Armed police taser drunken suspect in fight

(CNS): A 44-year-old man received a head injury after police fired a Taser gun at him during an altercation outside a nightclub in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police said the man hit his head when he fell after officers deployed the stun-gun because he resisted arrest and fought with police. The incident happened outside Lillie’s in The Strand at around 1am. Armed officers had issued a ticket to the man for parking in a disabled spot and the situation escalated, police said.

In a release Tuesday, the RCIPS said the armed officers were on patrol nearby when they were told by a member of the public about the car being illegally parked by the nightclub. After trying but failing to find the car’s owner, the officers placed a ticket on the windscreen, but as they started to leave, the officers said, they saw a man go to the car, remove the ticket and place it on another nearby vehicle.

According to the release, the officers went back to the car and spoke to the man, who was getting into the driver’s side. The police said his “slurred speech and breath indicated he was intoxicated”.

The officers asked for the man’s keys to prevent him from driving but he refused to hand them over and became aggressive, arguing with the officers and then attacking one of them. The RCIPS said the man put his hands around one officer’s neck and a struggle ensued, with the man wrestling the armed officer for control of his Taser.

At this point a second officer deployed his Taser, police stated, and the man fell backwards. The police alerted the emergency services as they continue to try and contain the situation and calm the man, who, they claimed, continued to be aggressive. Despite being tasered and having a head injury, he hit one of the police officers in the face before the ambulance arrived.

The RCIPS stated that “due to his aggressive demeanour the ambulance could not transport the man”, so police took him to hospital where he was treated for a minor head wound and later released. The police officer who was hit during the altercation was also treated at hospital for a split lip and minor injuries.

“This incident demonstrates the kind of unexpected aggression officers sometimes encounter, most often on weekend nights outside liquor-licensed establishments, while just ensuring basic public safety,” said Derek Byrne, the new police commissioner, as he urged owners of bars and clubs to take more responsibility for how drunk their customers get.

“We have concerns about officer safety while responding to these kinds of incidents, and we ask liquor-licensed establishments to be more aware of the level of intoxication among their patrons. Anyone who is clearly intoxicated should not continue to be served,” the commissioner added.

The man, who is from George Town, was arrested for assaulting police, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct at a licensed premises but he has since been bailed.

To the individual who made the comment about officers needing a bigger Taser gun? First of all did you do your research on these Taser guns and how many innocent lives were taken by it? Do you think being Taser is a joke??? Taser gun kills, and it is worse if you already have a very bad heart. Can you imagine all of those volts going through your helpless body? Why you won’t try being tased and see how it feels? These dangerous weapons should definitely be banned from Cayman and newer tactics should be enforced.

It is the antisocial idiots who need teasers to control them, that should be banned.

I stopped reading after the first paragraph. He parked in a handicap spot, he argued with police and he resisted arrest. Sorry, but three strikes and you are out. If people don’t understand what the consequences are for carrying on that way, well then they have to feel.

Mr Commissioner, are you sure those officers are telling the truth? I can remember three of your prestigious officers found guilty of assault and using excessive force recently. Also, remember those same officers lied about their conduct in court.

Anonymous at 7:39am, you will be the same one calling for their assistance if your house is being broken into or any other crime committed against you. Give me a break, you cant have it both ways.

“You can’t have it both ways” What do you mean by that? I want 1. A police service that will respond to a call that my house is broken into and 2. A police service that refrains from illegally assaulting members of the public. Why can’t we “have it both ways”?

Just recognize for a minute that not all incidents, or officers, are the same. The officers who got convicted deserved to be, from everything that I’ve read (which is enough). In this case this drunken idiot deserved what he got. An aggressive moron, parking in handicapped parking, mouthing off to the cops – we all know the type. You can “have it both ways” if you recognize that there are good cops and there are not-so-good ones – just like everywhere and everything else – and you need to withhold judgment and give each person, or cop, a chance, before throwing them all in the same category. From the sound of it these officers behaved reasonably in a tense situation. And how many of us would do their job and deal with this idiot?

Are you sick in the head? Are you the drunken man trying to justify your actions? Are you one of his family members trying to make him look good?

      YOUR comment is sickening. Troll!!

“due to his aggressive demeanor the ambulance could not transport the man”
