New generator keeping customers connected, says CUC

(CNS): Grand Cayman’s power provider, Caribbean Utilities Company, has stated that now the teething problems with its new generator have been ironed out, it is keeping customers connected. But a power outage for several hours in the Red Bay area of George Town last week, which got CNS readers hot under the collar as air conditioners fell silent, was down to a broken connection in the line leading into Red Bay Estates, a spokesperson told CNS following enquires about the power cut.

“This outage was not related to generation,” the firm stated, adding that there had been no issues relating to the new generator since the early problems were fixed.

Despite the ongoing complaints about power supply, CUC regularly claims well over 99% coverage in its quarterly reports. There have been numerous outages this year, however, blamed on a range of causes, from oil leaks and circuit problems to problems with the old generators ahead of the new generator being fired up in June.

So sick and tired of the excuses for crap service. Penalize them when they fail to provide service. Maybe that would get them off their easy chair.

    CUC should be nationalised.
This is not in any way a gesture to socialism, merely a practical step in the best interests of the people of Grand Cayman.
The Water Authority is structured as a quasi-commercial company, with Government owning all of the shares: it works, so why not set up an electricity company after a similar model.
As things stand CUC is majority owned by the Canadian power company Fortis. Yes the management will say that was a help after Ivan when they were able to bring in men and machinery to help with restoration of service, BUT the cost of that exercise was reflected in CUCs books until it was repaid.
It would be interesting to do a retrospective theoretical cost comparison between what CUC had to repay the Canadians and what, say, Florida Power & Light would have charged for the same assistance.

We all had that opportunity when Fortis was purchasing those shares. Can’t. blame them for other’s inability to act on good opportunities

I think they do a good job and I watch my usage cafefully to control my bills, e.g. turn things off, switch to more effecient bulbs, A/C temp not over-cool, etc. Yes costs could be less but the service is better then other comparible islands.

for the cost of electricty. I should sure hope so

I think they should put a feel good piece out about solar energy, and how they are trying to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. But ignore the fact that they prevent others from generating as much electricity as they want while tied into their grid.

It’s amazing how cheap electricity is in a country that has multiple suppliers that have to compete for your business like the U.K …if you aren’t happy with the price or have crappy service you can change with one phone call or reduce your bill with even just the threat of switching. Guess there are must too many shareholders in high places to allow any
      of competition eh ?

In larger countries the “grid” is owned by a non-producing entity. So they buy power from different sources and sell to the consumer at a slight markup. How would that work in such a small consumer base?

  6. Veritas says:

One thing they are really good at and which never lets them down, is generating profits, which regularly increase year by year.
