Premier Alden McLaughlin at the 2015 JMC meeting in London

(CNS): The future of Great Britain and its dependent territories in a post-Brexit landscape will be high on the agenda next week when the UK meets with the leaders of its remaining colonies in London. Cayman Islands Premier Alden McLaughlin is travelling to the British capital today with a substantial delegation for the Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council, which formally opens Monday. Officials from the premier’s office said that in addition to Brexit, the main topics of discussion will be health, pensions and the environment.

There will be a number of plenary sessions, chaired by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister for the Overseas Territories, Baroness Anelay, which will also look at the implications of Britain’s exit from the European Union for the British Overseas Territories and their part in the negotiations. There will also be sessions on economic development, including the issue of infrastructure, international trade relationships, and good governance, which will include safeguarding children and human rights.

McLaughlin will be discussing the Framework for Fiscal Responsibility and its role in the Cayman Islands, though it is not clear if the Cayman government is hoping to water down the restrictions now that it has met the public finance targets.

In addition to the FCO formalities, McLaughlin will host a dinner for current and potential Friends of Cayman, where he will deliver a speech and entertain questions, as well as a reception for Caymanian students studying in the United Kingdom.

The JMC is an annual meeting designed to provide a forum for the exchange of views on political and constitutional issues between the governments of the territories. McLaughlin will travel with Financial Services Minister Wayne Panton, Finance Minister Marco Archer, Cabinet Secretary Samuel Rose, Financial Secretary Ken Jefferson, and Dax Basdeo, the chief office in the financial services ministry.

This year’s JMC ‘sherpa’ will be Jason Webster. The premier’s senior political advisor, Roy Tatum, and his press secretary, Tammie Chisholm, will also be among the delegation, which is expected to return to Cayman on Sunday, 6 November.

They could pop in an see Tara’s alma mater, the University of Allen and Overy. It’s term time, so surely there will be some lectures going on.

  2. .LONDONER says:

what do you mean, after that there’ll be term limits, the term limits should be already.in place with the current constitution that gave Cayman a premier, so the two t.erm limit.is also en force. If not then elections are illegal and you need to pound on the governors office door demanding intervention.

Please let Wayne do the talking cause this his last official trip representing Savannah/Bodden Town. Those who eat their turkey and listen to their false promises or take those election gifts $$$ are just as wuttless and fool fool as them. You are also supporting a Anti Cayman agenda plain and simple.

I genuinely think that it is time for the UK to consider letting non strategic OT assetts adrift.

What are we, fools? How stupid that an anti Brexit campaigner like Theresa May is representing the British public.
A vote was held and the majority spoke. End of.
Theresa May is an establishment asset and as such, nothing helpful can be expected from her.
She will drag her feet until she wears the people out. Perhaps she has studied the shenanigans of our dear Kurt?
Can’t wait for our elections. Big changes coming. Not a single incumbent will be re-elected. We are going to have fresh, untainted blood.
After that, there will be term limits to prevent the damage that prior cabals have inflicted on us.

I do find that those who use terms like “end of” are the sort of self-important but poorly educated prigs that support Brexit and think Trump is a sound political option.

    • Nunya says:

Sorry but you are dreaming – no elected official is going to set term limits as they all want to protect their own places in the free ride that 1/2 of them have doing on. You think big Mac and his ego is going to say I can stop serving now. Same for Alden.

Sorry but I don’t think I’ll live to see that.

Nice comment 3:36pm but wonder how will we assess “untainted blood”? Code for special uprising group perhaps?

    • Anonymous says:

I have always found that those who post online “end of”, “enough said”, “matter closed” are the sort of narrow minded prigs who are incapable of rational discourse. They would tend to see Brexit and President Trump as positives. End of.

“Always” is so all-encompassing, and in using such silly generalizations in matters you have no understanding of, you demonstrate your weakness.

        • Anonymous says:

And yet in your case at least there is clear evidence that the postulate is well founded.

        • Anonymous says:

“Always” was by reference to the individual poster’s personal experience, so the poster in question would have understanding of that. But you were too keen to try to give the impression of intelligence and education by using “big words” to notice. Keep digging, buddy, keep digging. It is fun to watch.

Nothing good will happen for any of us. These guys get to spend thousands out of the public purse on a bloody jolly and pretend that they are doing important things.

Perhaps they are enjoying the sunset of their “distinguished” careers of public service before the swamp that is the LA gets drained in the next election?

  10. Anonymous says:

Couldn’t they declare a national holiday for a week? I mean, who is going to lead us whilst these are all away? How shall we cope without the daily wit and instructions from our fearless leaders??

  11. Bluff Patrol says:

Mac style delegation less a few “influential Caymanians”?
