Scammers use premier as Facebook bait

(CNS): The police are warning the public to be on alert for the latest online scam being perpetrated by fraudsters. Officers from the RCIPS Financial Crimes Unit said fraudulent Facebook pages that purport to belong to Cayman Islands Premier Alden McLaughlin were being used as a means of soliciting cash from people who visit what they think is the premier’s Facebook page. Once “friended”, the online con artists were asking for donations and bank details through direct Facebook messages.

Although the specific pages were promptly removed from Facebook and so far there is no indication that anyone locally was conned, the RCIPS, which is is working with Facebook on this issue, warned that new pages could appear.

The police warned the public to be aware and exercise caution when any financial details are requested via social media, especially from the Facebook page of a public figure.

Suspicious instances should be reported to the RCIPS Financial Crimes Unit at 949-8797 or via email at RCIPS.FCU@gov.ky

I know of one PPM Supporter in BT who will cuss Alden one day and praise him the next on her social media. I think her profile has become bi-polar. Maybe we should report that one too
