Campbell’s Bar, Portland Road

(CNS): A 35-year-old man from George Town has been convicted of unlawful wounding for stabbing a pregnant woman in the stomach during an argument in a car park after he gave her and several of her friends a ride home on 24 November 2014. The jury found Marlon Porter guilty Monday of possession of an offensive weapon and unlawful wounding after less than two hours of deliberation. Porter, who said he did not know the woman was pregnant, had denied the charges, claiming he had picked up the knife at her house and stabbed her in self-defence when she and her friends attacked him.

The crown’s case was that Porter stabbed his victim when she refused to have sex with him after he arrived at the apartments where she and her friends all lived. The court heard during the trial last week that Porter had driven the women home after a party at Campbell’s Bar in Portland Road.

When they arrived at the apartment complex, the women got out of the car but before the victim did so Porter asked her to have sex with him. She refused his advances and he then grabbed her phone. In turn, she grabbed his car keys before getting out of the car and alerting her friends.

She told her friends that Porter had taken her phone and one of them came to her aid with a broom, but she was quickly disarmed by Porter who began chasing the two women around the car park with the broom. However, Porter then suddenly produced a knife and stabbed at the victim three times before getting into his car and fleeing the scene.

The victim claimed that she was stabbed so deeply here intestines were coming out of her stomach and she had to push them back in. However, although one of the women with her gave evidence that she saw her friend pushing something back into the stab wound, there was no medical evidence to support the claim.

The hospital was also unable to confirm if the woman had lost the fetus as a result of the injury because she left the hospital before a scan was taken. Nevertheless, the woman suffered several stab wounds, including a serious stab wound to her stomach and was treated at the hospital, where she was admitted for several days.

However, Porter had claimed that his victim had offered him sex for money when he dropped her home but he refused because he was a married man. He said that when she got out of his car, he noticed $250 was missing so he went after her to get his money. As he entered her house, he saw the phone and knife on the dresser and took them, he said, but he did not use the knife until the woman and her friends attacked him and he wasn’t even certain he had stabbed the woman before he fled the scene.

But he did not report the incident and drove some distance from the scene before disposing of the knife. He was only tracked down when one of the women involved in the altercation spotted him at Campbells Bar several weeks after the stabbing, when she called the police and he was arrested.

Following the verdict, Porter, who is a Jamaican national married to a Caymanian, was remanded in custody until his sentence hearing, which is expected to take place next month.

‘Looking forward to the Golden Spoon review of Campbell’s Bar!

What is a lawful wounding? 3 times in a stomach?!

I bet he gets less than 4 years. And stabbing a pregnant woman in the stomach is attempted murder in my opinion.

Who cares about details of her wounds. She was stabbed 3 times for God’s sake. Truly barbaric. Violence agains women is mind blowing here. Anna Evans and Jamaican nurse Kerran Baker disappeared without a trace. Mrs. Scott-Roberts was burned. 21-year-old Nichelle Anna-Kay Thomas chopped in a machete attack. And there is Violence agains women Law in existence. Too much for a civilized country of 60,000 people.

Ah, but your research will confirm that the murderers or prime suspects in each of those cases did not come from here. They did all however come from another Island. The same Island the scum in this article comes from.

No point in trolling that comment. It is a fact that a significant amount of criminality and social problems have been imported from Jamaica. Of course not all Jamaican immigration is negative but it is sad that such a substantial amount is. This is not just Cayman’s experience but that of many other countries and is why there are so many restrictions on Jamaicans around the world.

this is the CAYMANIAN WIFE sounding off… for those of you who believe everything you read, including those stories that are blatantly one-sided, you may continue to live under a dome. That would explain why all these ANONYMOUS people had something to say today! There are several errors in this story – I know because I saw the female reporter, on her cell phone, completely ignoring the Judge’s explanation of the defence. She wrote this to garner interest, people – don’t you get it?! For those of you who knew what took place, and in general, prefer to know both sides b4 making judgements… we appreciate you!

    CNS:
Just to clarify: one of the supposed errors referred to (following our phone conversation) is that the victim was pregnant, which you say was not proved. To explain: the victim herself gave evidence that she was pregnant at the time and this was accepted by the court as truthful evidence, which is how it was reported. The fact of her pregnancy was not supported by any doctor’s report but — and this is important — it was not challenged by anyone either, and is therefore accepted as the truth and does not need to be proved. Her pregnancy was not on trial.

I can absolutely guarantee that whatever else Wendy was doing, she was not ignoring the defence and reported on this trial, as she does all trials, as professionally and as accurately as she possibly could. As the only full time reporter for CNS, she has become adept at multi-tasking but her accuracy is very rarely questioned.

Now, I know that this is an incredibly painful time for you but your husband was found guilty of this violent crime in a court of law, where both sides — the prosecution and the defence — were thoroughly explored. I’m really sorry for your situation but it is entirely unfair to blame Wendy rather than your husband for this.

One can only imagine what explanation and or excuse the convicted man gave to explain his “innocence”.

enabler vs CNS… the later wins. the truth always helps.

This reminds me of a story about a Caymanian woman who caught her husband coming out of a hotel room with another woman. When challenged as to what he was doing his response was: “Who do you want to believe, you lying eyes or your loving husband?”

This story is beyond belief. How low can a person go? Convicted of unlawful wounding instead of grievous bodily harm or attempted murder? Not to mention a married man probably with children.

His Caymanian wife should divorce this animal so he can be deported back to Jamaica.

This happens all the time. When are the Cayman women going to realize that some foreign men only see an immigration stamp when they look at them.

Anyone remember what a wonderful place Cayman used to be before we were before the Jamaican invasion….thanks Mac.

      • Robert says:

Cayman is still wonderful and I love the fact that Jamaicans are here because I love Jamaican women, and they love me too.

So thank you, Mac. As a Caymanian man I could not be more pleased because right now these Jamaican women seem to be all I need. They are so much more respectful, know a man’s needs, and have useful home skills.

The last Caymanian woman I dated, I cooked for her once and was looking forward for her to reciprocate, but she did not know how. Isn’t that ridiculous? And no, it wasn’t my job to teach her.

You’re lucky, my wife can cook, and she does every day, only problem is, she cooks dinner, then eats it before I get home from work…

Go read our history books. Jamaicans did not invade Cayman. Some of our Caymanian people do violent things too. I personally don’t think it’s fair to blame it on their nationality. in every country there are people who do really bad things. It’s just that in cayman’s media, once a crime is committed by Caymanian people no one hears the nationality but one its an expat, we never hear the end of it. Because no one from paradise does anything wrong. This man is wrong and heartless to stab someone so many times. But we shouldn’t blame it on where he is from. More than half of my school teachers throughout my entire school life were from other islands or the UK and they weren’t violent.

Being married gives him no right to be here. He should be deported anyway!
