Two Cuban escapees recaptured

Cayman News Service(CNS): Two Cuban men who disappeared after a group of migrants landed at Beach Bay last month have been recaptured, officials have confirmed. The men are now back in the custody of the immigration department after they were apprehended Tuesday (16 February) around 3:00pm in the vicinity of Lantern Point on the outskirts of George Town.

They had been on the run for more than two weeks after they went missing when the vessel they were in came to the Beach Bay area of Grand Cayman from Cayman Brac. The men reportedly came ashore with two others, who were apprehended shortly after landing.

The authorities are currently holding 135 migrants, most of whom arrived in a variety of makeshift vessels since the start of the year, as a surge of Cuban nationals appear to be attempting the treacherous journey to the United States as fears grow in the neighbouring island that the current policy that allows Cubans who reach American soil to stay could be overturned.

The cost to the local public purse to detain migrants as they await deportation back to Cuba is growing, as are the security challenges as the Fairbanks Immigration Centre is now full and some migrants are being held in civic centres around Grand Cayman.

Is anyone explaining to these poor people their rights to claim asylum as some of them may well have such rights?

7.27am. Cut it out. Half of the world is poor including people in the USA. Don’t carry all world’s problems on your shoulders.

So you are promoting denying these people the protections they are entitled to by reference to the UK’s commitments under international law?

They are not as naive as you think they are. They know what they want and entitled to.

If what you say is true, which it is not, then there would be no harm in someone offering to explain their rights to them.

We are supposed to take them in, when we should be providing for our own first. Nothing wrong with helping them, but charity begins at home. Start here.

Can anyone say who is guarding the Cubans at Fairbanks now?

That would be doing the right thing but it might cost money. And Jesus said it was important to put money before doing the right thing. The Constitution says Cayman has to do what Jesus said.

Who the hell is going to upkeep them. Caymanians can’t survive here for the influx of work permit holders and you talking about entertaining refugees. Someone needs to go to an head shrinker.
