(CNS): The runway at Owen Roberts International Airport was temporarily closed on Friday afternoon after an aircraft broke down and spilled hydraulic fluid on the tarmac. Officials from the Airports Authority have not disclosed the details of the flight or which airline was involved but said the incident happened around noon. The entire runaway was closed until the aircraft was removed. The runway was partially reopened while clean-up crews dealt with the spill and was back in full operation just before 4pm, the authority stated.

Yep this is the state of affairs we are in A government ran by cronyism nepotism and inept leadership. God forbid we report or say the truth about what’s happening. What does one expect from the CIAA management in place?

Cowardly cover up. As shocking as it is indefensible. Someone should be fired for the event and the cover up. But what am I saying. There is no word for “accountability” in the Caymanian dictionary. Another day in Absurdistan.

Based on the arrival/departure records and assuming this was a scheduled flight, it does rather look like this is down to CAL or CAL Express. Dumping a load of hydraulic fluid on a runway isn’t exactly a minor incident and I agree with the other comments – we have a right to know which airline was involved.

Why the secrecy – this would not happen anywhere else. To have the runway closed from noon to 4.00pm must have caused havoc with both inbound and outbound flights. This incident is not even mentioned in the Compass. The public have a right to know exactly what happened as by any standards this was a major incident.

the runway remained open and operational. Not that big of a deal and can happen to any aircraft, new or old.

Where did you get that from?

This is the official version of events –
        ————————————————————————————————————-
The Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) can confirm that an aircraft broke down on the runway at noon today (Friday, 8 January) after landing, which caused the runway at the Owen Roberts International Airport (ORIA) to be temporarily closed while the aircraft was removed.

Upon special inspection of the runway a spill of hydraulic fluid was found. The Airports Authority then reopened the runway, excluding the pavement containing the spill while they worked to clear the spill.

At 1:25pm both outgoing and incoming flights resumed operations.

That reads to me like the runway was closed for 85 minutes.

Midday gives three options – CAL Express Twin Otter from the Brac, CAL B737 from MIA or an IBC freighter. Based on previous incidents my bets would be on the latter.

And trust me loss of hydraulic fluid from any system on an airplane is a big deal, particularly if it happens during landing.

Or on Take Off, or In Flight, Or while Taxiing, Or while zzzzzzzzzzz

The fact that “officials” didn’t disclose which airline it was tells us exactly which airline this happened to. Typical Cayman cover up approach. Get new planes!
