Second pregnant woman contracts Zika

| 13/10/2016 | 23 Comments

(CNS): Just days after public health officials announced that there had not been any new confirmed local transmissions of the Zika virus for some two weeks, a new test result has revealed that a pregnant woman in George Town has now tested positive for the virus transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The patient acquired the virus locally in the capital and is the second pregnant woman to contract the virus here in Cayman.

Officials stated that the new case increases locally transmitted laboratory confirmed cases of Zika to 18 while overseas diagnosed cases remain at 10.

There is more information on the Zika virus on the HSA website.

It is hilarious to see the fear porn peddlers get all bent out of shape about this. Some dubious science shows up in the mainstream media and they so desperately want it to be true so they can run around as pseudo-intellectual bullshitters trying to make the rest of us afraid.
No, I am not afraid and no I don’t believe everything I read just because it is in some “media” outlet.
Get a bloody life and grow up.

We need the troll button back. Congenital Zika Syndrome is not a trivial risk or a joking matter. It can terminate the fetus. Those fetus that survive to birth can suffer neurological, limb, and joint issues of varying degree and are often born many months premature. You’d have to be some kind of drunk insensitive moron to deny the risk to pregnant mothers against the library of medically known facts backed with statistical correlation from outbreaks all across the planet – spanning time from 1952 (and especially after 2007).

Florida Keys Residents would rather take their chances with Zika than let Oxitec release their Frankenbugs see link https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-zika-gmo-mosquitos/

I got a million bucks that says both of these babies will be born with normal sized heads.

What is the law when it come to Zika and termination? Its almost inevitable that these babies will be born with the secondary disease and so I ask will the Cay Government force these women to carry these babies to term? Absolutely terrible if they do.

    • Sam says:

And who made you a medical expert. Around the world, thousands of Zika infected pregnant women deliver normal babies.
      Chances are 0..000

and if they are born with the complications? Will you care for the child? thanks for volunteering.

Why is this just a government job? There is much that can be done by individuals to hepl stop the spread.

CNS can you please confirm and verify how the person got the Zika.
Was it for sure passed on through the mosquito or is it just saying that the mosquito can transmit the Zika virus. As far as being aware, the cases were all sexually transmitted.

    • Anonymous says:

How are you suppose to tell if it was a mosquito or sexually transmitted or via saliva, sweat, tears or sperm. That is asking the impossible. The point is to find the solution not the cause which is irrelevant at this point in time unless a traveler who travelled to a Zika zone and imported it into Cayman.

      • Anonymous says:

How do you tell? Now obviously you have not been reading the news lately. More then half of the cases were confirmed to be overseas and sexual.
There is always mention that the Mosquitos can transit the Virus. All in the same sentence. Which is an obvious ploy to make it seem it has anything to do with mosquitos.
The obvious fact Exactly is they do not know, but they have gone all out on this GM experiment. If they are not sure or do not have this facts are you telling me this GM thing is really an experiment that they do not have proof?
Are you telling me they could hand out condoms and have the same outcome achieved?
Why do they keep mentioning that the AG Mosquitoes could transmit this Virus, each time there is a case, even when they know 100% that it was sexual?

So the real question is to ask “then why have we deployed all of these GM if they have not had the data as they go along with this experiment?

        • SSM345 says:

8:49, you answer your questions quite a few times in your post, we are being made to be the experiment. Call us test dummies or whatever else but that is exactly what is happening by releasing GM mosquitos here.

Side effects and unforeseen consequences are a part of any and all experiments once its leaves a lab with controlled conditions, so wait for them because its inevitable when you mess with Mother Nature.

Agree, but active ingredient choice is important consideration for women. With a 3-5% chance of a chemically-induced birth defect from DEET, pregnant women and babies >6mos should probably avoid using the ingredient, even as directed in the safety sheets. Why bother taking the chance when 20% Picaridin works better, lasts longer, smells better, and is far safer. Woods, Sawyer, Off! “FamilyCare” Line are the products to look for. Protection for up to 12 hrs.

    This is too disturbing.

The government should make this a top priority to eradicate once and for all this elusive virus that is unstoppable and give assistance and support in whatever ways that can alleviate the family or mothers to the pain that they will face in the near future.

    • Anonymous says:

How do you eradicate something that is unstoppable tho?

      • Anonymous says:

The evolutionary advantage that has made Aedes Aegypti so successful in spreading around the world is owed to their specially adapted eggs with a very unique and hardy “serosal cuticle” which provides vastly superior egg resistance to desiccation (ERD). Essentially the eggs do not have the typical sensitivities to drying out that are common in most mosquito species. Without the traditional limitations, they can be laid on any dry surface and remain viable for months, enduring high heat and aridity that would prevent embryogenesis in other species. The best way to stop them is to prevent mothers from laying eggs altogether. There is no other species with this special egg adaptation, and thus, no other species that will suddenly assume their invasive role if they were to disappear. Here’s hoping.
