Students stir up a baker’s dozen more voters at GT bar

(CNS): A group of students from the International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) held a voter registration drive at a George Town bar on Friday night and persuaded 13 young people to join the electoral roll. The event was held at The Office and organised by five students from the college’s public speaking class. Elections Supervisor Wesley Howell said peer-to-peer communication was an effective way of sharing the message about seizing the opportunity to vote.

“The ICCI public speaking students demonstrated how well peer-to-peer communication works when they effectively communicated the value of voter registration and voting to their peers last Friday evening, when they signed up 13 potential new voters. Well done team ICCI; we are very grateful for your efforts,” he said. “Remember, unless you register, you cannot vote in May 2017. So be sure to register before the last date,” Howell said. “Your vote counts. Register to vote.”

The students participating in the drive were Nadia Martinez, Lisbeth Gratereaux, Justin Ebanks, Doran Kelly and Jamie Lee Wood.

The voter registration deadline is midnight on 16 January 2017.

    Slow news day?

I’m not voting unless they can give me a nice compensation package like putting a road through my house so I can get a new one paid for by the tax payers. Money well spent compared to the bullshit in the past

It shouldn’t be that hard for someone in the elections office to check who has gained status over the last number of years and ensure that they are registered. It is nonsense that people have to go to Government with a certificate that was issued by that same entity to prove that they are eligible. Why not be proactive and check at their end to avoid the necessity after the fact of checking?

hope they had the valid identification on them for eg Wouldn’t a young person who turns 18 by May 24 and whose parents have status would also have to first gain status in their own right to be Caymanian? Did they check on validity of status which may be lost via divorce?

13 more naive voters that believe they can make a difference.
    Politicians are per definition corrupt.
Dont vote, stay home. It wont make a difference anyway.

We already have enough voters, what we have is a dearth of good candidates. Could they possibly identify a few of those while they are out searching?

If the current expense per enlistment rate is $1500/voter (or thereabouts), elections office should cut them a cheque, or at least pick up the bar tab.

Very well done to all concerned.
