Marco, the missing police dog

(CNS) UPDATED Saturday 3:30pm: The RCIPS have now found Marco, a seven-year-old male Belgian Malinois that went missing from his West Bay pen Thursday. The dog was found safe and well, a police spokesperson said on Saturday. The dog has been in Cayman working successfully with the K-9 Unit for five years and escaped from his enclosure on Anise Lane in the Birch Tree Hill area of West Bay about 10am on Thursday.

The RCIPS K-9 officers believe Marco escaped because of the heavy thunderstorms in the area Thursday afternoon. The police extended their thanks to the public for their assistance in tracking down Marco.

My guess is that the scent of weed, around the West Bay police station got too high and the poor dog is just doing what he is trained to do, find the source.
Only problem is that there are so many sources in WB that it is taking him some time to get back home.

I think you should try get your facts straight before putting up these kind of comments.

First of all there are drugs on every part of this island. I’m sure there’s some in your neighborhood. WB seems to get called up allot on this instants doesn’t mean that’s o the only district on island that has problems with drugs

Second try have some respect for the Police, they’re not all bad.

Soooooo…… where did the find the pup? Another big secret? Embarrassing? Well??

  3. Anonymous says:

God knows we may have better policing if all the humans in RCIPS, including Baines, were replaced by K9s! I know many dogs with better manners and intellect than some RCIPS Officers!

  4. Fred the Piemaker says:

He handed himself in after a plea from the RCIPS

Why is this dog kept penned up outside? As a previous poster said the dog should be by his master’s side. That dog is his partner, not something to be discarded and ignored until needed again.

There is little to no respect for animals and their welfare on these islands. This attitude does not reflect well on the people of these Islands.

You will find that police K9’s all over the world live in kennels outside. They are not family pets until the y retire for obvious reasons

Losing a K9 dog is bad. Aren’t they recognised as police officers as well? Hope the RCIP takes care of they’re guns more than they do they’re pets.

  7. Anonymous says:

anyone here think we should put the dog in charge?????

  8. Anonymous says:

Who wants to be in a cage. The dog should be at his masters side not in a cage and at the foot of his bed at night. Its mans best friend not some slave to be kept penned up in the sun and rain. Its obvious to the dog its not loved

    • Sharkey says:

9:35 pm you right , and the dog is also not care for the proper way, that’s why it ran away. I think that the officer needs to trained in the handling and care of such a dog as a k-9 dog .

  9. Anonymous says:

The police here are a disgrace and these dogs deserve better!

Police Career? Can anyone tell me when these dogs are being used? I haven’t seen any since their arrival 6 years ago. They seem to be ready for retirement already!!!

  11. Anonymous says:

Poor dog. Is this dog trained for drugs? What is his training in- search and rescue? If this dog is afraid of thunder would he not also be afraid of hearing a gunshot? Whatever the case- hope he is found safe.

  12. Anonymous says:

This is West Bay. That dog will already be tied up in a crack family back yard for fighting, poisoned, hit by a car or on a boat to Honduras.

But how typical of RCIPS to neglect and lose an expensive asset.

  13. Knot S Smart says:

    Poor Marco…
Hope he did not get addicted from sniffing all of those drugs – and now has runaway because he needs a hit badly and all of the drugs were stolen from the Po Po…

  14. Anonymous says:

Poor rufus, everyone in west bay should buy some beggin bits n we can probably find him, and there should be a reward also or else no one probably wont care

  15. Anonymous says:

Idiots. I hope the dog is okay.

  16. Anonymous says:

Marco is a major government asset – 1/6 of the Cayman Islands K-9 unit. I don’t understand how such a valuable animal could be cavalierly penned up and neglected right next to the gangland of Birch Tree Hill. You can’t make this stuff up.

  17. Anonymous says:

LOL, even the dogs are deserting the sinking ship!

  18. Anonymous says:

“officers believe Marco escaped because of the heavy thunderstorms”. Really? Clearly he escaped because his enclosure was not secure. I hope Marco was not injured in his escape. It was probably caused by a panicked dog desperately trying to escape because of storm anxiety. If they have had the animal for five years, one would think that the caregivers would be aware of this. Storm anxiety is clearly evident in certain dogs, and if they did notice it and did nothing to ameliorate the stress it’s completely irresponsible. They could use a “thunder vest” produced under the same principals as developed by the animal behaviourist Temple Grandin, or any one of a number of other techniques to comfort an anxious canine.

    • Anonymous says:

I find it so ironic that you mention Temple Grandin, a lady with Aspergers. You see if her parents listened to the experts in her day that would have had her put in an institution then you wouldn’t have an animal behaviourist that developed a “thunder vest”. You see, a lot of people with Aspergers or on the Spectrum have issues with loud noises so that lady knows exactly how that poor dog feels. Just want to mention this because a lot of people on this site have said that special needs children shouldn’t be integrated.

  19. gray matter says:

May behe in better care, a love and cared fir animal would not run away, this is a trained dog , I think asca trained k9 doggie he knows his way home, but for what. His instincts tell the truth.

  20. Sgt. Preston says:

Please go home, Marco. You’re making our cops look bad!

  21. Selena says:

Second time? Remember policed dog escaped and killed by a car?

  22. philip says:

Cant wait to see the comments on this one!!

  23. Anonymous says:

Lightening, thunder and rain frightened the dog who jumped over a 8 -10 foot fence or was the gate to the enclose not properly secured and come open by strong winds ?

Let’s hope he is found as these dogs cost about $10 – 15 thousand a piece.

  24. Root says:

The cops are useless. Better call John and Harold for help…….

    • frangipani says:

the height of carelessness on the part of the cops in whose care this dog was left…..police are hopeless in every way shape and form. Any wonder our country is in the mess that we are.

  25. Anonymous says:

    How…why….?

  26. Jamaica Jamma says:

So this expensive police dog was not “chipped” so the he could be tracked?
What is this? More old English inefficiency and not thinking ahead?
De dagg in Jamaica by now man. Gone on de stolen boat outta de govna habba.
Get de nu wan chip nexx time man. You no say police dagg gine bring a money fe we.

    • Anonymous says:

“chipped” does not equal “gps”. You have to find the dog first in order to read the chip.
