Cuban vessel crashes on Cayman Brac rocks

(CNS): A group of nine Cuban migrants were taken to Faith hospital on Cayman Brac yesterday after the makeshift boat they were on crashed into the rocks on the west side of the island. The nine men were handed over to local authorities on the island Wednesday afternoon (13 July) following treatment for minor injuries after the vessel ran aground.
The group, which is understood to be a different one from the group that arrived on Monday, is now awaiting transfer to Grand Cayman.
The authorities said that the men will be held at the Immigration Detention Centre at Fairbanks since work on expanding that facility has been completed.
This group increases the total number of Cuban migrants currently held in the Cayman Islands to 74 people.

we were on island about 15 years ago when a boat load of Hondurans washed up. their “motor” on the boat was fixed, they were given food/water and sent off into the sunset.
Why in hell does the Cayman Islands Authorities think it’s up to them to determine what happens to these people? LEAVE THEM ALONE OR SEND THEM ON THEIR WAY! DON’T KEEP THEM DETAINED AGAINST THEIR WILL! TALK ABOUT INHUMANE!

Once the refugees come ashore in the Cayman Islands it is against the international laws to assist anyone to move on to a third country. It is can also be considered assisting smuggling. That is why the government determines what happens to these people ! If they do not come ashore no one will detain them. They need to stay their behinds in Cuba or ensure that they do not come ashore. IS THIS SIMPLE ENOUGH FOR YOU? In this care government is simple obeying the laws and the Cubans are running up expenses that we can hardly afford. You should be upset about that.
It is not against international law to help persons truly in need. Have you noticed in Europe that no one is being returned to their country of origin? The difference in Cayman is the the government (DG) has decided that the Cubans are not true refugees.
I’ve also noticed the fences with razor wire going up along European borders, external and internal. Do NOT think that this issue is any different in any other country, no matter how bleeding-heart they like to think themselves. As soon as there are more ‘incomers’ (refugees) than easily available resources the fences (metaphorical and in Europe’s case actual) go up.
You may have also noticed in Europe that the fear is that terrorist could use the refugee crises to enter Europe. The Cubans have not been accused of being terrorists nor do they want to stay in Cayman.
No, I can assure you that the ‘terrorism fear’ is not what is undergirding those fences. It is not wanting open borders. See ‘the jungle’ on the French/English border for exhibit A predating the current European migrant/refugee crisis.
When is it we are going to leave these cubans alone. Who in the foxtrot is paying to flying them back home?
Considering the headline (boat crashes on Brac) leaving the Cubans alone I assume means either (1) they drown or (2) they wander around the Brac living rough for the rest of their lives. Given the realities of the situation Govt. can use my taxes to send the Cubans home by the most expeditious means possible, one of the regularly scheduled flights.
