Campers urged to keep sites clean

(CNS): As families prepare for the traditional holiday camp-out around the islands’ beaches this Easter weekend, the Department of Environmental (DEH) is urging campers to keep sites clean and to recycle their rubbish. Littering is not only unsightly but illegal, officials said and warned that offenders can be prosecuted and fined up to $500. Fishing lines and plastics left on the beaches can also pose a threat to wildlife while land litter attracts rodents and other pests. Broken bottles and sharp objects are also a danger to others.

The DEH asked campers to be mindful of the health of the environment and to leave all areas used clean and free of litter.

Collected garbage should be properly secured and left in a visible area or at the curb side for collection by the DEH crew or placed in one of the large commercial containers placed throughout the districts. No waste should be left on the beaches, the campsites or disposed of in the sea or vegetation. Waste should not be thrown from moving cars or dumped on private property.

Encouraging people to continue recycling while camping, the DEH advised campers to mark bags or receptacles indicating the product inside. These can be taken to DEH recycling sites or the private skips at grocery stores and other islands-wide locations to keep as much Easter rubbish out of the landfill as possible.

Commercial garbage containers will be located at eight public places on Grand Cayman for campers, including Colliers Public Beach, East End; Kaibo Public Beach, North Side; Coe-Woods Public Beach, Bodden Town; Public Boat Ramp, South Sound; Smith Cove Public Beach, George Town; 7-Mile Public Beach, West Bay Road; Northwest Point Boat Ramp, West Bay and Barkers National Park, West Bay.

The garbage collection schedule for the weekend is as follows:

25 March – Good Friday: No scheduled garbage collections and all landfills will be closed to the public residents should make provisions to manage their waste until collected.

26 March – Saturday – regular schedule resumes

28 March – Easter Monday: Waste operations resume on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman

For more information, contact DEH Grand Cayman office at 949-8793 or Cayman Brac office at 948-2321.

Don’t worry, earth week soon come. All those expats wanting PR can do it .

Expat volunteers are showing concern that you , as a comfortably entitled local should use as an example of pride in your Island.

does anyone know who is in charge of the garbage along the median going over the bridge to West Bay… the people people cut the grass a week ago and left tons of garbage.they cut the grass around it…..if the lawn guys are not in charge of clean up….. who is? its so pathetic that so much trash is now lining the median and around the bridge….. so sad to see that…

Somebody check FOI and see how many fines were paid for littering in the last say 5 years.

Someone mentioned that there needs to be an educational littering campaign, while I agree that is a good idea, I find it quite depressing that on an Island this small and with such a high standard of living that we have the need for a littering campaign.

I mean, it’s a fairly simple concept….If you make a mess, clean it up!

It’s probably one of the first lessons you learned as a child. Clean up after yourself.

It all begins in the home.

Parents need to start being parents, and children need to stop having children.

The bag lady of South Sound is going to be very busy come Tuesday morning.

That’s my dear aunt..an educated, sweet, professional wife, mother & now retiree.
        Please respect her.
        She’s not a ‘bag lady’.

        • Anonymous says:

No insult intended . The lady is performing a civic duty and “bag lady ” is simply an affectionate description of the receptacle she carries to store the trash she collects.

The title should read; everyone else urged to clean up after Caymanians go to the beach.

I’m sure it’s a lot cleaner than any Street corner where some of you all comes from

the government misses all the proper opportunities to gain revenue ….. ticket people that liter…you cannot get away with that stuff in other countries…ticket people that speed and that park in handicap spaces…ticket people that treat animals poorly. Enforce a better environment and society….the lack of that at home and in society is why our island is getting worse……DO SOMETHING!! listen if parents are not going to teach their children how to be good people and respect our island than the government should lay down the law… it has to start somewhere….thats why the RCIPS are such a joke…. there are no small laws being enforced….so what makes people think the they will police the other stuff….its money in the government pocket to enforce proper behavior….

    • Anonymous says:

      brillant comment…

    • Anonymous says:

This is a better way to collect revenue than the private apartment rentals. Besides the cruel treatment of animals need to stop. Littering is as simple as cleaning up after yourself and for goodness sake leave the handicap spaces alone. Nothing is that far a walk. It is the sole reason why some people are obsely overweight here. Taking a few steps to walk is good for your heart.

so sad that people can’t see the dangers and ugliness of littering. and then we have the Government thinking its a good thing to pay gangs of lazy people to clean up once or twice a year for pay. We cannot continue with this mentality otherwise things will get worse. The Government and Police need to enforce the anti-littering laws, which by the way do exist. When will the Government gets a hand on all the things that are bringing Cayman down? Littering is only one of the evils. Gov’t needs to stop with the pussy-footing and enforce any and all of the laws which have been made for the benefit of the country.

It is a disgusting “tradition” which seems quite third world.

You seem to be kind of a jerk

You seem to be in a substantial minority. Perhaps you sophisticated argumentation evidenced above might sway some views in time.

          You’ve proved him right.

Say what?? All I said was they sound like a jerk. Who is he/she to say their tradition is disgusting.
You know what I think is disgusting and third world? ALL traditions. My god, New Year’s Day is the celebration of some guy getting the end of his pee wee shaved off. The catholic mass is basically a celebration of canabalism. Your birthday is the 9 months celebration of yo momma getting laid.

          • Anonymous says:

Bull fighting. Disgusting. Female genital mutilation. Disgusting. The premise upon which your argument was based, ripped up in 7 words. Bye bye.

            • Anonymous says:

Do you even know what you’re talking about? You just confirmed my premise for which I thank you. Now we can lay this to rest. Tradition is in the eye of the beholder. Tell your momma I said happy birthday.

5:55, I think that you need to get a life and stop eating fast food on your couch in front of the TV watching lifetime crying. Camping is and has been a beautiful tradition in Cayman. I have been going for many years now with my closest family and friends. It’s an opportunity for everyone to get together and cook, swim, fish, tell stories and be able to connect with loved ones. Maybe you should try it!

They learn by example. They look at the monument of trash that is Mt. Trashmore, so they figure, if their leaders don’t care, why should they!?

  11. Anonymous says:

What makes you think that any of the campers that would not bother cleaning up after themselves are reading CNS online???
    Hahahahaha

  12. A Visitor says:

Sadly, the Cayman Islands ranks as one of the most-littered islands I have visited. The people just don’t seem to care. They seem to have a “Let someone else clean it up” attitude. There needs to be more guidance at home and in school for the children. It’s a dirty bird that fouls its own nest…..

    • Anonymous says:

Oh my dear…..you would be surprised as to whom the litter bugs are. My neighbors are from another Caribbean country, where garbage is everywhere. Their yard looks like a auto shop/dump site.

      • Anonymous says:

It’s the influence of that “other ” Caribbean island that is ruining Cayman. Thanks to Mac.

    • Anonymous says:

I don’t think you have been many places.

    • Anonymous says:

You’re absolutely correct. Cayman is by far the dirtiest place I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to Juarez, Mexico. Clean it up.

    • Anonymous says:

To A Visitor @ 24/03/2016 at 2:01 pm – How can you compare just ‘islands’? Anyway, have you been to Jamaica, Haiti, Aruba, etc. There are many other islands that I have been to that are just as nonchalant, if not more so, about littering their land. Your comment is not valid if this is the only island you are using to compare. Try renting a car and driving around the islands that you visit and you will realize that your not speaking the truth.

  13. Anonymous says:

There needs to be a serious education campaign on littering here and more rigorous enforcement of laws…it is disgusting and I regret to say most people I see littering are not the expats…

    • D says:

It’s another Jamaican import to “throw it in the bush”.

    • Anonymous says:

Well most of the people I see littering are expats, but in your prejudiced mind people are only expats if they come from North Ameriaca, Europe and Australasia – and I accept expats from those places almost never litter.

  14. Anonymous says:

Not to worry. The Chamber of Commerce annual beach clean-up will be here soon to pick up after the “campers” have left

  15. Anonymous says:

Why would they wait until Easter Weekend to stop littering. They make this island a pig sty the other 361 days of the year.

  16. Anonymous says:

    good luck with that…..
easter…the only time of year i stay away from the beach…..

  17. Anonymous says:

Shame on DEH for spoiling the fun. Leaving garbage all over the beach at Easter is part of the local tradition.

  18. Dos XX says:

Can RCIPS or DEH give a single example of the litter laws ever being enforced?

    Stay trashy Cayman…….
