RCIPS Joint Marine Unit vessel, the Niven D

(CNS): A 59-year-old man from West Bay has been arrested and police are looking for at least two other men who fled after police intercepted a suspected drug boat on Tuesday night. The vessel, which appeared to be engaged in smuggling activities, was spotted two miles off the north coast at about 9pm on 23 February by the crew on the RCIPS helicopter on routine border patrol, who alerted officers on the police marine vessel Niven D. As the police boat approached, the suspicious vessel immediately accelerated toward the shore but the Niven D and the police helicopter gave chase.

There were at least three men on board, who beached the suspected drug boat in North Side and decamped into the bush. The boat and drugs on board were recovered by the RCIPS officers, who then searched for the men who were on the drug boat. They managed to catch and arrest one and the police are still looking for the others.

Anyone with information regarding this incident and the whereabouts of the other people from the vessel is urged to call the George Town Police Station at 949-4222 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS).
