Hurricane Matthew 11am Saturday 1 October 2016

(CNS): As Hurricane Matthew rapidly increased to a category 4 hurricane Friday, the National Weather Service said it would be issuing a severe weather warning for the Sister Islands as the system was expected to pass within 240 miles of Cayman Brac on Monday. Cayman Airways also announced it would be waiving change fees for passengers who want to cancel flights to or from the Sister Islands and Jamaica, and the airline has added an extra flight from Grand Cayman to Montego Bay and Kingston on Sunday.

At 7pm local time Friday Matthew was about 440 miles SE of Kingston, Jamaica packing winds of 150mph. But as Matthew passes to the east on Monday, the Sister Islands can expect cloudy overcast skies with intermittent locally heavy showers and thunder, leading to localised flooding of low lying areas. Winds will be north to northwest 25 to 30 knots with higher gusts with very rough seas and waves of up to 9 feet and a possible storm surge up to three feet.

On Friday evening the NHC public advisory described Matthew as extremely dangerous and on its current forecast path it is headed directly for Jamaica, where it will arrive on Sunday night or Monday morning. Moving WSW at 9mph the experts said a westward motion at a slower forward speed was expected to continue Friday night and through Saturday.  A turn toward the west-northwest is forecast for Saturday night, followed by a turn toward the northwest on Sunday for the category 4 hurricane, which may fluctuate in intensity but it will remain a powerful hurricane through Sunday.

The article yesterday ‘threat of Matthew diminishes’ – yet more evidence given this article of how much guess work involved in weather forecasts.

Can these people make up their mind? no they can’t because weather is always changing, and if this storm doesn’t make that turn to the north soon they will be singing the same song for grand cayman

the National Hurricane Center has had the same turn in their forecast for a number of days now. What would you like them to make up their mind about?
