Have a question or a problem? Auntie is here to help

| 15/03/2016 | 15 Comments

Cayman News Service(CNS): Cayman News Service has launched a new column, ‘Ask Auntie’, on CNS Local Life, one of our three news websites. Launched last week, the column aims to fill a gap here in the Cayman Islands and will be a blend of problem page, information booth and citizens’ advice bureau. If you need to find something out about life in the Cayman Islands or you have a problem, ‘Auntie’ will try to help or direct you to someone who can or hunt down the information you need.

‘Ask Auntie’ is specific to the Cayman Islands and is meant for people who live here, used to live here or are planning to move here and Auntie will be looking for the answers locally.

Auntie is not a doctor or a psychologist or a lawyer or an expert in anything except digging out information or finding out who to go to when you need help. You can send her questions about anything — she can’t promise to find the answer but she is very resourceful and will do her best.

You can submit a question to Auntie by emailing info@caymannewsservice.com or you can send it to us as a comment on any article on any of the three CNS news website: Cayman News Service, CNS Business or CNS Local Life. We have frequently received questions or information requests via the comments in the past but just did not have time to deal with them. From now on, the comment moderator will refer them to Auntie to deal with.

It is not necessary to give us your name or contact details when you submit a question to Auntie, though if you do they will never at any time be made public unless you give us permission to do so.

The comment box will be open on Auntie’s answers, so if you think you have something to add or you think that Auntie is wrong, you can weigh in and offer your own advice or experience in the matter.

‘Ask Auntie’ is a free public service from CNS. We hope that the new column will be used and will prove helpful to the community.

Auntie, I’m currently employed in a position where I get paid by Commission only. My employer has me pay my 5% pension each pay check but says he doesn’t have to match it because my pay is commission based. Is this correct or should my employer follow the Pension Law and pay his 5% share? Thank you,

They are supposed to. I work commission base and my employer has to pay. I believe its Cayman law that the employer has to no matter what.

Dear Auntie, I am a gay atheist. Will I be welcome to live and work in the Cayman Islands?

your currently being trolled. trolling has been around since comment sections on websites were invented. google the definition on an internet troll.

    • Anonymous says:

I understand the definition of trolling but when someone identifies themselves as a troll but leaves no comment, then what is the point?

What does hitting the troll button mean?

    • Anonymous says:

Wow five trolls and I still don’t have an explanation of what it actually means.

        Here you go 🙂

In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion, often for their own amusement.

Dear Aunti we have so many social issues that need resolution and all your readers can ask about is the darn troll button. Really!!! I want a survey on how many voters would like to see some form of legalized gambling that the proceeds would go to assisting the government with their social programs that have been agreed through a national strategic plan? I also want to know why we don’t have a consumer bureau to ensure consumers are treated fairly by businesses. The chamber’s focus is on merchants not consumers. Why have we not eradicated the pesky green iguanas? I can’t grow any vegetables in my backyard. Can we explore a national unemployment insurance plan where unemployed can get up to 12weeks pay to assist when unemployed? Come on peeps I know everyone can do better with your questions. Geez!

CNS- Ask Aunties sounds like it would be a valuable resource. All the best with this venue. However, a constructive suggestion, please ensure those answering queries have knowledge of the question and can provide accurate information. Too often (as recently as this week) I encounter folks telling visitors (especially) inaccurate information about Cayman. Apparently no malicious intent, simply that they answer queries to which they don’t know the accurate answers.

I’m approaching 60 and would be willing to be a resource on matters Cayman during my lifetime.

CNS: The person writing this column will do her utmost best to make it as accurate and informative as possible. However, readers’ input is also important, so we really do hope that you and others like you will read the Q&As and use the comment section if you think she’s left something out or got anything wrong.
