tropical wave 1 Aug(CNS): As a strong tropical wave moved towards Jamaica Monday evening, officials from Hazard Management placed Cayman under a tropical storm watch. At 7pm local time the area of stormy weather was around 200 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and was moving around 20mph. Expecting the system to be upgraded to a tropical storm overnight, local weather experts forecast heavy rain and strong possibly tropical storm force winds from late tonight into tomorrow evening across Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands.

Chief Meteorologist John Tibbetts said Cayman could expect an increase in cloudiness and showers from late tonight as the wave moves into area, with cloudy rainy conditions expected tomorrow. Over an inch of rain was expect over the next 24 hours with some locally heavy showers at times, leading to possible flooding of low lying areas. All residents should continue to exercise caution.

Moderate to strong easterly winds and rough seas with wave heights of 5 to 7 feet are expected through tonight, becoming very strong with wave heights increasing to 8 to 10 feet by tomorrow.  All marine interests should seek safe harbour and remain there until further notice.

Hazard Management said residents should have a Hurricane Supply Kit ready during the season. Information about what to have in your kit can be found on www.Caymanprepared.gov.ky
