(CNS): Three George Town men began serving twelve year sentences Wednesday after acting Justice Francis Belle delivered the jail terms in  his ruling on the Blackbeard’s robbery case via a Skype call from St Lucia. A fourth man who had pleaded guilty to the offence before his co-accused went on trial received a nine year sentence. Andrew Santangelo Lopez, Bron Ohara Webb and Randy Connor were given the twelve year terms for the possession of an unlicensed handgun and a gold spray-painted shot gun used in the a liquor store hold-up in December 2014.

They also received two ten year terms for the robberies perpetrated on the customers in Blackbeard’s at the time as well as the hold-up of the liquor store. Those terms were ordered to run concurrently with the time given for the possession of the guns.

Devon Emmanuel Wright Jr, who had admitted his part in the same heist, received a slightly shorter prison sentence for his guilty pleas, receiving 9 years for the possession of the weapons and two seven-year terms for the robberies. The judge said that the time the men have already spent in jail will be taken into consideration but it will be some time before any of the robberies will be eligible for release.

The four hapless robbers, all in their twenties, used Lopez’ mother’s car for the evening robbery at the Grand Harbour shop and returned with the loot in the immediate wake of the hold-up to his own home, where the four were caught virtually red-handed some twenty minutes after the robbery took place by police. Wright was recognized by one of the members of staff at the store, which led to his early guilty plea.

The other three, however, had tried to deny the allegations and each claimed to know nothing about the heist but the jury were not convinced and convicted all three men.

Seems very lenient. Given the guns were used in a robbery, 15-20 years would seem more appropriate as the starting point.

Wait a minute. The 10 year terms will run alongside the 12 year terms? The sentences will not be stacked?? Why even bother charging them for holding up the liquor store them?
