing the point. Fact of the matter is that it is the owner of the vehicle who is directly responsible for any damage it may cause. They should be prosecuted as well. Until that starts to happen, people will continue loaning their unlicensed/uninsured vehicles, and we’ll keep seeing articles like this.

  21. Anonymous says:

Must have been in a sock state after such a flip.

  22. Southsounder says:

    How about adding:

    Obstructing the Highway
    Replacement power pole costs
    Wasting Police time
    Towing fee
A Public apology on TV for wasting tax payers money…
…oh and have the car scrapped and charge him for that

  23. Anonymous says:

I guess this is one of those who are against the new EVR system the Government wants to install.

  24. Anonymous says:

Good! Make sure to name them. This is ridiculous and someone could have been killed.
