Miss Cayman Islands in costume

(CNS): Tonie Chisholm has made the finals of the National Costume round at the Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas. Miss Cayman Islands and the 80 women she is competing with at the pageant have been going through the preliminary rounds and rehearsals this week ahead of the main event, which will be televised live on Sunday. Wearing a bright red fire-coral costume, Chisholm’s outfit heated things up for her in the beauty contest.

This year the Miss Universe pageant is being televised the night after its rival contest, Miss World. And while that pageant has dumped its bikini rounds, the Miss Universe contest is sticking with the tradition.

The national costume round is a far cry from the traditional dress worn by pageant contestants in days gone by. The round now is all about feathers and sequins and outlandish show costumes inspired by, in same cases, some rather odd national connections.

However, the Miss Cayman Islands outfit, designed by Rocky Gathercole, ticked all the boxes to get the Northsider into the spotlight ahead of the competition final on Sunday, when the winners of the various rounds will be announced and the winner of the whole contest will be crowned by last year’s winner Miss Colombia, Paulina Vega.

It’s strange that she was disciplined for dressing inappropriately, yet they make her wear this.

A pirate costume highlighting and promoting our national festival would not be a bad idea.

Well, Cayman did receive one particular accolade on the night; oldest contestant (27) in the competition!

    Hmmm…??

She looked beautiful though. The ending will go down in history as perhaps the most memorable though – poor ol’ Steve Harvey. (I think Ms. Colombia had him mesmerised, lol!)

    😉

All those 19 year olds looking like they were 25 year olds was quite worrying. One step from jail bait.

Thanks to Facebook I just managed to watch the clip of the mistaken announcement – and that was some funny stuff!!
Not because of the girls’ reaction, I feel horribly for Miss Colombia, but Steve Harvey’s slow, comical return to the stage.

Those of us that have followed him from his early days of stand-up comedy will understand what I mean. Looked like when he used to talk about “Sister Odell” singing in church, lol!

This one will surely go down in history. Also, Miss Colombia holds the record of the shortest reign as Miss Universe ever.

Steve, I advise you not vacation in her country any time soon … or ever!

      😉

The double standards of cayman. Tourists not allowed in bikini in town, but local teens are judged wearing them on national tv.

    • Anonymous says:

Yeah. Sort of like how some countries don’t allow drinking under the age of 18, but babies, toddlers and teens are allowed in pubs. Thereafter said countries spend billions trying to cure their national alcohol epidemic.

    • Anonymous says:

I wish someone would tell the tourists that (shudders).

    • Crock O'Shite says:

Well, have you seen the tourists that walk around almost in the buff? Jeez, no one wants to see THAT half naked. Cover up, man, for the love of god. However, if half the tourists looked like Miss Cayman in a bathing suit, it wouldn’t be half bad ?

    • Anonymous says:

      She’s not a teen. She’s quite old. She’s 27.

I missed the show! Who won??

    Let’s Go Cayman!

Keep up the good work Tonie. You’re making our tiny Island Nation proud. I ask you not to allow the cowards that use the anonymous posts on this site to throw you off you game plan.Their personal vendettas are quite clear yet very sad. Continue to make them post negativity here because it only proves one thing… You’re getting to them… So you must be doing something right. Thank you for representing my country so well on the World stage.

The pagent has dumped it’s bikini round? You all got to be flipping kidding me…. That was my favorite part, no more watching miss universe for me, I have now lost all interest.

This looks ridiculous. She might as well have dressed up as a pirate. The babe is gorgeous, but the suit sucks. Please fire the wardrobe advisor.

Mmmm. Sexy pirate. Duff beer. Mmmmm.

I suspect this post was intended to equate the sort of poster that writes “phwoar” with Homer Simpson, which would be apt. Sadly that sort of poster would be incapable of working that out and would not in agreement while pressing a supportive icon.

You look great Toni! No matter what, you have represented us well, as a modern intelligent a beautiful person, inside and out.

O.M.G. the national costume looks awful – like a red octopus of some sort. (Haven’t seen any of them lately)

I would prefer if it was a Southern Atlantic Stingray. (Like those at the sandbar)

Quite an embarrassment for the Cayman Islands. I thought I had misheard Tonie’s introduction but after viewing her introduction three times, I realized it was exactly what I heard. “Tonie Chisholm, 27, Cayman Island.” It was either nerves, ignorance or pure insult on her behalf. Unlike the Tortuga’s Rum Cake Package which also states Cayman Island, she should know better. There areTHREE islands – Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman that make up the Cayman Islands. Shame on you Tonie!!!

    • Anonymous says:

Oh that she were telling the truth and that the Lessers had been sold to the Chinese. No more drain on public funds or the worst sort of local politicians.

    • Sean says:

      You’re a moron. Listen again

    • Anonymous says:

I thought it was Grand Cayman & and the Lesser Caymans

      • Anonymous says:

It is. That is the most accurate description in terms of geography and history. “Sister Islands” is a pathetic affectation of modern politicians sucking up to the Brackers because of their over-representation in the LA. It is part of the malaise that leads to so much public money being wasted on the Lesser Caymans too and has given rise to the mentality of “well if Grand Cayman has one, why can’t the Brac have one”.

    • Anonymous says:

Please review it again because you did hear wrong…. she did say Cayman Islands…I reviewed it several times after reading your comment and you are wrong.

Tonie you did us proud…and you looked so beautiful!

  13. Anonymous says:

Darn…its just a costume! Lighten up.

  14. Anonymous says:

    C’mon baby , light my fire coral….

  15. Anonymous says:

Poor Tonie! What an utterly tasteless outfit (for lack of a better term!)

  16. Anonymous says:

Lol @ 1:32:54 in the video!

As Tonie hit the stage you can hear what is clearly a good ol’ Caymanian scream from somewhere deep in the audience 😀

Miss Cayman Islands looked amazing on the night. Good luck to her!

Looks like cpie rolled in red mole

Exploiting a young woman’s body for the glory of a “win”. That’s like parking in a handicap spot at Fosters for the “Win”.

  19. Anonymous says:

It’s funny that fire coral is white and not red…

  20. Anonymous says:

    I likes girls.

  21. Anonymous says:

I got to get me one of those!!!

  22. Just Curious says:

Is it a Lion Fish costume?

    • Captain Obvious says:

No. It’s fire coral…hence the name, “Fire Coral”.

      • Anonymous says:

They why, Captain Obvious, is it coloured red? Fire coral is in fact a white tone, I would have thought that was the obvious mistake dimwit.

        • The Return of Captain Obvious! says:

I was correcting the person because they asked if it was a lion fish when the costume is clearly called, “Fire Coral”. Fire coral is actually a very distinct yellowish/caramel colour, with white TIPS, not pure white, you complete and utter nitwit! Please, don’t speak about things you don’t know about, it’s embarrassing for everyone. In any event, the correction had nothing to do with facts on fire coral’s characteristics but rather on what the costume had been deemed.

  23. Anonymous says:

Which is ironic given that the Cayman Islands Government would rather a Minister’s close family sell more expensive watches than protect the coral.

The bots are getting half-hearted. One of them managed to put in 18 thumbs down in quick succession then gave up.

  24. Tooty Fruity says:

The shameful exploitation of our women and in your face hypocrisy continues.

    • Anonymous says:

I do enjoy a little female exploitation, especially at weekends.

    • Seriously? says:

She isn’t being exploited. She made a conscious decision to be a part of this pageant. No one forced her into anything. We are on the cusp of 2016, she’s a free-spirited woman and can do whatever she wants in my opinion as another free-spirited woman. It’s the self-oppressed women I feel sorry for. To each their own, whether you want to be conservative or liberal or whatever it’s your decision, as long as you aren’t harming anyone. Don’t look down your nose at someone just because they don’t adhere to your life style.
