Christmas clean-up programme under the UDP government

(CNS): Government has found the necessary funding to provide three weeks work for unemployed locals to undertake the Christmas clean-up operation. People employed under the National Community Enhancement Project 2015 will be doing repairs and maintenance, gardening, cleaning parks, beaches and roadside verges to spruce up the islands ahead of the holiday season. Recruitment for the project begins across Grand Cayman tomorrow.

Community Affairs Minister Osbourne Bodden announced plans for the project in the Legislative Assembly in October. He told CNS recently that he needed to find more than $1 million in order to fund the project. He also said that this government would manage the project tightly and ensure that the system was not abused, as he criticised the management of the operation in previous years under UDP administration. This is the first time the Progressive government has organised the paid seasonal work programme.

Workers have also been warned that any non-performance under the contract will result in immediate termination. Water, safety equipment and tools will be provided, but not transport or food, and working conditions were described as dusty, hot and dirty.

I can see it now Many that are currently employed by the CS and in the private sector will be taking off work to suck a little more by hanging out with their friends smoking and joking all day expecting to get paid from their normal bosses as well as the free clean up money

The recipients should appear on a public list. To shame them into not coming back for more welfare next year.

Some of you people are out of your minds do you realize we have people out here suffering who really want to work but can’t get a chance keep the bs to yourself bout public list why don’t you state your name publicly

    One word “joke”.

So if I see them sitting on my wall smoking like the last time, I should contact Osbourne and say his great plan isn’t working? I certainly would not speak to them. The last lot were a bunch of guys you would not argue with.

Well, it’s good to know that the money these guys earn will go to buy Xmas presents for their wives and children……….

Gee I wonder if the contract to manage this will go to a certain MLA owned recycle company. Guess we will just have to wait and see.

The money would be far better spent and receive the same results in this way.

1/ Divide the $500,000 hand out equally amongst the unemployed that show up the first day and thank them for coming.

2/Take the remaining $500,000, buy a truck, some tools and hire a supervisor and have a team of 8-10 people working on cleanup for the entire year.

Honestly, I would have rather had that Government spends that amount of money on something long term, such as:

    1. Raising awareness in regards to littering and the respective penalties
    2. Prosecuting offenders in regards to littering/dumping
    3. Implement and ensure adherence to a minimum upkeep of property standards
    4. Mandatory recycling for public offices/places, hotels, restaurants, bars etc.
    5. Implementation of vehicle exhaust level checks and banning of offending vehicles (the vehicle checks at automobile dealers doesn’t work!!!!!)

Getting the Island cleaned up is nice but it won’t last but a week! Government needs to enforce laws and remind the residents of their civic duties rather than making them believe that Government is to do it all.

This million dollars will be squandered for a short term benefit. Why can’t Government ever look at something long term and big picture!?!?

The money could have been used to complete the heritage bell end tower park or whatever it was meant to be.

I would much rather them do a little labor for their money than breaking into houses. How can you complain with all the unemployed on island? The idea is a great one it just needs to be managed properly. I am speaking from experience as I was unemployed for 2 years and was able to gain money in exchange for labor. I am qualified banker, just for the record. I was able to speak to some of these individuals you call crack heads, drunks and criminals. When you sit down and converse with them at their level, you start to realize that they are not bad people. Majority just cannot get work. When you see how hard some of them work for that little money then you would say they deserve it. Its not an easy job picking up garbage and chopping bush in the hot sun. A lot of people would not do that job even if they were unemployed.

They could get work if they were not crack heads, drunks or criminals. That is the point. There are hundreds of available jobs.

So basically, the tax payer is paying these people not to rob our homes?

Two of these “unemployed” regularly come to our complex asking for money claiming to be unable to find work. I offered both of them $25 in exchange for washing my (small) car or cleaning my (very small) condo backyard. Neither were interested, and one laughed at the suggestion. However, we did catch one breaking into the cars to steal from them, and he attributed his crime to his drug problem when the police came. So I’m speaking from experience when I tell you that 1 of 2 I met was indeed a crackhead/criminal and 2 of 2 didn’t take work when offered. While they might have been holding out for management positions, I’m more inclined to believe they just don’t want to work.

Let me hear this right..$1M to clean the island up for Christmas??? What about all year round? Is it really costing $1M to pay these people to clean the Island? $1M could pay a few people all year round to keep the Island clean. I use to see DOE people on the side of the road picking up garbage, aren’t the getting a salary from the CIG for this? Why are we asking for $1M? when people are going hungry and losing their homes….????

Really…..1 million dollars for three weeks.

After leadership and management get their cut there is usually not much left to pay the workers. Lucky if they get a third of that.
