Cayman News Service(CNS): The first general elections to be held in Cayman under the ‘one man, one vote’ system in 19 single member constituencies is scheduled to take place exactly one year from today. Provided that the current PPM government can retain its very narrow majority, the date of the next national ballot is set for Wednesday, 24 May 2017. Parliament is expected to be dissolved on 28 March next year followed by the all-important Nomination Day, when all the candidates will be declaring their intention to run and in which of the new 19 districts they hope to be returned as the single representative.

Supervisor of Elections Wesley Howell said the official list of candidates will be announced on 31 March after vetting is completed by each of the 19 returning officers, who will oversee the elections process in each constituency. Then, on 1 April 2017, the second quarter 2017 Register of Electors comes into force, listing all of the people that will be eligible to vote and where.

Over the next few months the Elections Office will be engaging in a catalogue of activities, such as training key personnel, pushing a voter drive to encourage the 5,000+ eligible people to register, checking the details of registered voters in the new constituencies, as well as educating the public about the change to the local political landscape and how the new system works.

“To ensure that all eligible persons who wish to vote are on the list, I encourage them to check whether they are now included in the register. It will be updated every quarter until the 1 April 2017 list, which will be the last update prior to the elections,” Howell said, as he reminded voters and potential voters that the absolute deadline to get on the 1 April list is 31 December this year.

I wish nomination day was before registration deadline.
That way I could see if there was any one worth voting for and if not not risk jury duty.

Dosen’t matter so long as we can keep Mac’s fingers the hell out of access to the country’s money.

Well Suckoo Connolly and Eden seem to be safe. We can start with them and see who else steps up to join them in fihhting for their people in the next 10 months.

it’s a pity that the hardest working, most educated and highest tax paying residents cannot vote or be elected….
    just another day in wonderland…..

Go back where you came from if you want to vote.

We will if you choose sensibly this time. Leaving the decision with you guys is like giving a 3 year old kid the keys to the candy factory.

If you happen to be from the US, just think TRUMP and SHUT UP

          • Anonymous says:

Well Trump ain’t elected yet and I ain’t from the US, so hush your loud mouth and concentrate on getting it right here for a change. Why do people here think pointing fingers elsewhere excuses them from their own stupidity? So its OK to elect Dumbo’s here if the US does? Go figure.

            • Anonymous says:

And speaking about pointing fingers; look who’s talking. If the DONALD were from a Third World country, the Western press would have had a field day. All some of you do is criticise. Just examine your own countires. Most of them got wealthy by plundering Third World countires. Oh, I’m sorry; you weren’t even born then. Very very sorry, my lord.

why would you be afraid of residents voting????????????
        what would jesus do?

    • Anonymous says:

If you truly were, then you would go through the process of becoming a citizen.

There is no country in the world that allows non-citizens the right to vote.

      • Anonymous says:

maybe, but I just discovered that non citizens can serve on juries in England. and the question really is why are so many people not allowed to be citizens.

      • Jotnar says:

Actually, you can vote in the UK if you are Commonwealth citizen resident in the UK. So a Caymanian living in London can vote in the British general election, but a Brit residing here cannot.

    • Anonymous says:

well you can ……..if you have Cayman Status and got yourself added to the voters list. Same as EVERY other country where you have to be a citizen in order to vote!

the last udp government were masters of incompetence…..
current ppm government are lazy do -nothing fat cats….
    so..what you gonna do cayman???

    • Jotnar says:

If previous form is anything to go by, elect the last lot, then change again at the next election – repeat ad nauseam. To be fair to the electorate, its not as tho they are overwhelmed with choice. And they wonder why they struggle to recruit another 5000 qualified voters to register.

I would vote for Derek Haines if I could. He has done more good for Cayman than anyone I can think of. So when you get to the ballot box Cayman, just write “non of the above” below the usual suspects names and write in Derek’s and tick that.

The current Progressive led Government has worked very hard and produced good results. You forget the mess that they faced in 2013. Each day they work into the night to make things better for us. To name a few good results, reduction in import duties and other fees that benefit everyone while balancing the budget. A budget with surplus also means that they can step in when needed like the Ready2workKY program. The Government continues to do their part to reduce unemployment. Caymanian unemployment is now at its lowest since 2007. Don’t forget the vigorous defense of our financial industry and the minimum wage.

ppm inherited a budget surplus…..they have largely benefitted from improving economic international conditions generally especially lower oil prices….
they have done little or nothing on the following:
        cost of doing business
        immigration
        dump
        port
        civil service reform

      • What about the friggin dump? I thought they said they had a solution.
