(CNS): Rough seas in the George Town harbour prevented two cruise ships and a Royal Naval vessel from calling on Grand Cayman Thursday. The Carnival Dream and Brilliance of the Seas were both diverted to Spotts but Liberty of the Seas and Norwegian Getaway, as well as the HMS Mersey missed their calls. The navy ship was unable to dock in the harbour and officials said the ship would return later in February when the weather has improved. Cayman is expected to face continued unsettled and cool weather until the weekend.

Forecasters predict cloudy skies with a 30% chance of showers and temperatures not expected to rise out of the 70’s °F today and tomorrow. A small craft warning remains in effect as a result of rough seas and wave heights of up to 7 feet, with higher swells especially along the north and west coast and with winds coming from the north and northeast.

Too rough for the British navy. Priceless.

I think this would show how stupid the Cayman Islands Government is in the development of the Islands. The cruise ship landing is in the same places as the cargo dock , so only one thing at a time can happen. Why didn’t they plan a little more in the future . Put the cruise ship landing in spots, then it would take the congestion out of town, the taxi / bus drivers make more money, the gas stations make more money, the government make more money , the economy would be that much stronger, then there would be development to a other part of the island. If they were working for the Islands and the people.

Just another example of why we need the dock and need it now.
Most of those days the ships could have docked with the new design.

Have you ever looked at the size of the big cruise ships? The windage on a vessel 1000 feet long and ten storeys high would make it VERY difficult to dock and doubt if any Master would risk the potential damage the ship might suffer, surging against the pier(s), even if he could get alongside. The proposed docks would only be effective if there was a huge and lengthy breakwater to the North of the piers to prevent swell. And such a structure would probably cause all sorts of problems with changes in the currents – ultimately affecting West Bay Beach. This would be a $300 million traffic accident waiting to happen.

And how many docked out of the seven on Wednesday’ I believe it was three. Is it not time that Kirkconnell admits that the cargo dock needs to be moved, it only works at 50% capacity as it is. Whoever has heard of a cargo port that can only work at night and when it gets a little breezy shuts down ( hence fish finger shortage) if it moved it would revitalise an area of Cayman and also bring jobs to that area.
Secondly the cruise piers that needs a more sheltered area again a little breeze and they can’t dock, or is Kirkconnell more concerned about selling a few family Rolex’s well they won’t sell with no ships.
