Fire at the West Shore Plaza

(CNS): Firefighters were called out to a blaze at a West Bay Road shopping strip Tuesday night that claimed three premises, including a well-known café. Treats, Party Mania and the former Cayman Shoe Shop at the West Shore Plaza in the heart of the Seven Mile Beach tourist area were all badly damaged after a ceiling fire started sometime after the shops closed for the evening yesterday.

No one was hurt in the fire but officials have been unable to say how it started. The smell of burning still hung in the air Wednesday as fire experts began combing through the ashes to find out what had happened to the stores and small restaurant, which are all expected to remain closed for some time.

Meanwhile, police and fire fighters were called to another fire in the Prospect area Wednesday evening. Unofficial sources have told CNS that there may have been an explosion at a construction site.

It’s been a busy week for the Cayman Islands Fire Service. Investigators are still examining the possible cause of a blaze in Cruz Lane, George Town, in the early hours of Sunday morning that gutted a wooden house that was home to three families.

Although the residents believe the cause of the fire was arson, a fire service spokesperson has said they are unable to comment on how it started until they examine the evidence in the remains of the fire.

I wish Treats and its staff all the best. It was always my place for breakfast after church on Sundays and I am really going to miss them..they had the best and friendliest staff and of course the best breakfast at the best price on island.

Good luck and God bless you all!

There is a lot of smoke damage. There were 2 adjoining shops that were also affected.
Smoke damage is horrific. One of the other shops was a new pharmacy/chemist due to open in a matter of days.

Hopefully, Treats can get their bakery business back up asap and get some cash flowing and then focus on re-opening the restaurant.

Traumatic times for a lot of people. Wishing them all the best.

The staff at Treats are so friendly and wonderful. The management do such a great job supporting the local community. This is always one of the nicest places in Cayman to have a basic breakfast at a reasonable price. I pray that they are able to reopen before too long and that all of the staff will be able to stay on.
