(CNS Business): Officials at Owen Roberts International Airport’s (ORIA) are warning passengers that work is stepping up at the facility on the renovation and expansion project. This means that travellers will see construction at both ends of the existing terminal over the next few weeks that will impact the normal flow of foot traffic around the terminal building. Work is also going to begin inside the terminal in the immigration area and departure lounge. Cayman Islands Airports Authority CEO Albert Anderson said, “There will be times when it will be very challenging for passengers to navigate through the busy airport, however, we ask that the public be patient with us as we continue to strive towards developing a world class facility.”

All of this should not be a problem if the security officers on duty are actually present and will ensure a proper traffic flow with the respective instructions given the public. BUT this can only work if EVERYONE is asked to follow direction, including friends/family of certain airport employees or self perceived VIPs who think they are constantly entitled to some exemptions of the rules which in their mind only apply to others…………….

Although extending the runway would make a huge difference to stay over tourism, especially in summer, by encouraging the European market.

why would europeans come to cayman?….they don’t come now and a bigger runway or ‘direct’ flights won’t change that….

    • Anonymous says:

The only thing that will make ‘a huge difference’ to the European market is getting the island geared up for the all-inclusive (AI) market. That’s what these islands are competing with and people need to get their heads round this. About 10 years ago DoT rebuffed an approach by a major UK AI tour operator on the basis that ‘this is not the way we do things here’ and nothing has changed since. This isn’t about the length of the runway, it’s about the cost of staying here and what you get for your money. Right now, when it comes to the UK/European market, Cuba, Jamaica, the DR and pretty much every other comparable destination in the region are beating us hands down.

Another huge accomplishment which we have demanded for years. Why are you all complaining.

  4. Anonymous says:

Why are they not working at night to get this job done faster an more efficient???

yep,,, all to be financed by higher airport charges and airfares…..thanks for nothing ppm.

It’s actually $67 per passenger for Owen Roberts airport taxes x 365,000 passengers per year equals almost $2.5 million dollars p.a.

    • Anonymous says:

Airfares have nothing to do with it. You are getting a triple sized terminal and you want it for nothing? Taxes are used to pay for public facilities the world over. Well…maybe not in your world but certainly in this one.

so we should have allowed another country/organization to come and build it and take the money in fees? Briliant.

  6. JTB says:

As I’ve previously asked, why are these people being trusted to run an upgrade budgeted at tens of millions of dollars, when they can’t manage a car park?

  7. Veritas says:

I note we had some severe thunder and lightning on Wednesday, did this spark a recurrence of the “left hand lightning” syndrome with regard to the exit gates in the parking areas?.

    • Anonymous says:

The fact that the gates are designed for left hand drive vehicles in a nation that drives on the left is a disgrace.

      • Anonymous101 says:

The gate has two sides! Get your facts straight. if one side doesn’t work you obviously use the next side, simply. Every company has their faults.

      • Veritas says:

They cater to both left and right hand drive, but only the left side ticket machine malfunctions after lightning.

        • Anonymous says:

I will see if we can talk to the Lord and ask him to make the lightening strike hit the correct sensor to satisfy you.

      • Anonymous says:

Every day there are people starving, dying of disease, persecuted by their dictators and you’re complaing about the gate not being perfect for you? Maybe you you should be thankful!

        • Anonymous says:

True but in even in those countries the airport parking machines work.

          • Anonymous says:

They should certainly be expected to work within the first few months of operation given the system cost was $9mln. It still takes 5 or 6 attempts to read a flippin $1 bill at the sheltered pay stations.

          • Anonymous says:

The gates basically say “Welcome back, we did this with the gates to remind you to expect things to be crap”.

        • Veritas says:

1.46pm but this has been going on for 30 years in a supposedly civilised advanced society!.

        • Anonymous says:

worst excuse ever for being too lazy to fix things.

it that the reason nothing is done about the dump, as what’s the point “Every day there are people starving, dying of disease, persecuted by their dictators”

are you a PPM MLA by chance?
