Tropical Storm Earl, Tuesday 2 August, 5pm EDT

(CNS): Government officials lifted the local tropical storm watch at 4pm Tuesday as TS Earl passed around 200 miles south of the islands heading towards Honduras at around 16mph. But with maximum sustained winds of over 50 mph and the storm stretching some 90 miles from the centre, Cayman was expected to experience windy, cloudy and rainy weather through the night with the potential for some locally heavy showers and flooding of low lying areas. The National Hurricane Center in Miami warned that Earl could become a hurricane in the next few days.

Grand Cayman was set to see east to southeasterly winds near 20 to 25 knots with higher gusts and rough seas with wave heights of 7 to 9 feet through early tonight, becoming fresh southeasterly winds near 15 to 20 knots with higher gusts with wave heights of 5 to 7 feet by tomorrow morning.

All marine interests in Grand Cayman were warned to seek safe harbour this evening and remain there until further notice. Meanwhile, the Sister Island were not expected to be impacted by the stormy weather.

Stupid comment 7.58, some of the real nasty weather was only 10-15 miles south of here and some of it still is same distance south and west this morning. In weather terms that’s a very near miss. Better prepared and thinking about it than regretting it or being buried later.
