Ronald Forbes at the 2016 Rio Olympics

(CNS): Cayman’s 110m hurdler Ronald Forbes has spoken about his disappointment over Monday night’s result in a video interview. Explaining the battle he has had over the last three months with a serious injury, he said he was pleased to have cleared all ten hurdles. Joey Scott, his coach, said he wanted to “yank him from the race” but that Forbes was determined to carry the Cayman Islands flag over the line. “Yesterday was not one of my best performances but it was one of my toughest to date,” he said.

The runner, originally from North Side, did not practice over hurdles until two weeks before the start of the Olympic Games because of the injury he sustained twelve weeks ago and that had kept him off the track.Forbes said it takes an “unbelievable amount” of effort and dedication to make it into the Olympics and although his coach said he wasn’t ready, Forbes believed he was and wanted to race regardless because, he said, you can’t make excuses.

As he faced the line of hurdles in a competitive race for the first time in months, Forbes said he did not know how he was going to do it, but when he started running, he said, he just kept telling himself to “keep clearing the hurdles”.

Coach Scott said that even though he was not 100% ready for the race, he gave 110% to it and his performance showed a lot of character. Despite the disappointment of the result at this Olympic Games, Forbes is not giving up. Although this is his third Games, his coach believes he still has a “lot left in the tank”, and as one of the best hurdlers in the world, these Games won’t be his last.
