Submerged car being hauled from canal, 31 Oct 2016

(CNS) UPDATED 2 Nov: Police have now confirmed that the woman killed when her car plunged into canal in Prospect, Monday, was Audrey Nugent (53) from George Town. Police are investigating the circumstances leading to Nugent’s death but they had stated that they do not suspect foul play.

The RCIPS Traffic Management Unit and the Cayman Islands Fire Service were  sent to the scene Monday at around 10am following a 911 call reporting that a vehicle had gone into a canal off Marina Drive and that it was sinking. When emergency personnel arrived at the scene near Harbour House Marine, a police officer and two firefighters got in the water in an effort to try to rescue whoever was in the car.

The RCIPS said that although the divers were able to get the woman from the car, the victim already appeared lifeless as a result of her injuries. She was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital but she was pronounced dead shortly after.

The silver BMW car, which had sustained a smashed back window and windshield as well as other damage, has since been removed from the canal for further examination.

My soul is weighed down in sorrow for my best friend is no longer here. All our future dreams and plans I must carry on in your memory. No more smiles, no more jokes, your laughter is now still.

You have changed locations…I can not go to you and you cannot come to me. Memories are all I have now.

You were a God given friend…We choose to be sisters…there was a bond that held us together. We were there for each other as we faced unbearable circumstances. You were a second daughter to my mother. Your flight has taken a hard toll on her emotionally, and physically. We try to come to terms with this tradegy. It is hard especially early in the morning. You would come and bang on my window. We including mom would go to the beach …I would watch you as you swam out in the ocean…with Candy your dog. After our swim we would go to Kirk’s supermarket and purchase our breakfast.

Audrey will always be remembered by the Dixon, Roy, Parsons, and many more in B. Town – she was an inspiration and friend to our families. Stayed at my home from January-May, 2016 an early morning person, with excellent debates and large stories over a cup of coffee until she was ready for work. Audy, your hammock is still waiting for you!!! unable to come to grips with your loss and receiving your phone calls on Friday and Sunday, one day before your tragic circumstances RIP my dear friend we will miss you.

If you cannot swim you find someone who can! Calling 911 helps, but our forefathers would never have waited for the authorities to arrive!

I hope that the person(s) who called 911 attempted to assist the driver rather than just wait for the emergency services.
