(CNS): Immigration officials deported 32 Cuban migrants on Tuesday but over 100 still remain at the Immigration Detention Centre or in civic centres in East End, Bodden Town or prison facilities, and two are in jail after being on the run for three months. Costs are running high as government faces another surge in the arrivals of Cubans trying to reach Honduras on their journey to the US in makeshift boats.

During yesterday’s joint operation by immigration, customs and the prison service, 28 men and four women were repatriated. But 102 Cubans who came ashore in Cayman this year for one reason or another, including a group rescued by a cruise ship last month, remain, waiting for their cases to be processed. Government has spent well over $1 million already this financial year, with migrant costs said to be running at more than $3,000 per head.

What is the problem? There are many flights a week to Cuba.

I was behind the bus transporting the 32 deportees on Tuesday. One man was sharing his pack of chewing gum with most of the bus. I could see this all through the large window at the back of the bus. Then I saw the side windows opening and gum wrappers being tossed out of the bus and onto the street. With that mentality I have a tough time wishing we were more accommodating to them. What a mess.

As I drove past Mt Trashmore on my way home to Bodden Town yesterday, I saw someone drop a gum wrapper and thought how awful they were as human beings. I was watching them to avoid looking at the environmental disaster to my left that is not being sorted because I and nimbys like me did not want a facility in a place that it would not affect me in the slightest.
