Scientists predict rising costs with rising seas

Cayman news Service(CNS): In the face of worrying predictions over sea-levels rises and more flooding, researchers are warning that little progress has been made on estimating how much the damage such events cause will cost in the future. Scientists from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) have been working on quantifying losses and experts have found the cost of the damage will increase at a higher rate than the sea-level rise itself.

“When sea levels rise, damage costs rise even faster, our analyses show,” said Markus Boettle, the lead author of the study published in the journal, Natural Hazards and the Earth System. “At the same time, the severity of flood impacts is not only determined by environmental factors, but also to a significant extent by human decisions: flood defense measures can counteract the increasing flood risk.”

As low lying islands, Cayman is on the front line of the impending issues relating to rising seas and is already no stranger to costly catastrophic events, which scientists believe will increase as sea levels increase.

“A concise assessment of potential economic consequences is indispensable for appraising the efficiency of adaptation measures,” explains co-author Diego Rybski. “Even when temperatures stabilize, sea levels will continue to rise and shape our coastlines for future generations. So, additional preventive measures need to be considered in addition to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, to help coastal regions especially in transition and developing countries to adapt and to limit damage costs.”

As a large share of the world population lives in coastal regions, Jürgen Kropp, director of the RAMSES project said with limited funds for adaptation the research is important. “While mitigation remains of vital importance to keep climate impacts on a still manageable scale, an adaptation perspective can help to limit damage costs in the right places,” he said.

Cimate Change/Global warming is a fraud designed to rip you off via global taxation aka “Carbon Credits”. Al Gore has already made millions from it. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&rlz=1C1CHWA_enKY586KY586&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#safe=off&q=al+gore+billionaire+carbon+credit

If its on the internet it must be true. Just ask my online girl friend…she is a super model in somethingastan. There is so much data to prove it…and I was in china to see and taste fist hand what man has been doing to this little planet. Global climate change is real and with it will come trouble and costs. You must be one of those people that throw stuff out of their cars and think it just vanished into nowhere.

I would suggest you read some of the real science. Or maybe just move to High Rock.

Yea i heard 35 years ago we had a black hole in our ozone layer and the sun was going to burn up the Earth.
You guys need to remember Man did not create this World and you wont destroy it.

The World must go through some evolution changes like the Ice Age, we will get past it. how many inches the Ocean will rise again?? pure rubbish!!

If you are correct then the bible must have been lying when it said god will ruin those ruining the earth Revelations 11:18 . Since man cant ruin the earth than that Scripture is a lie and if you do believe it then your church must be lying to you…so hard to tell…or is it both.

yes indeed, climate change is a hoax, so you believe that climate has never changed in the history of the earth, too funny. Especially when even in cayman there is evidence that sea levels have covered cayman on 3 occations.

If you are refering to man made climate change, it does not matter, sea levels will still rise.

An analagy is not preparing for a hurricane, as you don’t believe humans caused it. The hurricane is still going to get you.

You need to read the real science on climate change, and then move to High Rock.

Nobody will hear you. Nobody will bother to past that URL and read it. Nobody will bother to paste mine. Thus, we are doomed to waste billions of dollars that will do nothing except waste the money from our pockets.
