A group in the Cayman Islands join millions around the world marching in support of women’s issues in the face of the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States

(CNS): Joining millions in the US and worldwide who came out in support of women’s rights the day after Donald Trump was inaugurated as president, about 50 people in Cayman gathered on the beach Saturday, 21 January, in solidarity with the Women’s March in Washington, DC. The diverse group represented various nationalities, young and old, residents and visitors, but all were seeking an opportunity to share their feelings and concerns about the election and its potential ramifications.

Those taking part offered a variety of reasons for coming out, but a central theme was a call for equal rights for all. One little girl held up a sign saying simply, “Be nice.” A number of men were there as well to support women in general and those in their lives.

Facilitators of the event, which they called an “organic” gathering rather than a strictly organised affair, were pleased with the turnout and the enthusiasm of the participants.

“I wanted the chance to find support among others and discover that together, we can have hope,” said one of the women behind the gathering. “I heard from countless others that a sense of despair and anguish took over their lives the day following the US election. Since I wouldn’t be in the States on 21 January, I started asking if other people in Cayman had plans to peacefully gather in the reflection of those marching in DC and across America.”

She explained her queries led to two other women who also wanted to do something to express their commitment to human rights for all in light of concerns for the new administration in the US.

The event on Saturday showed that “regardless of citizenship, all countries need to address discrimination against others for their gender, race, colour, creed, sexual/gender orientation, religion, country of origin, as well as those disenfranchised who have rarely had a voice, let alone a seat at the table,” she said.

One participant, whose family marched in the US wearing a pin with her photo so she could be with them in spirit, said she was happy she could feel like part of a community here. As a teacher, she was particularly concerned about education issues.

“Equal education for all people is very important for me and I believe that may be in jeopardy,” she said, adding that being with people who had a like mindset who wanted to have their voices heard made her feel she was taking action against something that seemed out of control.

Enough. I can’t believe for a minute that the amount of hateful and hurtful comments on this thread are representative of all Caymanians. I realize that this is all third page news at this point, but please let us hear your voices — the voices of those who believe in equal rights for all, LGBTQ rights, religious freedom, opposition to discrimination in all its forms, building bridges and not walls, all those who fight for peace and inclusion. I know you’re out there.

I find the reaction from these so-called “Christians” truly disturbing. I will continue to raise my voice against inequality and do whatever I can to fight for equal rights. I was there that day and there was no vulgarity. We set a wonderful example for our children by demonstrating how to stand up for equal rights. I would do it again anytime.

  2. anonymous says:

Why such vulgar signs were allowed in the first place, especially in the presence of children? Does this Christian country allow it? Where were family protection authorities

I am truly disheartened by the number of negative comments here. A group of people got together to support other people in standing up for equal rights. Why do you have to be say such vile things in your posts? And why such a fuss about language? There were no swear words used. Vagina and pussy are just plain old every day words. It was the man-child Donald Trump who boasted about grabbing women’s pussies. What kind of an example did he set? As the little girl’s sign said “Be Nice”.

      • Anonymous says:

Look at the filthy signs! Are you blind? And you take children to these things! Wacko fanaticism at its best!

OMG Trump was bragging about sexual assault!!

          • Anonymous says:

So now you classify every man as a sexual assailant just because he said he grabbed somebody’s privates. Guess most men would be guilty according to your sensitivities. So many man-haters!

            • Anonymous says:

Yes, I would classify any man (or woman) who grabs somebody else’s private parts without consent as a sexual assailant. Definitely. I’m not sure how this makes me a man-hater, but I would certainly hate the man who would attempt to do this to me.

I am a Caymanian, by paper but still a Caymanian. Seeing this type of behavior promoted here particularly with the nasty language and the involvement of small children really makes me angry. The people of the United States chose their President legally and democratically through their own democratic system of voting which is the electoral college. Some people say he shouldn’t be President because he didn’t get the majority vote but that is not how the United States elects its Presidents. If anything, the people in the United States should be fighting to get this changed before the next election.

It is not our place in Cayman to protest their system or their democratically elected President. How would we feel if we had a bunch of Americans walking our streets with signs of this type right after our general election in May talking about people’s private parts in front of our small children?…Is this what we want to introduce into our society?

I have seen Caymanians march against things they were not happy with but they always did it with dignity, orderly and without this type of behavior.

These people are simply unhappy because their candidate didn’t win. It happens. Get over it. Rather than continuing to divide your country, come together and support your President just like you have done in your past. What you are doing is only promoting divisiveness and you all need to stop acting like sore losers and work to change the rules for the next elections since you are unhappy your candidate lost..

    • Anonymous says:

You nailed it, thank you! Such vulgarity in the presence of children is embarrassing.

      • Anonymous says:

Hilarious comment given the foul language I hear from your children every day. Children in Cayman are exposed to sex at a very young age, allowed to hear adult conversations and display sexualized behaviour. So dont be outraged by this little march, save your outrage for a very sick and unsafe society for your children.

    • Anonymous says:

The problem is also that we are sending our children away to universities that are indoctrinating and brainwashing our children. Be careful parents. They return claiming to be atheists and agnostics despite growing up in the church here in Cayman. I know of a child who is religious and was constantly bullied because she didn’t believe in all the crap they were trying to force her to accept. Be very vigilant.

  5. Trump says:

Here we go again. Such crap. Nothing but crap. We do not need to get involved because others are doing it. WRONG. God is in charge and DONALD TRUMP IS PRESIDENT. We have to stop letting these people into our islands to negatively affect us. YOU ALL NEED TO LEAVE ASAP. PRESIDENT TRUMP IS GOING TO BE THE BEST PRESIDENT EVER. O.K. SUCK IT UP – SHUT IT UP.

To all who are upset about the “profanity” that you see on the sign in the photo, please remember who first brought the “P” word into public discourse as he boasted about sexual assault. The millions of women around the world who marched last weekend wearing their pink beanies were trying to reclaim the word and highlight discrimination.

Ignorance running rampant!! Do you people not understand that women, men and children AROUND THE ENTIRE WORLD, were participating in the March on Jan 21st were doing so to promote the fact that women deserve EQUAL RIGHTS, that minorities and the LGBT community DESERVE EQUAL RIGHTS and that education is important etc etc? Yes, us women in Cayman and the US are generally better off than women in other countries, but the fact is that this new administration is taking our basic rights into their hands– why is it that these MEN can decide what’s best for our bodies and that it’s totally acceptable to tax my basic sanitary needs? And why does a man doing the same exact job as me get paid more? In the US, men are paid 20% more than women. Does that seem fair? No, it’s not. It’s 2017, that is just not acceptable. But there’s no sense trying to educate you now– you miss the point of the March entirely!

I have no issues with someone wanting to express their opinion peacefully but unfortunately my experience has been that there is no discussion to be had with liberals. It either is their way or the highway and they love to shift blame elsewhere.

All you need to do in this day and age is to call someone a racist or a sexist. There is no proof required – you just have to shout out the accusation. After America had an African American president who was voted in not only once, but twice, everyone is now suddenly a racist again because they didn’t support the liberal candidate. Crazy!

  14. Rob says:

This is how liberals respond to not being in power anymore. As tolerant as they claim to be, the truth is they are the most intolerant set of people you’ll find. Disagree with them and watch their negative overreaction. I’m glad that their dictative reign is over.

  15. Richard Wadd says:

I have no issue with peaceful protest, demonstrations or showing solidarity and support for a cause … after all, we all share the same home, planet earth.

Chances are they cant even vote in Cayman but are just rabble rouser trouble makers. Count on it – President Trump is making America great again. Protesting what? Women in the US and Cayman have it made. You have more rights than men in my opinion so shut up and go to Syria if you want to protest for women’s rights.

        • Anonymous says:

          Exactly!

        • Anonymous says:

exactly, women now have more rights then men. Right to work, right to pretty much get chosen over everything. Even the law sides with women. So what are they unequal in? the old “wage” debate. That is so easily debunked. Women will as a majority go into low wage professions.

So what is it, women are really protesting about? oh, ya…..it’s to protest because their lives are on easy mode and they want more.

it’s not about equality any longer. It’s about superiority. The more you complain, the more you get. They can always find “Something” that is not above equal to protest about to make it an advantage.

Please don’t ask me to cite proof, because that’s entirely too easy in all facets of women’s lives.

The ONLY thing women can complain about, and it’s a fact. Is domestic abuse in the home. But marry better men, and that goes away too. It’s all about choices. And ladies, you have been granted the power over your lives a long time ago.

Think we have these seminars for men? or the women? I can count on my hands how many times i have been slapped on the posterior at work. Think a guy is going to take that to HR. No, he would not be taken that seriously unless he reports it many times over. And it’s a reoccurring theme with someone. So most men will let it slide. But look at a women sideways and she doesn’t like it. Guess what, HR you go. And under no certain circumstances, they will say “we take this very seriously”.

But you women don’t want that do you, because you can’t push your none sense agenda and idiotic belief that women are not equal.

I think more and more men should put feminists in their place and disband your marches.

Additionally, the many times you speak of “”you women” makes it clear that you are not one. Why do you feel the need to lie about your gender? Do you believe that that would give your discriminatory and hateful opinion more validity?

                    • Anonymous says:

so instead of tackling my points, i see two posters, do the usual feminist thing, when confronted with facts they cannot refute. Move the goal posts and redirect the argument to attack the person making the points.

So most feminists, when you can prove that they have protested their way into a superior position and not an equal position. Either will attack you. As you can see the poster that says she hopes i am not married. Or this poster above who tries to determine my gender.

Does it matter if i am married or what my gender is. Argue the facts i put up.

But you can’t, because if you dig deep enough with a fair mind set. Everything I said is true. Funny how women mention the 70% pay gap, but never mention that men pay 200% more taxes than women. That’s almost 3 times more than 70%. But hell. It doesn’t benefit women to argue that or bring that to light.

So, lets hear how I am wrong……

But lets base this supposed inequality of women vs men on this incident.

    • Graig says:

Way to yell from your high horses while remaining anonymous.

Do you think it’s possible that some people who protested (for the sake of alternative facts, let’s say ALL the people protesting in Cayman) are American citizens who did vote and are on vacation so could not attend protests in their home states or cities?

That’s only a completely logical possibility.

Protesters recognize Trump won the election. These are not protests about winning, they are protests about making sure democracy works the way it is intended. That it is not a winner take all. In this case, a winner take all destruction of the United States.
These protests are about making sure that the country’s preferences are heard, which by the way, real fact here, Trump did not win the popular vote, but won the electoral college system the US uses. So, YES he is president, but NO his policies, and yours if you are a Trump supporter, are not the preferred policies of a majority of those who did go out and vote.

If you took any time to inform yourselves, you would know there were protests like crazy against Obama. In fact, Trump led a national movement to discredit Obama over his birth certificate. Death threats were made against Obama and his family after he won. There were protests constantly throughout the US against Obama. How quickly we forget the past.

It scares me the lack of reality so many people live in. The three previous comments certainly show that living in an alternate universe with alternative facts leads to one place —- dangerous, single-track thinking that gets everyone – that includes Trumpettes – in trouble.

Well Graig I am a supporter of Mr. Trump and recognize he now is the President. You liberals do not even want to give him and his team a chance but oh if old crooked Hillary got in; bet you would be happy and dancing. Truth is he is the President like it or lump it! Make America great again!

      • Anonymous says:

Graig it must be nice for you to know what is in the protesters minds and to know what exactly they are protesting.
It must be a great confidence to be so knowledgeable about the election process and to know the 3,000,000 vote election margin Hillary enjoyed over Trump came from California.
If you believe that Obama suffered the same levels of attacks showered upon Trump you need to get your news information elsewhere. In my 60+ years as a voter I have never experienced the level of attack on a candidate as was leveled upon Trump. Hillary, Obama, DNC and main stream media not only tried to discredit but to destroy Trump and even went after his family including children.
It really upset these forces when the American voters ignored all that liberal wisdom.
No liberals believe that it is patriotic to hope Trump fails. The vile attacks and those who support them hurt America.

Don’t you think that it is a bit ironic that the US election system has been in existence for donkey years but only now it is an issue? In my experience, those people who truly care and are passionate about an issue don’t work on it only when things don’t go their way.

      • Diogenes says:

Your view that Trumps policies are not the policies of the majority surely sits uncomfortably alongside the fact that Republicans also control both houses. The fact that the majority of American voters now espoused right wing policies that you disagree with may be uncomfortable, but it’s not as if America has switched to tyranny. Trump is subject to the checks and balances of the Hill. Of course, a little harder for you to argue that the election of 2 separate political bodies that don’t agree with your personal views is an outrage to democracy. Things is, in most democratic systems the party that wins gets to make policy irrespective of the wishes of the minority. That’s the way it works.

        • Anonymous says:

Note though, that the general Presidential election is often the best indicator of the total voting preferences of the US by means of the popular vote count. Majority held seats in the House and Senate are not necessarily indicators of the majority of voter preferences. For example, in the House, votes are by district so things like gerrymandering come into effect such that the proportion of elected officials for a party might not be representative of the overall distribution of that party’s support for any particular state, let alone the country. As for the Senate, note as well that in that instance the vote is counted by state, which will not take into effect differences in population between states. The combined effect is that, without even beginning to consider policies to suppress eligible voters, the actual makeup of Congress is not necessarily indicative of the overall preference of the US.
It was obviously designed in this manner (again, ignoring actions like gerrymandering) to attempt to balance against urban interests, where populations are highly concentrated, as well as “large state” interests to protect the interests of minority viewpoints. However, the flaws in the design can allow for significant misrepresentation of a state’s, or the entire country’s voting preferences, so it’s not really a good example to cite in claiming the US somehow holds a majority Republican outlook from a voting perspective. In this case, it is far more likely that a minority opinion is holding majority power, with little opportunity for any checks or balances to be enacted until at least 2018, and more likely 2020.

I agree, Mr. Anonymous 4:42. Just a bunch of lost sheep!.

  18. Just tell the truth, that is all. says:

Everyone in the USA had a chance to vote. The vote was taken and Donald Trump was judged to be the winner after Obama ridiculed any suggestion that the vote would be rigged.

    The same for Brexit.

I do not remember anyone holding such virulent protests after Obama was elected and yet he was the President who voted for abortion of babies up to 8 months.

So I would suggest that the hypocrites in Cayman suck it up and exercise their right to vote in the next election. And while you are at it, stop indoctrinating your innocent children. If they knew half of what you got up to, you would be ashamed to face them.

1 . The abortion time limit was set years before President Obama by the US Supreme Court. .. see Roebuck vs Wade ruling. 2. President Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million but received the electoral vote. 3. Many Americans view him as illegitimate due to Russia meddling.

      • Just tell the truth, that is all. says:

Fake news has not proven any “Russian Meddling” and you are mistaken about the popular vote. Especially in California and other states, no proof of citizenship is required to vote.
You appear to be an enemy of Democracy.
Did you get your pussy hat?

        • Anonymous says:

What about the CIA’s analysis? What about the FBI’s? Are they both “fake news”? FFS, even Trump admitted it! Extraordinary comment.

          • Jotnar says:

They didnt interfere in the voting process – just made public emails that the Democrats would have preferred be kept from the voters. Interesting viewpoint – that increased transparency is apparently anti democratic (although clearly anti Democratic). If you are going to take that line, start complaining about the media’s interference in the election.

Show me an election round the world that the US hasn’t meddled in. As ever, they can give it but can’t take it.

      • Anonymous says:

Sounds like a bunch of sore losers to me. Instead of trying to work together it seems like you all want to do is stir up trouble and anarchy. Like little babies who can not get there own way. President Trump won and is now the leader of the USA. What do you think Obama is going to come in and take over again?
What kind of example are you setting for these children that you are dragging to these type of events? Get a life.

      • Anonymous says:

        4. electoral vote > popular vote so your point 2 is pointless.

      • Anonymous says:

what russia meddling? That is media spin. No where did they prove that russia was behind anything. And lets just say for arguments sake your right. What did they do. Oh that’s right. They exposed hillary clinton taking campaign contributions from saudi arabia. Among many many many other things that should have her behind bars. Guess what. That act right there made her ineligible to run for president. Says so in the US laws. No presidential candidate can take or accept foreign campaign contributions. But because they threw bernie under the bus. They were stuck wtih crooked hillary. If you really looked at all the facts. Trump might not be ideal. But hillary was absolutely the last choice.

Don’t try to bring up facts and then put hillary’s name in the argument. Because hillary has done to many illegal things, it made her ineligible many times over to run.

Classified emails? Hillary said on national tv, to the audience member she directed the answer to, that she did not know they were classified. The wiki leaks emails (this is hillarys emails directly from her server) showed she said months before that testimony, to her staffers, to strip the classified warnings off the emails so she could send them to colleagues.

I could write an entire PAGE of illegal things she did. She was unfit, she lost. The end. You can’t bag on trump cause he’s a meanie pants. Wait 6 months when he’s in the job, then make your decision.

Like everyone else, you have no idea what the truth is and what it isn’t. You study the Internet in your darkened room and choose what you want to believe. You might be right or wrong. You haven’t a clue.

          • Anonymous says:

I don’t need any clues. There is hard evidence in those emails. Which were challenged and were proved to have the correct hashes on the emails to prove they came from hillary’s server. They were not doctored and fabricated.

This is what the main stream media did not want to report. Clinton new network (CNN) and the rest were behind Hillary. The harder they tried to suppress this news and create fake news or tried to divert attention to these emails. The more people who were motivated to know, went online and saw these emails for themselves.

It showed hillary money laundering through her campaign. This is where she accepted the foreign contributions.
It showed her selling secrets to the chinese
it showed her selling her “personal access” in a pay to play scheme.
It showed her funding weapons to isis
it showed her selling uranium to russia.
it showed her in collusion with all the major media outlets.

And there is a whole lot more.

If the media had not protected Hillary from this one particular scandal. You would all be appalled at this woman. But because most of you can’t bother to do any research at all. You believe the main stream media stories, hook line and sinker.

Please. “i dont’ have a clue”. I think your reading your post to yourself in the mirror

Revisionist history at its finest. The GOP spent the past 8 years protesting. Get over yourself. “Alternative Facts” for everyone!!!

Over 72 Million Americans voted against Donald Trump!

      • Anonymous says:

Well those card carrying liberals lost. Now our President is establishing jobs for the American people, bringing back respect for law & order and going to secure the borders. So what is wrong with that? You blow bags need to grow up. Like President Trump said – America first. The politicians around here better catch on and get Caymanians first and quit selling out to anybody who flies in and throws around some money. If it is so bad I am sure one of those socialist countries will take you all in; problem will be lets see how long you will last once you run your gums to them! Lets make Cayman & America great again!

  19. Anonymous says:

If they don’t like the result why aren’t they back in the USA protesting? This is nothing to do with the Cayman Islands.

    • Madeleine Rowell says:

Hi Anonymous, I’m actually a born Caymanian who took part in the protest and I do not have American citizenship so protesting in the US would’ve been impossible for me. I think that the US has a lot of influence on other countries including the Cayman Islands; for example, Trump signed a bill yesterday banning international health groups receiving US funding from promoting abortion as a family care plan. On the other hand, I do think that Cayman is far behind the US when it comes to human rights issues (eg abortion is still illegal here) and so it’s disappointing that protests like this haven’t happened often prior to this weekend (minus the LGBTQ protest that happened last year), but better late than never right?

      • Anonymous says:

Why would protesting in the US have been impossible for you? Is it illegal for non Americans to protest in America? Of course not.

        • Madeleine Rowell says:

Hi Anonymous, unfortunately I did not have the financial means to travel to the US just for a protest and also did not think it necessary since there are many causes here to protest for. Also, the US was blocking Canadian citizens from traveling to the US for the march on Saturday so it very well may have been impossible if I had tried.

      • Anonymous says:

You do know that abortion is murder. This is the one thing I agree with Trump on. Marching for the right to murder babies. A bloody disgrace. ( no pun intended) so sad and cruel.

        • Madeleine Rowell says:

Hi Anonymous, I don’t think abortion is murder. However, I know that many people feel that way so I ask you to consider this: abortions will always happen regardless of whether they’re legal or not, and have for centuries. However, what happens is that if abortion is illegal, people source them illegally (or try to do it themselves) which is very dangerous. These botched abortions result in many injuries/deaths. Thus, the legalization of abortion is actually a public health issue. Making abortion illegal doesn’t stop abortion from happening; however, legalizing abortion could prevent many deaths. Also, if you are anti-abortion I would ask you to pressure our government to make comprehensive sex education and contraception more readily accessible since both prevent unwanted pregnancy.

          • Anonymous says:

Legalising abortions is killing unborn babies. If you don’t want to have a child take precautions or abstain. If a mother dies from abortion she brings it on herself. If a baby is murdered through abortion call it what it is -. Murder. No government should be funding murder, any way you turn it it is wrong.

            • Anonymous says:

Agreed as the persons making the baby are well aware of there actions. This is just a cop out to live the free and easy life style and not be accountable for your actions. Well Ms. Rowell you need to find something else to do your protests about as there are no legal abortions here in Cayman.

      • Jotnar says:

So you would rather protest against a foreign head of state refusing to fund NGOs who advocate abortion, then protest against your own government who make it illegal? Interesting choice of priorities.

        • Madeleine Rowell says:

Hi Jotnar. That’s a valid point, but I was actually protesting causes important for me in Cayman, e.g. reproductive rights and LGBTQ rights. I also continued my own protest after the event above ended. Personally, I was protesting for human rights in Cayman, but I can’t speak for anyone else and agree we should have been focusing on issues here. I also plan on continuing my advocacy and activism after this event and have advocated for similar issues in the past in Cayman.
