Gold legend Arnold Palmer has died, aged 87

(CNS): Described as one of the greatest and most popular golfers that ever lived, 87-year-old Arnold Palmer died Sunday afternoon at a hospital in Pittsburgh due to complications from heart problems. Nicknamed “The King”, he won the Masters four times and the British Open twice and was credited with popularising what was once an elite game. Palmer had visited Cayman a number of times as he had put his name to a proposed golfing resort in Frank Sound that American developers were hoping to get off the ground later this year.

CNS contacted the developers of Ironwood regarding the impact Palmer’s death will have on the project. Officials released a short statement saying the team was “deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Arnold Palmer” and offering condolences to his family. They said that his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Roy Saunders, had been at the helm for some time now, and would continue working with Ironwood to create the golf course development. If the resort goes ahead, it will be the first Palmer Signature 18-hole Golf Course in the Caribbean

Meanwhile, the government, which has been in talks with the investors over the extension of the east-west arterial highway to support the project, issued a statement of condolence but made no comment about the future of the $300 million project and the road talks.

“He was always warmly welcomed and residents were captured by his unique spirit and endearing personality,” government officials said in the wake of his death.

“It is an honour and a privilege to call Mr Palmer a friend to the Cayman Islands. As one of golf’s greatest ambassadors, he will always be remembered and greatly missed for his immeasurable contribution and impact on the game. The Cayman Islands extends deepest condolences to Mr Palmer’s family and friends and trust that his lasting legacy will bring comfort to his loved ones at this sad and difficult time,” the government added.

They still going on about this fake golf course?

Captivated perhaps, but “captured”? Really? In what sense?

    • Anonymous says:

It is perfectly acceptable to use “captured” in the same sense as one “captures the imagination” when dealing with qualities such as “spirit” and “personality”. “Captivated” could also be used, but “captured” is not incorrect, as you imply.

Nonsense. No such word in this context.

Since when did you become the arbiter of usage? What qualifications have you got that mean you can trump the overwhelming view of the thumbs, presumably comprising of native English speakers in whole or in the main, that you are full of it?

We need an 18 hole course in the Brach as well.
When will government be tackling this.

I always felt that the PPM Government needed to hurry up with this Ironwood/road extension deal because from the pictures Mr. Palmer did not look like time was on his side.

I’m disappointed that they sat on this for so long that it actually happened. My condolences to Mr. Palmer’s family, and shame on these incumbent decision makers.

West Bay’s traffic isn’t serious and they’re still getting more roads. Talk about neglect over here in the Eastern Districts. These elections couldn’t come soon enough. Sorry to go off topic.

Yes way off topic! Nothing to do with PPM.

At last, a smart poster on CNS; one who has figured out that an 87 year old man does not have time on his side.

      • Anonymous says:

But not smart enough to appreciate that Palmer was but a figurehead, and that his death, while of course sad to those who knew him, has no effect one way or the other on a road-building project.
