Cayman News Service(CNS): Four people escaped serious injury in the early hours of Saturday morning (19 March) in a two-car smash in George Town. Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision on Bobby Thompson Way near the junction of John Greer Blvd at around 2:45am. A red Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by a 28-year-old man with two female passengers, aged 45 and 32, was travelling towards George Town when it collided with a black Mercedes travelling in the opposite direction, driven by a 40-year-old man.

All four people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and police closed the road for several hours for investigators to examine the evidence and for the two cars to be removed. The road has now been reopened to traffic.

Witnesses are asked to contact PC Chong at the Traffic Department on 946-6254 or GT police station on 949-4222.

In order for the RCIPS to enforce laws they must first understand them; hence the problem.

We have a large number of incompetent officers who do not care to learn the laws in which they are meant to enforce, some struggle to read and write proper English.

Ignorance begets ignorance folks; do you really expect much better?

Truthfully, there is no excuse for the lack of police presence on our roads island-wide. We have hundreds of vehicles dedicated to the RCIPS and associated units; perhaps if the officers took better care of their brand new, air-conditioned patrol cars, we wouldn’t have to be replacing them every turn around. We have a million dollar chopper flying around and around daily and yet so few results with such a vast amount of resources.

We are a laughing stock I swear. In Cayman we are given millions to work with and hardly see the result of such resources. Neighboring Caribbean Countries only dream of the type of resources we get our hands on and what do we have to show for it?

We are spoiled in Cayman; so are our officers of the law. They have been given too much and nothing is expected of them!

Basic rules are never going to be enforced as long as patronage is the order of the day and the police themselves are such bad drivers.

Where are the traffic police? I thought they were out and about now? Not that they would have been there for that crash, but this weekend I heard speeding bikes down South Sound rd at 2am and on Sunday saw an idiot on a purple motorbike (the kind with those 2 big fat wheels) speed past several cars in the middle lane down West Bay rd after being stopped at the light by Wendy’s. That was at 3pm on SUNDAY AFTERNOON, broad daylight and still no traffic cops patrolling. Are they off on Sundays? What do we have to do to get some police presence around here?

I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for the traffic patrols to begin to enforce basic traffic laws and general road user etiquette. This morning while sitting in traffic with a marked police car behind me the two vehicles in front of me drove right past the sign saying “Left turn permitted on red light after full stop” without stopping and turned left on the red light. Literally a few seconds later a private car coming in the opposite direction driven by a uniformed police officer with her phone up to her ear went right past the same police car. If they are not going to do anything about the obvious infractions I highly doubt they will ever be proactive in enforcing the rules.

On my way home on Sunday evening I stopped at a stop sign and could see in my rear view mirror that the driver behind me had to break suddenly to avoid running into me and was irate that I had stopped because there was nothing coming. Clearly the driving tests here are way to easy and there are many people that need to be disqualified from driving because they do not understand the basics. If there basic rules of the road were enforced this would be a much safer place to use the roads for all.

Put nails on the road around 2:45 every Sunday afternoon. They will pass by without fail and you won’t have to worry about them coming by again.
