Premier releases very short message on Trump

| 09/11/2016 | 120 Comments

(CNS): The Cayman Islands premier’s office released a 56-word statement Wednesday congratulating US President Elect Donald Trump. As Cayman and countries all over the world were considering the implications of Trump’s unexpected election win, Premier Alden McLaughlin joined international leaders in releasing public comment. But in possibly the shortest statement from him on any topic since taking office more than three and a half years ago, McLaughlin’s comments were succinct.

“The Cayman Islands congratulates Donald Trump and the Republican Party on an emphatic victory in yesterday’s presidential election,” he said. “We will watch with interest as Mr Trump organises his Cabinet and sets his policies as well as his agenda for the next four years and look forward to a positive working relationship with the new US administration.”

The first political party leader (though not a country leader) to congratulate Trump on his victory, even before it was a certainty, was Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s far-right Front National who is running for president next spring. Her best wishes were followed by an assortment of congratulatory messages and tweets from a collection of right wing European political party and country leaders.

The French president was a little less enthusiastic about Trump’s victory than Le Pen, however, saying it “opens a period of uncertainty”. Speaking in a televised address, he called for a united Europe, able to wield influence on the international stage and promote its values and interests whenever they are challenged.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who had criticized Trump during the campaign about some of his outlandish racist comments, focused on the “special relationship” between the two countries. She said that she hoped that Trump’s win would mean a continuation of shared values, including “freedom, democracy and enterprise”.

An early congratulatory message came from the man who may be high on Trump’s Christmas card list this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said he was willing fully to restore ties with the US.

“We heard the campaign statements of the future US presidential candidate about the restoration of relations between Russia and the United States,” he said in his statement. “It is not an easy path, but we are ready to do our part and do everything to return Russian and American relations to a stable path of development.”

There were mixed messages from leaders in China, Iran and the European Union, as well as from the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, contrasting with far more enthusiastic messages from leaders in other countries, such as Israel.

Not surprisingly, Mexico’s Enrique Pena Nieto opted to congratulate America for “its electoral process” rather than congratulating Trump. Nieto said he hoped the two countries will work together but made no mention of the wall that Trump promised will be built between their two countries, paid for by Mexico, to keep out illegal immigrants.

Personally I’m loving it. Lots of educated people agree with Trump. Lots of uneducated people voted for Hillary. One of the best parts is watching the European panic attacks and cardiac arrests. People who think that only people making over 100,000 have any sense had better make sure that 51% of the population earns that much. Letting the majority get screwed by “globalization” is going to have the same result wherever it occurs.

What really happened is that those who voted for Trump did so so Hillary won’t get elected and vice verse.
America was under all kind of presidents, from dimwitted to the smart ones. The country and its people survived them all.

Oh but the elites are rattle eh. Can’t always have your way! Tek Wood you elitest ass#%&@$. Donald Trump is unnah match no matter how it goes down! Nothing like one of your own taking you down a notch or two?

Probably the greatest thing about living in a democracy is that it gives people the representation they deserve. That holds true whether you love or hate your representative. If you are happy with your representative then sit back and enjoy him/her. If you are unhappy with your representative then obviously you didn’t care enough and do enough to ensure that a better person was elected.

The issue was never Trump or Clinton. It was all about the system which is broken for sure. And it was the same in the UK with Brexit. And whilst in my own view, Trump is not the answer, the things he said made people think he could be the answer. The reality I fear is that he will line his and those likes his pockets even more, whilst destroying healthcare for those that cant afford it and reducing social security, and for sure carrying on the frequent practice of either not raising salaries or reducing them by outsourcing to cheaper countries. Most people have had enough, and they are starting to say so. I am no radical, but I get it and the leaders better get it too. If Trump does what I think he will, you will have civil war in the US at some point.

4:21 pm: “The things he said made people think he was the answer.” Must not have been listening to the same Trump I was listening to.

“..destroying healthcare for those that cant afford it..”
There was never a healthcare in America, sickcare, yes, but not healthcare. All Obamacare accomplished was to force everyone to have health insurance. Health insurance is not healthcare. Paying 600/mo with $10,000 deductibles doesn’t get you any closer to healthcare. Zero attention was given to prevention. Health care starts with prevention.
So Obamacare is really is Healthinsurance care. People still pay $800 out of pocket for a saline IV treatment that costs $10 and unable to get vitamin B12 shots, which would literally cure half of the people with neurological conditions and dementia.

Educated Americans and Britons have seen in 2016 the horror of how easily poorly educated blue collar workers can be whipped up into an angry frenzy to support idiotic policies and unqualified politicians. Cayman has been voting like that for decades.

Yes, but you did not decided the election. The angry poorly educated blue collar workers that voted Republican out of stupidity and resentment decided the election. Despite your many degrees from goodness knows where, you seem to have not grasp of the concept of statistics or psephology.

        • Jotnar says:

Except that according to exit polls Trump tied Clinton on college graduates overall. And despite the other popular beliefs – that Trump supporters are older, or men, when you look at the divisions by any demographic coupled with race, you see the difference. Trump outscores Hillary on under 29 whites 48:43, and white women 53:43. Sure, angry poorly educated white people voted Trump, but a hell of a lot of well educated and doubtless well off Americans also voted for him – and it seems unlikely they were voting based on stupidity and resentment. Anger at the political system, perhaps; self interest; perhaps, even racist, perhaps, but blaming one particular niche of the electorate because you don’t like the outcome and feel you can label them as stupid and resentful because they don’t have the advantages afforded by a college education is simplistic and unfair.

        • Fed Up says:

Do you have any idea how prejudice and ignorant you sound talking about stats with no factual support. My husband is “blue collar” and is in no way angry or uneducated (2 degrees and loves his job and prefers not to work in a stuffy office) and neither are his co-workers. Also, many educated and wealthy folks voted for Trump because they are are Republicans and they are sick of liberals. Bottom line. Putting people in neat little boxes and judging and stereotyping them is the same crap people are hating on Trump for yet they (you) are doing it just as bad. Hypocritical, judgmental and plain wrong is what you are. It’s people with your mentality that make me happy to be married to a truly kind and compassionate and educated “blue collar” person because I would never want to be in the same category as someone as rude and arrogant as you.

      • Anonymous says:

Annie, not everyone is born privaliged and when I say that, I dont mean born with loads of money, I mean born to good caring parents, a stable home life and good role models in life. The lazy people you speak of have not had the same life experinces and influences as you. They have learned to be lazy from their parents and the cycle continues. A country is only as good as how it treats it’s most weakest people in its society. Capitalism is the root of all evil and it does not bring true happiness to anyone. It focuses on materialism which has nothing to do with love, empathy and compassion. I would much rather be friends with a poor compassionate person than with someone who is rich but doesn’t know how to truely connect to anyone on a human level.
So Annie, i would like you to try and curb your judgemental ways and think about those who are not as privalidged as you. Yes it can be frustrating when you see perfectly healthy young people out of work, but those people can be found in all societies and it is our duty as a humans to care for our weakest members because in another life it could have been us. If we were born to different parents it could have quite easily have been us. So why dont you use your degrees to go out and help others, educate them, motivate and encourage them. I would rather have a society with loads of lazy socilaist scroungers than a load of racist, facist, sexist xenophobic Trumps. At least the lazy scroungers don’t know any better! You do because in your own words you are educated.

Better Trump than some elitist-driven pawn with know spine. Clinton is a career politician, the only step left for her WAS the presidency; getting it would have just secured the last “tick” on her bucket list, then she would have handed over duties to an army of “advisers” to run the country as she continued spewing recited and memorized speeches for four years.

    • Trump is dangerous says:

Hillary Clinton has no spine???? Good God! Have you been watching the news for the last year? Saying that about anyone running to be the president is insane – and yes, I would include Trump. Of all the negatives that I could use, I would never say that he has no spine.

  7. Sharkey says:

Dear, Trump is dangerous . Did you know that the dishonest / corrupt / bias media gave Hillary questions during the last presidential debate ? Did you know that the same media destroyed Republican and Democrats presidential candidates in the past ? So when that same media don’t like you or not in their fold , they would destroy you if you sit down and let them do it.

Mr. Donald J Trump didn’t let them do it.

    • Trump is dangerous says:

You: Did you know that the dishonest / corrupt / bias media gave Hillary questions during the last presidential debate?
Me: There are lots of things wrong with the US television media. One of them is the habit of having a bunch of political pundits yelling at each other and calling it news. For one thing it’s really boring and another you just hear the same talking points over and over without learning anything. The person (yes a person, not “the media”) who shared the questions was Donna Brazile, chair of the DNC. She should never have been put in that position of quasi-journalist. I think most people of both sides of the political spectrum are agreed on that. CNN did not give her the questions and fired her as soon as they found out, FYI.

As to the rest of your comment, I’m not really sure where you are going with this. Michael Dukakis in his tank perhaps? Howard Dean’s scream? When I think of destroying politicians’ campaigns, I think especially of the swiftboating of John Kerry, a disgraceful episode that produced a whole new term. The whole thing was created and pushed by a superpac called “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth”, a totally manipulated “news” item.

Did Trump outsmart the media? Or is it just that social media has made people hardened, blind and deaf to the awful insults and language that Trump thrived on all the way through the elections? You can now say nasty terrible things about people and it’s just funny. Sickening really.

What is needed, especially in broadcast media, is more seriousness, more in depth investigation. But sadly they have to appeal to people who think Trump tweets the truth and have the same ability to absorb information as goldfish.

      • Sharkey says:

Dear , Trump is dangerous . I know that Donna Brazil was the one that gave Hillary the question, but where did Donna get the question from ? Not from the DNC , Then it would have to be from the CNN ” Moderator ” that is where and who has those questions before they are asked to the 2 Presidential candidate . Of course CNN would have to fired Donna there then to save their own face in this disgraceful act .

CNS: I’m going to butt in here. It’s been fairly well reported that the guilty party was guest moderator Roland Martin from TV One, which was partnering with CNN for that particular event. There is no evidence at all that anyone from CNN had anything to do with it.

        • Sharkey says:

CNS : Like I said before the dishonest Media was out to destroy Mr. Trump . Why did CNN let Roland Martin come in as guest moderator ? Is it because CNN didn’t have anyone good enough to moderate the Debate , or what ?
When Mr. Chris Wallace did the FOX NEWS DEBATE he didn’t need any guest help, which was a fair and balanced debate with no complaints , and no corruption scandal, and higher ratings I think.

Let’s all have a little patience and wait maybe Mr. Trump would surprise and help us all . We have 4 years to see .

    • Anonymous says:

Sharkey, instead of these generalisations, get the facts. Donna Brazille, the deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee, while she was serving as a CNN contributor unfortunately had access to two questions and leaked those to the Clinton campaign. If you are in the midst of a media house u might overhear conversations, etc. That she leaked the two questions came out in the email dump and CNN severed ties with her.

media houses use these political operatives because they have intimate insider knowledge. The downside is these unfortunate compromising consequences. Perhaps media houses should avoid having these types so close to them, but Donna Brazille should by no means be classed as a journalist (media).

Further, those were the only two instances that came to light. It is sad that a woman of Ms Brazille’s stature (she has quite an impressive resume) should have felt moved to leak the questions, but 1. She was not doing so in the capacity of a CNN journalist by any definition, and 2. There was no need to do so — Hilary obviously did not need the help.

By the way Sharkey, you obviously did not watch Lying Trump during the campaign. trump was not excoriated enough by the media. That may have occurred because he was so consistently outrageous that after a while media appeared to be immune to his diatribe.

Sadly, media did not do their job well enough and voters stayed home. Hence we end up with this man so obviously unfit for the presidency.

We can only hope this will not turn out to be the disaster it could become.

Fortunately, the US goverment has well established checks and balances and we can pray that he does no harm.

USA is clearly politically unstable at the moment…whilst the funds (profits) will be sent home I think more entities and “insurance policies” e.g. condos will be selling.

Cayman needs to increase Caymanian land ownership and at the same time sell more insurance read Condos (e.g. residency without rights to work in Cayman)

Hey, and if you take the annual PR fee and pay that over to Caymanian’s to have more children or help support the ones they have then maybe the population ratio would balance out.

I say $10,000 annual grant to every child under 9 and $12,000 to every one until age of 16.

If Government doesn’t do that…haha…they are all going to be making Facebook videos talking nonsense like a certain ex politico…

Your liberal wet nosed reply is expected as it is the liberal left wing of most western political elites that have caused this major cluster **** in foreign policy in the first place. If the left wing cowards hadn’t drawn back from Obamas red line, hundreds of thousands of innocents would have stood a chance, millions wouldn’t have been displaced and Putin wouldn’t be flexing his military muscles.
So before you disrespect the undoubted will of those who have had enough of your cowardice and failed liberal ‘we know best’ attitudes, consider all those who are suffering at your wringing hands.

Learn this, educational prowess doesn’t give you the right to dictate, it neither means youre smart or right. Brexit should have taught the hand wringing liberals that ordinary working people, you know those who clean up your over indulged lifestyles and pay their full quota of demanded taxes, have had enough. Even Hollywood is learning that just because you’re a movie star, doesn’t make you popular or a spokes person for the masses. DeNiro looks a bigger fool today than he looked making that stupid anti Trump video.

OK, let’s start with Obama’s red line. Please read this article. It’s in the “liberal media”, I know, but indulge me. http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/07/obama-syria-foreign-policy-red-line-revisited-214059
It’s written by Derek Chollet, not a journalist but one of the dreaded intellectuals who was working at the time for the State Department and offers some very interesting insight into what actually happened and what could have happened if Obama had acted differently. As Trump (I know more than the generals) will now discover, such decisions are infinitely more complex than armchair military “experts”, like candidate Trump, have any idea of. I don’t know and you don’t know if he would have acted differently.

“Learn this, educational prowess doesn’t give you the right to dictate, it neither means youre smart or right.” I’m not exactly sure what point you’re making but, if we’re still talking about war, I hope to God such decisions are made with knowledge, understanding of the region and circumstances and expert advice. Are you suggesting that a commander in chief should go with his gut?

“ordinary working people, you know those who clean up your over indulged lifestyles and pay their full quota of demanded taxes” …

Really??? Do you have any idea who just became president? A man who stiffed small contractors, scammed ordinary people out of their hard-earned money via Trump University and hasn’t paid Federal tax for years. You’re denigrating the odd latte but you’re OK with a gold filigreed living room.

I hope that I am wrong about Trump and that he will use reason and logic, develop some empathy and put a clamp on his vindictive impulses. I just don’t think that’s going to happen.

First, there are no indeginous Caymanian people’s, please do your homework before brown nosing in future. The original settlers were white European from Great Britain and a modest number of Jamaican slaves and freemen. So if you want to talk ‘indigenous’ start there and work your way through history, (British, Cayman and Jamaican), recent, (within the last 50 years) immigration and the rise of the financial services and tourism industries.
These islands, since settlement, have always been a British territory, so until Cayman decides on independence, Caymanians are by nationality, British Citizens.
The inconvenient truth is that the vast majority of modern Caymanians have no idea where their families originated as huge swathes of immigration and inter marriage has ensured a multi national/ethnic and cultural foundation.
If there are indigenous peoples here on Cayman, please point them out and give a description. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just how it happened.

Secondly, God has nothing to do with Trumps win, it has everything to do with working class people, (black, white, Hispanic…) being treated as if they are second class citizens in a country they built from scratch. They are sick and tired of being dictated to by an obnoxious ruling elite whose only goal in life is to better their own lives in the name of global liberalism. The vast majority of working people cannot afford to exploit the huge numbers working on the employment black economy, (gardeners, house maids, nannies etc…) only the self entitled and over pampered can afford the luxury of an immigrant ‘helper’, so feeding the demand for illegal immigration from Latino countries.
Instead of encouraging illegal immigration into the US, the Liberals would do better encouraging their own citizens to take up unskilled and vacant labour by paying them a living wage, instead of blindly paying slave wages to immigrants so that they can live a better life off the back of them.

Exactly what has Obama done for his voters in South Chicago, apart from presiding over a weekly death rate higher than most countries have in a year. Where is all the money going from the richest country on the planet? Yep, to the liberal elites who care nothing for the unemployed or disfunctional as long as they can get their skinny latte within 2 minutes of walking into Starbucks.

Brexit discovered that the vast majority of Remain voters were from the metropolitan liberals in the £60k+ earning bracket or in the Scots and NI case, heavily dependent on subsidies from everyone but themselves.
That tells you all you need to know about the numbers for Remain, and almost certainly for the anti Trump camp in the US.

Change, any change at all costs you say, “cut off your nose to spite your face”. The UK voters who allowed themselves to be misled by populist snake oil sales persons are already discovering how painful that can be and I suspect that US citizens will soon be in the same predicament. Unfortunately we in Cayman will be also affected. Finally, while Trump won the electoral college handsomely and therefore is President Elect of the USA, guess which Presidential Candidate received the most votes?

Don’t speak for us, get your own s**t together before commenting on the will of 17.5 million people. You have the population of a small town and the mentality to match, so please, look around you and then decide who has fallen for snake oil salesmen.

        • Trump is dangerous says:

When he’s finished destroying the people who opposed him. Emperor Trump will erode the rights of his supporters. Read some history.

        • Caymanian says:

Speaking of mentally challenged, I imagine that in 4 years after you get your head out of you know where and see the ramifications of your stupid decision to back someone who has crashed so many companies, been sued more times than we have sand on our beaches, committed sexual crimes, shown to be a racist in a country that has a backbone built on inclusion of all. You are going to see what a STUPID decision you and nearly half of the US made on Nov 8th. Not saying Hillary is any saint but you picked the worst of the two. And time as they say is longer than rope and I am going to watch you hang yourself with it!!

No need to guess since it is a published fact, but it is not relevant, just like the premier of Cayman is insignificant to the rest of the developed world. Sorry to burst your bubble, but Alden is a nobody and should just keep quiet.

  18. Alden Alden Alden says:

oh Alden hush now. Trump isn’t going to read that much less respond. You better focus on:

    1. The Dump (That is your Ministry) – After you took it from Minister Driftwood
    2. Your Minister Panton and his failed Legal Practitioners Bill that almost sold us out
    3. Your Minister Panton and his conservation Law that even your own government has chosen to ignore
    4. Your failed Minister Rivers who has not yet implemented the Pension changes and retirement age
    5. your failed Minister Rivers who brought that piece of crap of an Education Bill down to the LA
    6. Your failed Minister Rivers who cant get the new Labour Law completed
    7. Your failed Minister Rivers who left education underfunded and under resourced for 4 years
    8. Your failed Minister Driftwood who has done absolutely nothing worth talking about
    9. your Governments failure to address the needs of the working class, cost of living, small business issues, Immigration….

    Should I Continue?

Forget Trump he is above your pay grade.

You got to get to anger management quick!

    • Anonymous says:

Well THERE’s absolute proof that God didn’t make the world in one day. “Should I continue” normally means “sorry I don’t have any more garbage to spew”. Forget Trump, my friend. It remains to see just exactly what he will do at his pay grade.

  19. Brett Sufferer says:

OH please!! Alden spare us you and your uk cohorts both are scared to death about his anti colonial agenda gone hopeful is this bank regulation bs that has been imposed upon common people by Obama and his european idiots. The biggest lesson Alden and friends better learn is when elected government allow foreign nationals to overwhelm the native population and then try or continue marginalized them there are consequences. We can only dream Caymanians will follow suit in the next election.

“Native Caymanians” is an oxymoron with the emphasis on moron.

      • ME, some type of driftwood says:

At 10:03pm. Is being British an oxymoron?

        What about American?

        European?

There is such a thing as a “native”, that’s what I am. What THAT means simply, is that I was born here, raised here and so were both my parents, as were their parents as well and on and on…

Respectfully, your attempt to discredit the native population is but a sad reflection of your envy and ignorance towards us; it is a reflection of your hatred and disdain. I have travelled all around the world, always respected the natives and locals wherever I ventured to because that’s the right thing to do; because that was what I was taught growing up in Cayman.

What is it about us that gets your little knickers in a such a tight twist????

Nativism is racism. Nativism is the knee jerk response of the mediocre to blame others for their own mediocrity.

          • Anonymous says:

I am with you 1.36 and everyone in Cayman is an import. No native Indians here. Only the turtles and the now non existent ‘Caiman” gators were native.

You driftwood lunatics are wearing out your welcome here faster than you think. Keep up the good work.

              • Anonymous says:

We never got a welcome. But we do ensure your government can pay out the handouts you need because your entitlement attitude blinds you to what you actually need to do to succeed (generalization, I know, and I work with many fine Caymanians, but 9.26…you got a problem)

          • Anonymous says:

What a twisted mind to think like that!

You don’t really comprehend what racism is. For you it’s just a useful slur to use on people whose views stray from your neoliberal orthodoxy.

We will “drain the swamp” in Cayman at the next election on 24/5/17

    • Anonymous says:

No, that’s the day you should vote. Draining the swamp would upset a lot of Caymanians and the natural balance of nature. Don’t drain, vote.

Yeah because DT will actually read that….

More semi-diguised, left wing diatribe from our impartial media.
McLaughlin knows very well that the election of Donald Trump spells the end of his “special relationship” with the Caymanian people ably abetted by a willing Press.
I cannot believe that I have seen this day! What a glorious thing.
