(CNS): The 2017 General Election date has been confirmed as Wednesday, 24 May 2017, and the Elections Office has extended the registration deadline for eligible people to make the list to be able to vote. Governor Helen Kilpatrick signed off on next year’s election programme Friday, making polling day a public holiday as well. The voter registration deadline has been extended until midnight Sunday, 16 January.

Elections Supervisor Wesley Howell urged those eligible to register not to wait until the last minute.

“Remember, if you have not registered, you cannot vote,” he advised potential voters. “We have a number of avenues open for persons to register. They can go online or call or come into our office on Smith Road or talk to their Registration Officer to find out the documentation needed to register”

Sounds like you took citizenship in the wrong country. Seeing how you won’t vote……well, you’ll figure something out.

Why oh why can’t non-voters be allowed to get drunk on election day? In fact, given the quality of candidates, why can’t voters get drunk too, too ease the pain?

If you weren’t so drunk, you could figure out how to buy your brain-melt the day before. Ask a friend for help.

I think legalizing the herb for May 24, 2017 is a better option. Do you agree? We can call it Bob Marley day as they do in Miami.

9:53 you are so ungreatful….did you really just log on here to complain. This is paradise and you know. It is because of CIG why you are on this paradise island, why you are able to work, Why you are able to drive and why you sleep peacefully every night. Now get a life.

I am a New Caymanian and have the right to vote in the 2017 Elections if I so wish, but am reluctant to register to vote for the following reasons:
    (1) privacy and safety concerns: On the Cayman Elections portal, registered voters are listed by district, name and home address. The fact that my home address will be published makes me extremely uncomfortable.
    (2) jury duty and safety concerns: Whilst I understand and agree that it is one’s civic duty to serve as juror when called upon, I would be uncomfortable to act on a jury in such a small society where my safety cannot be guaranteed should there ever be a backlash from a defendant for revenge reasons.
    (3) limited number of eligible candidates: I believe that my kind (i.e. Cayman Status holders) are not eligible to run for office. I am not interested in the same career politicians as candidates, and not just from the small pool of “born and bred” Caymanians either. I would like to see new blood and new talent being infused into public service from the Caymanian voting pool, regardless of place of birth.

Very valid concerns, but unlikely to be addressed …..regrettably.

Who gives a flying F what you think or what your opinion is? Posting on CNS don’t change a thing.
      Your civic mindedness is notable.
Just continue to be a citizen of the Cayman Islands and enjoy the benefits of that status……… we are probably better off with you off the voters list anyway.

Indeed, no one really cares a flying F what anyone thinks, right? That’s a very clever rebuttable to someone’s genuine concerns. Let’s rather throw the insults and punches than address the concerns of a fellow Caymanian.

      1) I think the voters role in most conutry contains the voters address. Some conutry have these on the internet. How else would you know who the voter is?
      2) Persons can be called for jury duty from the General Registry. So not wanting your name on the Voters Registry is BS. Most court cases are simple non-violent issues.
      3) As a multi-generational Caymanian, I agree that persons who are granted citizenship via the Immigration law should be allowed to hold office, say 10 years after the grant. Therefore about 20 years after settling in the country. Not voting would seem to mean that you are not interested in the fate of your adopted country. Please reconsider.

Like who cares about CiG they don’t do anything

9:53 am…you come across as a really mean spirited individual. Do you suck lemons all day or something?

Lazy workers are everywhere. Not all CIG employees are slack, just like all workers in the private sector are not competent.

Admittedly CIG need to step up more and fire the slack employees but take it from me… many Civil Servants are honest, competent and hardworking individuals pulling more than their weight.
